That is pretty cool Toby and quite a thing to put together. I've slowly cleared down a lot of what I had on my soundcloud so probably the more cringeworthy has gone...although I did endeavour to keep most of milestones moments so my first - three little birds - recording is still there, alongside some of those I spent months on recording, layering and mastering (only to have forgotten now). It's nice to see where you've come from and although the OM seemed like a high bar to take part in ACTUALLY I think most people were reasonably comfortable the last time. Just about pushing the boundaries each time.

OK I just went back to edit my catalogue entry to add Chapter 7 of the Madman's Diaries and found it was too old to edit. So skip the waffle and drop down to the end in bold. Oh and I had also added Chapter 6 to the Diaries list since the first catalogue post. So that's now 45 recordings !!

LONG LONG TIME AGO…………………….

Been meaning to do this for quite a while now but it seems more significant, given how 2021 has started.

So, after 25 years of owning a guitar and many years of pathless wandering before finding JustinGuitar back in late 2012 and starting the BC in March the next year, I have now just completed my third “live” performance!!

The Open Mic initiatives, instigated by Rossco1/Jason have really given me the opportunity to look back and see how far I’ve come. Realistically, I need to discount all those years I was going round in circles, so I’ll measure this from March 2013 when I first started the “Classic” Beginners Course.

If you had asked me back then, if I would ever play to an audience, even an online one, I would have laughed in your face, heck six months ago? Same answer, no way Jose!!

But I have just completed the JGC Open Mic 2 (May 15 2021), which was proceeded by our very first JGC Open Mic Trial (April 23 2021) and just a week ago, the very first JustinGuitar Showcase trial, livestreamed to an in-house YouTube audience (7 May 2021) playing in front of the man himself. Cool!! And the timing is perfect.

Over the last few days, I have gone back over the recordings I have made, since being here and have finally compiled a catalogue of my efforts.

Boy there are some rough ones right at the start and I’m glad to say it gradually got better, well at least in my opinion. There is still a long way to go and I have so much more to learn but this year and the last couple of months, draws a huge line in the sand. I feel I can call myself a guitarist…………..kind of !!

So, this is where my recording “career” started back in September 2014 using Audacity and about three quarters of the way through the old “classic” Beginners Course. Things have changed a hell of a lot since then but here is that first little acorn.

Isn't it an unbelievable feeling to look back to lesson 1 stage 1, the moment when one finally found the teacher, the path, the way to becoming a musician. And then to reflect on how much further one has progressed beyond what your wildest dreams were back on that day.

That inspires me to continue to learn, practice, and make music, be it originals, covers, or live performances. And now I know that when it comes to playing (even singing to a degree) if I dream it I can ultimately do it with enough time and practice.

I hope people just starting out with the first Beginner Course modules and having doubts read this and take inspiration from your story, mine, Jason's (shared on his RC recently), and many others who sound so impossibly good on AVOYP. Know that everybody was filled with those doubts as they struggled through the early days, weeks, and months. But patient, persistent deliberate practice pays off and you'll do similar in time.

Thanks again for continuing to inspire as you share your story Toby and light up the Forum as the Madman from Normandy.
Began the adventure Dec 2016 expecting little, achieved more than I dreamed and am a happy advancing beginner

Sometimes its just surreal, when I think back to my fumbling around 25 years ago and the wasted time between and before JustinGuitar !! And yes I hope some newbies read this and draw inspiration. There has been a lot talk about "can't do that" or "I'll never be able to do this" and I know there are folks out there with physical limitation but the biggest obstacle to progress is the thing between your ears. If you are willing to put the time, effort and focus and be patient anything is possible. A year ago I was pretty much resigned to the fact I would never be able to sing and play but like a dog with a bone, I was not going to give it up. And for whatever reason at the end of last year it clicked and boy did click some more over the last 8 months. I hope the Madman's Diaries reflect that and show if you are a stubborn old git anything is possible.

And its great to see updates from the likes of you and Jason etc, who have all trod the same path and are a testament to "ITS DOABLE!!"

So come folks, just get on and do it !

Cheers

Toby

Great update Toby and what a terrific catalogue of songs too! Well done.

Time, effort, focus and patience. Absolutely that’s what it takes and I think us of a certain age grasp that more than some others.
I follow a lot of the threads on the forum and all too often it’s “I’ve been playing for 6 weeks and getting nowhere”. “What stage should I be at after 6 months?”

I don’t know if Justin Guitar will be around 30 years from now, but if it is, I suspect the very same posts will be made and the very same advice will be given!

I too hope others will take inspiration from your story/journey.

Gordon

Thank you my friend. Patience is THE key word but oft ignored in this instant gratification era. If I can't shred two weeks after buying this darned thing I give up !!

I just recently found some practice routines outside of JG that I am finding useful - dexterity, finger and picking control kind of sums it up - in my desire to up my game with lead and impro. They come from a couple of sources but one gives a simple 4 finger chromatic walk up across 4 frets but keeping your fingers in place from their starting position. He advised that you need to do this for a minimum of 30 days before it will begin to be imbedded in your play, the goes on to say some techniques will take 2 years before thay are truly absorbed physically and mentally.

Doing that first exercise I found I could not move my ring finger from E to A it was stuck, super glued. As an angst riddle wotsit in a previous life I would have said, screw this I am off down the pub !! But I persisted and after 2 days 4 or 5 times a day, the fingers started moving !! and moving independently, which is what it is all about, control and flexibility. For 3 days I could not get the 5th string to ring out clean as I moved each finger to it slowly, it was all thunk thud yuk. Day 4 and another few attempts and oo less mute. Onwards and onwards taking baby steps. I know this will improve my playing along with the other 6 exercises I am now doing daily but I have the patience to know it will take time, a looonnnggg time. So I'll stick to it. There ain't no magic wand and if some one shows you one they are probably a politician not a guitarist. No short cuts, lots of hard graft and a shed load of patience. Blimey Guns and Roses wrote a damn fine song about it.

If you are just starting pay attention. Its a long hard road but every step will be a wonderful experience, ask Lau Tzo.

“A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step”

Cheers
