« on: December 02, 2012, 08:37:07 pm »
I am trying to help someone in USA find a legit copy of windows XP 64 bit with serial number that will legally activate.

Very important it's legal and will activate. Been very difficult to find a copy.

He might have some luck asking around local PC tech stores for an OEM version.
Oddly enough my machine shipped with XP 64 when I bought it but it lacked sufficient support at the time so I dumped it for 32. unfortunately it's OEM so the code can't be used twice (he's welcome to the code if he wants to try it though, legally I can guarantee the code is not in use and is genuine)

Any particular reason it needs to be XP?

Something about some software that his daughter needs to run from her school. He said he would go win7 if it were not for that.

Can the raw media for XP64 still be downloaded from MS? He said he lost his copy in a move then his daughters pc got a virus and they had to wipe the drive. I guess that's when he figured he had lost his SN.

Whatever the software is, on pretty much any version of windows newer than XP:

Right-click the icon or file name
Select Properties
Select the Compatibility tab
Run it to be compatible with Windows XP
If XP isn't on the list, try Vista.

You only have to do that once, then every time you run it, it should work fine.

Except that some software just won't work in compatibility mode.
Especially CAD/Drawing applications and videogames refuse to play nice with it at times.

@TB : If your friend can find his original key sticker, he can request microsoft to get him a link for the .iso, or they can ship him a disc at a small fee (although i'm not sure if they will still ship XP discs at this point, considering how close it is to it's EOL).

Hell, i just realised, if he had a legit version before, Microsoft should have a record of it, as they register those keys to name+adress if you properly register.
If he did register it, he could contact them and explain the situation, they might be willing to help him out.

That's what I was thinking too. I didn't ask him yet if he tried that.  Although you do;t really have to register and product. You just have to activate it.  You can do both as well. So it's possible they never his info.... and he has moved. So enough gray areas they might not help.
