Hello,   :D

I'm still struggling on this one.
I've been practicing for a while. But it seems I'm experiencing a kind of "stucking unimprovable zone"  right now.

It's a great exercise but I'm not sure if I'm doing right. Coz it is still very hard to handle.
And when I say very hard, I mean I can't get more than C, G, D and barely A and E.
And it does takes me a lot of concentration. Usually I give up on B  :-[
So I've never speed up the metronome too.  :-\

I'm still on level 5 in the beginner course and started guitar 5 years ago. Maybe this explain that...
But... Arf! It so frustrating to not be able to speed up and to be stuck at speed 40-60! lol

Anyway I was wondering if you guys could give any advice for this exercice.
And also if you guys think it would be great to see Justin practicing this skill on a video ?
So it would be a bonus motivation to see how far can we go on this exercise.

Thank you

There are other way to approach memorizing all the notes on the neck.  Justin mentions that on the page.

So do you have all the notes memorized on the 6th and 5th strings?  You need those for the most common bar chord roots.  Do that.

Then you automatically know the notes on the first string.

Now if you know the 6th string notes you can find and know every 4th string root because there is an octave shape that looks like this, F on the 6th string 1st fret and the octave on the 4th string 3rd fret:

D-------3----------
A-----------------
E--1---------------

You move that shape up and down the neck.

Learn the individual octave shapes and use those to help .

Now that I'm at my PC, here is how I would approach memorizing my B's.

I'll start with the B on the 6th string 7th fret:

Code: [Select]
E|--------7--------7--------|
B|--------------------------|
G|--------------------------|
D|-----9--------9-----------|
A|--------------------------|
E|--7--------7--------------|

I think of this as the "E shape" set of octaves.  These are the octaves that are played in the E shape chord.

So now lets stay on the 6th string B, here is another octave:

Code: [Select]
E|--------7--------7--------|
B|--------------------------|
G|-----4--------4-----------|
D|--------------------------|
A|--------------------------|
E|--7--------7--------------|

This is the G shape octave.  When you play a G shape chord, this is where the roots land.

Now lets go to the B on the 5th string, 2nd fret:
Code: [Select]
E|--------------------------|
B|--------------------------|
G|-----4-----4--------------|
D|--------------------------|
A|--2-----2-----2-----------|
E|--------------------------|

This is the A shape octave.  Again where the roots are located when you play and A shape chord.

Staying at the 5th string second fret:

Code: [Select]
E|--------------------------|
B|-----0-----0--------------|
G|--------------------------|
D|--------------------------|
A|--2-----2-----2-----------|
E|--------------------------|

This is the C shape octave.

Finally:

Code: [Select]
E|--------------------------|
B|----12----12--------------|
G|--------------------------|
D|--9----9-----9------------|
A|--------------------------|
E|--------------------------|

The D shape octave.

Generalize the shapes for any notes and play them different ways.  For F:
Code: [Select]
E|-----------------------------13-----------------------------------|
B|--------------------6---------------------------------------------|
G|------------10----------10----------------------------------------|
D|----3------------3------------------------------------------------|
A|---------8--------------------------------------------------------|
E|-1----------------------------------------------------------------|

or play them simultaneously

E|----1--------------13------13-----------|
B|-------6---6----------------------------|
G|---------------10--10--10---------------|
D|-3--3--3--------------------------------|
A|-----------8---8------------------------|
E|-1---------------------13--13-----------|

Ok! I wrote the essential ideas on a paper and will practice these shapes :)

I do know all the notes on my 6th and 5th strings...
So I also know automatically my 1st one...
Then... with the E and A shapes octaves, I know my 4th and 3rd strings...
And finally I have to work on my 2nd string, implying D shape octave :D

Thank you Shadow. Now I can move on!

Can't wait to play all these shapes simultaneously too! :D
