A Christmas Story (really)
« on: December 10, 2015, 10:33:05 pm »
A KIND OF CHRISTMAS STORY

I don't post often these days so many of you newcomers don't know me as the driven songwriter who picked up a guitar five or six years ago in middle age and gave it my all.   I did my own thing, I collaborated, I joined a kind of a band briefly, I sang out at open mics.  I found Justin's site and had some great experiences here.   I collaborated on this site and with friends.  I was happy and driven.  Then I had a bit of a challenge in my personal life. Things slowed down.  But never stopped.

A year ago I wrote a poem about Christmas that some friends encouraged me (and I mean really encouraged me) to turn into a song.  I was perhaps at some sort of a nadir, but I was still writing a bit.   It took a while, but I wrote the song and I was proud of it.  I may have posted an earlier version of it here.

But...  the truth is that you're limited to what you can do with a song when you only just started playing music a few years ago.  However, my ears for other artists I could both learn from and love were always open. During the dark times I met this musician fellow via YouTube doing a cover of a Joni Mitchell song, and followed the breadcrumbs to his own work. As some music does for each of us, his changed the world for me. His name is John Elliott and his band is The Little Unsaid.

Last year when he was fundraising for his new LP Fisher King, I asked if he would consider covering a song I wrote. This is his version of my song, A Child's Christmas in New York. Music can change your life.

Happy winter, you all.

That was nice. They've done a very good job of covering that.

Hi Bunny,

I think he's done a stunning job, but the source material was great to start with. :) Katja and I were listening to your original just the other day - for me it's one of your strongest vocals. I hope you are putting this out as a full release as it's worthy of a place on the Xmas song playlist.

Great to see you back in J's - we miss you.

Digger

I hear this and wonder why I'm not hearing it on the airwave.  Excellent.

Yet.  :)  I am only now figuring out the selling part of things.   Or shall we say, the "making available" part.   In any case, thank you all for the kind feedback and all your support to date.   I've had some great times with people on this forum.   Glad to be able to share something that makes me feel I didn't waste anyone's friendship or help.

Pat

As folks have said an excellent cover of YOUR song. Really cool the band recorded it but as Digger said they had a good base as I recall the original you posted and your great vocals. Hope things are heading in the right direction for you now.
