Guide: Extract MP4s from ISOs
« on: November 05, 2016, 02:00:08 pm »
Hello! Originally I was looking to purchase the beginners course dvds content as digital files to place on my plex server, but I noticed there was no such thing (or I am blind.) I had to either buy the dvd or the iso, it wasn't even available in m4v. So I decided to buy the isos and write a script. I figured I'd share it with others. ^^

Link: https://github.com/thinkslynk/JustinGuitar-Scripts/

NOTE: It currently only supports the Beginners Course dvds, and Strumming Techniques 1 but it's easily modifiable to be used with Justin's other products. If you edit the script, feel free to PR your changes back, or send me a PM with the chapter titles.

extractFromISO.py

A script to export your iso as mp4s. You can purchase justinguitar isos here:

http://www.justinguitar.com/en/PR-667-ISO-files.php

Setup
First ensure that you have handbrake and handbrake cli installed:

Handbrake -- https://handbrake.fr/

Handbrake CLI -- https://handbrake.fr/downloads2.php

You can double check by opening your terminal / command prompt and typing:

Code: [Select]
handbrakecli --help
Which should present you with a wall of text.

Next ensure you have python installed (3.x should work, but I've only tested with 2.x):

Python --
Code: [Select]
https://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuide/Download
You can double check by opening your terminal / command prompt and typing:

Code: [Select]
python -h
Usage
Simply mount the iso and call the script as follows:

Code: [Select]
./extractFromISO.py /path/to/the/dvd/ /path/to/save/files/
Follow the on screen prompts for choosing the which product the iso is, which disc you're using, and what quality you want to export to. Note that transcoding files may take upwards of a few hours on slow computers. So if the script looks like it's frozen, just give it some time.

Nice work.  How big do the transcoded files end up if you transcode them at DVD quality?
I'm curious whether I could fit the contents of all the DVDs onto a single 128GB USB stick.

The first DVD of the beginner's course is 4gb for the ISO, and 1.7gb transcoded with the HQ settings, which is probably overkill. You could probably get it under a gb per disc with a lower quality transcode.

So at worst 2 gb per disc, and currently 20 course discs available. That would be 40gb transcoded (plus the DVD extras like Justin's ear training mp3s.)

Search for a freebie prog dvd2mpg, there are also dvd2mp4 versions

Depending upon the structure of the DVD you can also try to simply copy the vob files to a hard drive and rename the extension from iso to mpg.
