weird song file question - drm
« on: July 13, 2014, 08:45:34 am »
About a decade ago I used musicmatch jukebox, and bought several albums through them. I was recently going through my old HDD to import songs, and found that these are drm protected. Since then they have gone out of business.

Now those files are locked. Is there any way to recover those wma files, or are they just lost to time?

see if vlc can play them, if not, they're probably lost.

You didn't buy the music - you bought a license to play it. That license can (and has) been revoked. That's the problem with DRM, but most people are willing to put up with it without giving too much though to the consequences.

Should be able to remove it..

Email me one file... sometimes some of my software just automatically strips that stuff. There are other ways though.

Mark subject TEST DRM so I don't lose it.

Thanks for the replies.
Been in and out a lot lately, so haven't had much time to mess with it. I was able to get back and check the files out again briefly though. Turns out it's just one album that I can't get to play. Tried vlc, and it just exits out of the song right away.

I'll send one of the files over tomorrow TB, if the offer still stands. If not, no big deal.

Thanks again.

Yep, send it on.... Sometimes Vegas or SoundForge will simply open things and not care about any copy protection.

Personally I have never bought anything with DRM....

Another thing you can do... some old and maybe new camcorders will strip copy protection. I know I have an old Sony MiniDV camera that would strip the CP if I captured say a VHS tape through it. You may get some loss that way but at least you have it.

Which album is it btw? On the off chance I already have it, I mean you paid for it once....

I tried Reaper and Cubase LE. Didn't think to try Vegas.

I'd be pretty surprised if you have it. It's L7 -Hungry For Stink. Not a great album, but some decent songs if you like that sort of thing.
