I'm having trouble with the octaves riff of Closing Time.  I can easily create the correct shapes with my left hand, but I have a lot of trouble "muting" the 4 other strings that are not the strings in question.  I either (1) miss those strings, (2) accidentally press them down, or (3) accidentally mute the strings I'm supposed to be playing!

Any tips on muting the un-played strings more efficiently?

Can you play 5th string root power chords? If not, start there. Octave shapes are just a more advanced form of muting than you use for power chords. Mute the sixth string with the tip of your index finger and mute the 1st and 2nd strings with the underside of your index finger. Keep at it. It will come with practice. Once you've got it as power chords, lift off your 3rd finger. It's almost exactly the same, but you might need to adjust your index finger to mute the intervening string as well. Muting power chords and octaves is a delicate business. Once you get it down you can pretty much strum all 6 strings with confidence, if you want.
