I just want to say that as a Funk bass player I try to avoid making up grooves in E, especially slap-and-poppped ones, because they are so common.

HELP.
Anyone got any tips for me to be able to get this chord. It's driving me around the twist, probably the hardest chord I have tried so far. I just cannot get my middle finger to allow the D string to ring out clearly. I can get it to play but then the barre on the first three strings don't ring out properly. Guitar almost went out the window tonight. Please help before the men in white coats come to get me.

Start with the mini-barre with the 3rd ringer.

Then lay your 2nd finger on top of your third finger as much as possible.  That will tend to force your second finger to bridge over the D string.

Then fret the D string with your index finger.

When I've needed to play this chord (on acoustic) I've used my pinkie for the barre, needs strength but leaves your hand more open to help prevent muting the D string, also be careful where your thumb is.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies.
Darrell, I tried using the little finger as the barre which worked but then you can't play the E13 which you really need to do the funk stuff. I've also tried your method Shadow, which is the method Justin shows, it just doesn't seem to work for me. Maybe it's just a case of practice, practice practice. Lets face it when I started I couldn't fret the A chord. Like with most things it's a case of persistance. Its just that the chord looks so simple to do and I'm getting a bit, well, a lot frustrated.
Anyway thanks to both of you for your help.
