What sites do Bass players recommend?

I can't find a bass equivalent of this site which is a real shame. Is there anything anywhere near as well organised and deep (and free!) you guys can recommend?

I noticed Justin seems to have 3 or 4 bass related lessons on this site but focused on guitar.

So is there anything out there? I'm a guitarist who has a bass and is unsure how to really get started.

I'm also looking for bass lessons similar in style to Justin's guitar lessons.  I finished Justin's beginner level and rewarded myself with a Fender bass, so now I need to get going on bass lessons as I start the intermediate level for guitar.

So talkbass.com seems to be a big online community.

For lessons I can find no free comparable place to this site which maybe isn't so surprising, But I'd recommend checking out ScottsBassLessons. There'sa  bunch of free lessons on Youtube and the main site  to give you a flavour, but all the structured courses require paid membership (there's a free trial).

If you don't object to paying for stuff, I think it's a great resource.

Talking Bass as advised is also good.

I dabbled for a couple of months with a Bass before deciding to concentrate on a 6 string for a couple of years and hence I have tried both but did not subscribe to the pay version of TB

I now have a Fender Jazz Bass and hence have started to dabble again.

I played the bass for about a year before I picked up the guitar. There’s a wealth of good stuff out there! Here are some of my favorites:

TalkBass.com - Internet forums for bass players. Check out the General Instruction section.
Studybass.com - great series of lessons that focuses on how to use chord tones when playing the bass.
Talkingbass.net - Mark Smith does a fantastic job of teaching bass. I especially enjoyed his music theory for the bass, ear training, and riff playing courses.
Scott’s Bass Lessons - hard to deny Scott’s enthusiasm and inspired playing.

If you don’t mind spending a few bucks/pounds/euros, get a copy of the Hal Leonard Bass Method by Ed Friedland. It starts with notes on the E string, and covers various techniques, including slap bass. There’s exercises with audio to get the skills under your fingers.

Hello!

As someone who's been playing bass since 1997, I can tell you all of the resources linked above are valuable and can help you learn a lot, although only Justin teaches like Justin.

However, be aware that huge communities (such as the Talkbass.com forum) may be a bit confusing for a complete beginner.
And with so many different sources, it may be best to just pick one and stick with that only for a while.

Also, there are hundreds of different styles and techniques: don't feel compelled to learn all of them unless you want to be a 360 degrees versatile bass player.
Start with the basics and once you got that, choose a path you like.

There's a ton of free knowledge on youtube.  That's how I learned most things.  Once you have enough basic knowledge (timing, rhythm, and groove) just start searching for covers of songs you like, and learn by playing along.  Rewind, slow-mo (yup, youtube will even let you slow the vids down).  In the old days the best way to learn was to play along with the records.  Now it's play along with youtube.  Either way, the key phrase is play along!
