Beginner Songs - Q&As

re: The Boxer

Is the picking pattern on page 32 a simplified version, i've watched a couple youtube covers and most people seem to be playing strings 5,3,4,2,6,3,4,2, someone also suggests the actual pattern is 1.2+3+4+, so you miss out the first hit of string 3, i guess if it sounds good it is good applies.

Anyway I've been glued to this book since it dropped through the door and love the spiral binding, keeping the first one open while playing was a real pain lol.

Jam.

re: Babylon

Having trouble with the hammer-on with the Dmaj9F# chord.  The hammer-on comes off clearly but still too softly.  Do you have a tip on how I can get the effect to come off so it consistently rings strong and and loud like Gray does?

re: Babylon

I just noticed that the bass note of the Dmaj9/F# isn't really played with the second finger,  it's actually played with the thumb.  I switched to using my thumb and that has helped having to have my stronger third finger available for the hammer-on.  Much stronger sound now that I'm not using my pinky!   :)

re: The Boxer

Video would be great, but I would be happy with some explanations on the Intro lick as well.

When reading the intro it says this is a C7 but when looking at the tab in am pretty hopeless to recognize what chord this should be, as well as I am not really trained to read to for fingerstyle.

What does m i p m mean? Is it middle finger, index finger and pinky?

Would be grateful for some hints

It's middle, index, thumb, middle. Pulgar is Spanish for thumb.

I don't know why it says C7 though.

re: The Boxer

Surely G (300023) and G7 (100023) are the same in this song, since you don't play the high e string? Anyone got a good way of distinguishing between the two?

Bongo,

Just so you know, the typical convention to write a chord is from low strings to high (in terms of pitch) so
G (320003) and G7 (320001).

I picked up the book last week and have hit an immediate issue with Babylon. I have seen another teacher say that the top string should be tuned down a tone to D.

The Dmaj9/F# and F#m11 chords don't sound right to me at all (I have capo on first fret). There doesn't seem to be a video of Justin doing this song available.

Can anyone confirm if the top string should be tuned down?

Went and dug up and surveyed several  tutorials online and only one of them lowered the high e string to D.

The rest used standard tuning with a capo on the first fret.

For "Babylon," I had pretty much the same results on the Web as what Shadow found, and the David Gray - The Hit Singles book I ordered in April (all the way from the UK, but before I received Justin's books) also shows standard tuning.

Thanks to Sulmona for mentioning the different grip for the Dmaj9F#. I might otherwise have overlooked that. I feel a practice session coming on, later tonight.  8)

I don't believe Justin has released a video of that particular song yet.
