Yess congrats Toby! So happy it all worked out in the end. You know after that Schecter thread you started I've been really GASing after a Nick Johnston SSS (huge fan of his) but I realised I have most of the parts on hand to put together a pretty badass Strat partscaster so I'll be doing that instead.

My birthday is coming up though and a particular LP caught my eye so looks like I'll be joining the club soon.

What a delight when what initially is a "your world fell out your bottom" (dear me) moment becomes a win in more ways than one.

Now I have to ask ... what do you notice when playing both your LPs. I assume they have the same spec, other than finish. I'd currently not even go to my own good lady who is ever so supportive to acquire a second electric (local store as G&L tele-style guitars) let along another LP-style.

Look forward to catching up with you at the upcoming face-face events and enjoying all else that flows from the Madman's Dojo.

That is one hell of a repair. From what i can see on the pictures; if you didn't knew it happened, you couldn't say it did.

That luthier sure knows his job. It's good to see her joining the family again.

Now to keep her safe from falling again..... ;D

double win bro!

Yes, in many cases, snapped LP headstocks can be repaired, even though it looks like like a fatal accident.

happy to hear this story has a double-happy-ending ^^

Quick thank you for all the responses and yep it truly is an awesome repair but the big difference, after Steve set it up, was its playability. Late Wednesday evening I spent 80 minutes impro-ing over some good old rock backing tracks, as the best of my abilities allow. But it felt so effortless as the action is sooo good and silky smooth. I am convinced Steve has done a far superior job on the LP, when I compare it to the couple of set ups I had done on my old Affinity and the Washburns. I know they are all different but I suspect he will be able to elevate them to the same level. So one by one I'll be taking all my toys round to SRB with the guarantee they will have the best possible base setting.

When he restarts the maintenance workshop, I'll take the opportunity to learn how to do thing properly. I have enough knowledge to keep things ticking over but think it will be good to be taught by a pro. On top of that we discussed possible lessons, as he was teaching for 30 years in the UK but has been more focused on the building side over here. So something I'll follow up once the Covid situation improves, as I am at a point where 121 lesson should be a benefit............I hope and he's darned good.

Just a couple of answers to some questions raised.

Ivan - Its your birthday, go for it.  ;)

Stitch - huge thanks for actually pointing out a good luthier could repair the LP.  And Steve would seem to be more than good, given the outcome. And who would thought he'd be right on the doorstep !

Does it sound any different than before the break ? Not that I can tell plays a hell of a lot better.

Doses it sound any different to  Smokey given the only difference is the finish ? Well not to my ears but with any electric it all depends what's in the FX chain. But given I thought Cherry was consigned to the parts bin and Smokey was smokin I just had to have it.

Which also calls for a big thank you to my good lady who has always supported my passions. With her heart issues, its been a difficult 15 months for us both and agreeing to yet another LP for my 65th was I guess her thank you to me for the last year or so. And a day later when I told I had arranged to visit Steve to see what could be done, she told me I'd be stupid not to and to get it sorted. So I am indeed a lucky man.

Like I said, a dog with two tails !!

Cheers

Toby

Great to hear such a happy ending to the story Toby. Fantastic that you found a terrific guy locally.👍 The last local guy I spoke to prior to lockdown said amongst other things that it wasn’t a problem if you took too much off a saddle, you just needed to shim it up with a bit of cardboard!

Hey thanks Gordon and yes there are some scary so called techs out there.

I've also heard about folks using cardboard or paper as shims. I'll be taking the others back for a fettle bit by bit but will need to prioritising. Mim Strat has some selector issues at the moment, especially engaging the neck pup and I am convinced the shop in Rennes cut the "e" groove on the HB30's nut too low, as the string is just a gnats off the fret !! Probably the SG after that but we will see but if they all end up as good as Cheery I'll be well chuffed.

Cheers

As it was my 65th this year, my good lady had been constantly asking what I wanted, for what was once a milestone UK birthday (but my state pension now starts next year). So browsing on the Thomann website and loitering on the image of a complete Cherry in all her splendour, such was the disappointment  ;) when a few clicks later revealed a gorgeous Smokehouse Burst Studio LP and my heart melted. It did not take much persuading from my wife, for me to agree it would make a fine birthday present. So although the brown box arrived long before the big day, I waited patiently until the 30th of March before fully welcoming Smokey into my life.

Sorry to be late to the party. Now, I'm no fan of burst finishes, but that is truly gorgeous. Congratulations.  You've managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat!

Fun read, thanks for sharing your updates and gorgeous gear! Congrats on the new LP and the repaired LP. Looks like you've been practicing pretty consistently since 2016 - got any wisdom to share about sticking to a routine or not getting discouraged?

Hey thanks for reading and the kind comments. Now as to the question ........

Let me have a think about this, as its not an obvious answer as I have had many ups and down. I'll round up the positives and let you know !

LONG LONG TIME AGO…………………….

Been meaning to do this for quite a while now but it seems more significant, given how 2021 has started.

So, after 25 years of owning a guitar and many years of pathless wandering before finding JustinGuitar back in late 2012 and starting the BC in March the next year, I have now just completed my third “live” performance!!

The Open Mic initiatives, instigated by Rossco1/Jason have really given me the opportunity to look back and see how far I’ve come. Realistically, I need to discount all those years I was going round in circles, so I’ll measure this from March 2013 when I first started the “Classic” Beginners Course.

If you had asked me back then, if I would ever play to an audience, even an online one, I would have laughed in your face, heck six months ago? Same answer, no way Jose!!

But I have just completed the JGC Open Mic 2 (May 15 2021), which was proceeded by our very first JGC Open Mic Trial (April 23 2021) and just a week ago, the very first JustinGuitar Showcase trial, livestreamed to an in-house YouTube audience (7 May 2021) playing in front of the man himself. Cool!! And the timing is perfect.

Over the last few days, I have gone back over the recordings I have made, since being here and have finally compiled a catalogue of my efforts.

Boy there are some rough ones right at the start and I’m glad to say it gradually got better, well at least in my opinion. There is still a long way to go and I have so much more to learn but this year and the last couple of months, draws a huge line in the sand. I feel I can call myself a guitarist…………..kind of !!

So, this is where my recording “career” started back in September 2014 using Audacity and about three quarters of the way through the old “classic” Beginners Course. Things have changed a hell of a lot since then but here is that first little acorn.

Those early recordings come with a government health warning. I cringe when I go back to listen to the ones from 2014. But hey, we all had to start somewhere and look where it took me !!

If you play them all, apologise to any colleagues you are working with, if not wearing headphones !

Thanks for the comments.

Cheers

Good job on the catalogue,  Toby. I remember many of those posts.

I've slowly been clearing my SoundCloud account since switching to YT. Maybe I should consider putting all the audio files in a GDrive folder. Even the very first recording of a single verse of Hallelujah which I made my own LoL by playing in 4/4 rather than 6/8.

You’ve got a great collection there Toby. Of course the earlier ones are not what you might wish for now, but the whole point of the Road Case thing is to compare then and now and you must be really pleased with where you are now.

Great stuff last night btw!

Well done, Toby!

Especially love your White Rabbit cover. Since first hearing Jefferson Airplane's extended catalog in an appropriate state of mind, I've been a die-hard fan. Thanks for the inspiration.

@David - I have a folder on the PC where I keep all the project songs, so I can then deleted their folders from my main Reaper folder when done. There area few from early days I did not post but kept as reminders. I still have quite a bit of room on Soundcloud as I went for the paid option a couple of years ago and have included the audio of the videos I have done. But moving on it will fall under the MMS banner, so YT and SC. I will probably move it all to the cloud somewhere when SC fills up but it will do for now.

@Gordon - Like you say those early ones just show the journey as it unfolds. I will no doubt look back on the some of the more recent work and have a similar view in a few years time, once I start moving forward again, especially the impros. Thanks for your support last night. There will be a slot available on OM3 !!

@Jonathon - Thanks for that ! Yep JA were a great band back in the day and I just love Grace's vocals. The intro was the hardest part but a great song

Toby just a quick update: halfway through, so far no complaints from anyone nor damaged hearing!

Wow what a fantastic catalogue of songs you have gathered Toby throughout the years. Besides seeing your improvement in playing it also shows that with every recording you were getting more and more confidence ehich led you to publishing first video recording. It just shows that dedication, hard work and motivation can make person do things one couldn't imagine before. All the best my friend.

Keep on rockin' my friends

Holy Mary mother of you know who ... Toby that is a stellar collection.
Bravo and kudos for curating it all.
From where you were then to where you are now ... to infinity and beyond ... a truly inspirational set.
You may have inspired me to do similar.

You must have started at the wrong end  ;)

Adi/Richard

Thanks guys. It was certainly confidence boosting even a couple of years ago, to go back and replay the early days. I meant to start putting the catalogue together then but life events got in the way. To some degree I am glad I left until and posted it to include all the "live" performances. Although its for my record and a reflection of my journey, I hope it inspires others to do like wise. And something for newbies to look at and see what can be done. But as I said in the intro, I have more to learn so more to add.

Cheers
Toby
