First live gig with a band
« on: April 02, 2015, 12:01:35 am »
Just had my first live gig with a band.  It was great.  It is surprising how different you sound with 170 people in front of you, versus a large empty room the night before in rehearsal.  I almost thought somebody was unplugged or muted.  All those bodies really absorb the sound you put out.

I'll have to ask at work tomorrow.  I saw three people with video cameras.  It was a work function...sort of like a departmental TownHall forum thing with food and a guest speaker.

Our setlist...

Blue Suede Shoes
China Grove
Stop Draggin My Heart Around
Hit me with Your Best Shot
Dreams
Sharp Dressed Man
Ring of Fire
Knockin on Heaven's door
Don't Stop Believin

I played acoustic on Blue Suede Shoes, Dreams, Ring of Fire, and Knockin on Heaven's door.  Sang lead on China Grove.  It was a blast.  53 years old and I feel like a kid again.

Great and +1 good vibes. Love hearing about people who get to a point where they can start playing live.

I really don't know how much I contributed but it was fun.

Blue Suede Shoes - Helped me practice my palm muting, and a swing strumming rhythm.

Dreams - It really is only F and G, with a Am somewhere.  Fmaj7 saved my life, since I can't do the big F or hit a bar chord yet.

Ring of Fire - was tricky since it has some quick changes for a beginner.  Plus keeping up with coworker Andy was a challenge.  He actually played with some of Johnny Cash's band members a long time ago and has been pickin a guitar for 30 years.

Awesome! Did you get a stage fright? Many new players who had their first gig, including me bac then, experienced that.

Two weeks ago we did a short notice jam at our CIO's retirement ceremony.  Since it was a retirement we added Margaritaville, and Take it Easy to our set list.  Both with just one day of practice!  After practice the previous night I must have played it again 5-6 times when I got home.  Still not really smooth, but it was fun.  I wish I could sing and play at the same time.  I'd like to try Margaritaville after some more practice.
