Some covers - honest feedback wanted
« on: October 11, 2013, 04:15:42 am »

Hi guys,

I have a few (acoustic guitar + vocal) covers up. Began learning guitar a year and a bit ago from this site!

Would appreciate feedback on guitar technique, singing, recording, production, anything :)

Here are the latest couple:

- Riptide - Vance Joy cover

- White Blank Page - Mumford & Sons cover

Cheers,
AJ

Wow nice man... I'm not in a position to critique but I thought they were both great. Nice first post.

A year??  :o  Amazing!

You're very talented. I have no critique for the vocals and guitar. I think they're both very good.

I would consider moving the guitar to the outsides of the soundstage and widen the background vocals as well.

Nice job!

Wow. Fantastic. Sounds great.
Just wondering about how you recorded the harmonies, did you overdub or use reverb filters or something. I've been trying to do something similar and can't quite get it.

This is wicked awesometastic! You sound great - both vocals and guitar.

I love the harmony vocals, too. They sound fantastic on your cover of Home. I wish I could do something like that.

Are you into writing your own stuff as well?

Fantastic! I don't know what else to say.

Oh hey, meant to also ask, are you going to post a vid of you playing the 12 string.
You can't just let it show in the video and not expect to get requests ;)

Hi,
Thanks so much for all your comments, will try and reply to all!

Scooter I will try experimenting with the panning etc in my next cover to try and get the sound that you are looking for... I have been reading up a little on production and what you've suggested seems to come up a lot so will definitely work on it.

knotworthy yep I overdub them and use reverb on all vocals... I actually have a free reverb plugin at the moment which is very much adjustable + has lots of presets. Look for "EpicVerb" it's great. (PS. his other plugins are pretty good too)

Katja I'm struggling with time at the moment (and inspiration haha) so struggling to write my own music but will get to it eventually. :)

knot about the 12 string... sure why not, I will do something at some point! I just seem to love my Taylor too much that other acoustics have been neglected but maybe you're right... need to switch it up a bit!

Thanks again for your feedback guys... hopefully the next few covers will do the trick in terms of the stuff that's been suggested!

That is unbelievably good for one year of online self teaching. I don't think I have ever seen anyone progress that quickly.

Did you sing and play other instruments prior?

Hi Aj,

I thought the playing and vocals were both very good - especially the vocals. Nice harmonies. Production sounds great too.
Can't say much else - certainly nothing to fault.

Nice one.

Hi TB,
No I used to DJ a fair bit and sung in the shower all my life :P
So I suppose it wasn't as hard in terms of rhythm etc, it was just a matter of learning how to play the chords and then just practice with listening to songs.

I also started vocal lessons a few months ago which have really helped.

Thanks digger let me know if you have some of your stuff available I will check it out!

watched this again, it's truly amazing how you achieved that in a year.
In terms of general skill and playing+singing; you skipped over many of us, including me :)

I have watched these videos several times and I love the cover of mumford and sons. I have been struggling to think of anything to say other than that was amazing!

If I ever get to the stage where I can play like that I will die a happy man.

Looking forward to the next video.
