At the Park
« on: October 02, 2014, 12:07:15 am »
I'm trying to get more comfortable playing out in public.
So, i've been leaving work early so i can go sit and play my acoustic at a nearby park, where there's people.
There almost assuredly all strangers. I'm not 'busking', just enjoying the day.
I don't do the vocals and usually only play the opening, verse, chorus.
At first i felt very awkward being the 'guitar dude', but i'm gradually getting over the awkwardness.
Most people just walk on past, some gesture a hello, some (few) have even made comments (all positive).

I'm trying to get to where i can do acoustic 'gigs' for a lil scratch (and a beer).
I started late in life (at 45).
Next step - get out to more open-mics.

Anyone else go hang-out anonymously at the park and play?

I've played at a local park a couple times with a buddy of mine. At that point I had never played guitar in front of strangers, so it was a bit nerve-wracking. We learned probably 10 or so songs - I played the rhythm parts and he played the melody over the top.

I was very surprised at the positive response people gave us. There were several people who made a point to come over and thank us for playing, make a little small talk or ask what other songs we knew how to play.

In my opinion, this is a very good option for people who want to get out of the bedroom but aren't yet comfortable playing 'in front of people' in a jamming or gigging situation. People aren't there to watch or listen to you, and if you do get people to stop it just means they enjoy it enough to take the time to stop and listen!
