Guitar Challenge 0001 - Playing it 'wrong'
« on: July 18, 2013, 03:36:46 pm »
Howdy folks,

I've been brought to this concept for two reasons.

Here's one: http://youtu.be/HiARYerpFv4?t=18m - where Capt. Lee talks about 'inappropriate rigs'. If I had a 5150 and could play Joe Pass, I swear would've done it to kick this one off, but I can't.

The other one was just messing with tone and playing around with a riff. Which is what I'll start with in a few.

Of course, there is no 'wrong'. Only to purists, maybe. But we don't buy into that, do we?

The idea:
Choose a riff, a passage, a part of a song, even a whole song.
Play it differently, with different gear, different tones, different style, or a combination of all of the previous.

The rules:
If it sounds good, it is good.
The possibilities are endless, so be creative!

The format:
Video or audio.
Format the title like this: Playing it 'wrong': <song title> (<artist/band name>)
And in the description: <riff, passage, part designation> - <summary of your take on it, like gear or stylistic peculiarities> by <your forum handle>

I'll kick it off with...

Always on the Run (Lenny Kravitz feat. Slash) - main riff - Twangin' on a Taylor SolidBody Classic through a Vox AC30CCH by Cue Zephyr.

VIDEO

Before you ask - no, I don't have a Telecaster and yes I would like to own one at some point.

Curious to see what y'all come up with! So, bring it on!

Removed....in retrospect, it didn't really fit the theme.

Haha... i was just goofing around in the game and took the chords and notes from the song and just sort of jammed with them over the track sans lead guitar

Looking at the thread again, this may be a different kind of "wrong" than was intended.

Just to be clear CZ, if I say whacked a part of a tune into a looper, and were to mess about over the top it, keeping the familiar base but just played "wrong", is that the kind of thing you're looking for? Because if it is I did three yesterday (without seeing this thread) I was just messing about with my amp, trying different combinations of pickup, amp models and effects. I Ended up with a few decent mellow loops, and decided to record them.

I dont think it's exactly what you're looking for so I haven't posted anything. I didn't apply any science to it, I wasn't thinking well this is played on a strat N3 bridge pickup with a marshal amp, so I'll use the 57 PAF neck pickup on my SG and play it on an acoustic amp model with some chorus ...  :o

I was just messing about with easy progressions ...  :)

Bradt-

You should leave your song up, I thought it was cool! Maybe not exactly what CZ had in mind when he started the thread, but it was still a good effort and your playing fit the song pretty perfectly. If I hadn't seen it linked through this thread and listened for the 'wrongness' of it then I might not have even realized you were playing it so differently :P

For the most part, I intended it to be about playing it stylistically different, where the tone or instrument supports the style.

I say tone or instrument because I don't have access to a Telecaster but tried to coax every bit of twang out of it that I could. ;)

Right. Let's try this again. The original is electronic beats and synths with one electric guitar in the verses.

Here's one....Plug in Baby from Muse. I was goofing around using the synth emulator on my new amp and figured I'd record something "wrong". I even almost got all the notes right.

ah cool another Muse post, didn't see it when recording this in my kitchen being inspired by Cue's challenge.

Don't mind the yelling children in the background; this is a single-taker :)
It's a bit of a mashup.
Don't take this seriously, this is a -joke-:)

song: Bliss (by Muse)
style: Icon (by Daan)

With some Elvis sauce.

Finally some participants. :)

Sounds cool both. :)

bradt,
Interesting synth sound. If you put a little more time in getting the notes right I'd be convinced. :)

Lieven,
I like that Elvis sauce! :D

I posted this before in the "Audio or video of you playing" thread.. but it fits the criteria here I think.. My own version of a Beatles song:

Playing it wrong: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" The Beatles
 - ad-libbed vocal part with Strat.

I'm not crazy about Groove Armada's rapping, DJ type music.... but they have a couple of killer songs that I really like.

That's one and At The River is the other... check out the studio and live in Brixton versions.

So, what started out as working on barre chords ended up as just jamming with some power chords on my acoustic. I was pretty much just messing around with muting and rhythms with random chord changes, and something started sounding familiar. I played with the chords some and started messing with the rhythm, and had to laugh when I realized what it was. It actually doesn't sound too bad. I may try and work on it some as a cover at some point.

I wonder how long it will take you all to get it.
