I'm struggling with the finger style strum pattern in this. Is it me or is the pick on the 4th string not being played when Justin demos the song. I'm playing how Justin says but it doesn't sound right.

Thanks

Jamie

It's hard to pick up but it's there.  That 4th string pluck on the "and" gets a bit swallowed up by the bass note and the fact that the next count you are strumming so the note doesnt get much of a chance to ring out.
I'm still working on the pattern a bit too.  It sounds right when I get it going though.
Even if it isn't that noticable if nothing else it's a good placeholder for the count.
1 - thumb
& - 4th string pluck
2 - strum
& - 2nd string pluck
3 - thumb
& - 4th string pluck
4 - strum
& - 2nd string pluck

Every count has something going on, for me this makes the pattern easier to keep going.
Great song, been having lots of fun with it so far - long way to go yet though!

These kind of patterns grow as you practice them. I show you where I think you should start but it's not exactly 'right' but it's the place where I think you'll get to right ;)

You have to do it slow and careful and then let it grow on it's own with practice!

So yes I amvhaving a hard time with the Fm barre.  So I am trying the smaller F and Fm. Question.  How does the strum patten differ for a four string chord?

As I recall it, you need to hit the bass note from the thick E string on the F and Fm, so the 'mini' chords will probably not work very well in this song. It's worth persevering with the full barre chords -  you'll have to learn them some time :)

I have to agree with Andy. Part of learning a song is learning the chords. There's no time like the present
to learn the F and Fm barre chords.  :)

For the fingerstyle pattern for the song, is there a specific reason as to why the 5th string is plucked with the ring finger as opposed to the conventional middle finger on the "and" beat after beats 2 and 4? I find it more natural for me to pluck with the middle finger.

Can anyone tell me how you play the halfbar C and halfbar G/B fingerstyle ?

1 - thumb &  4th string pluck for C?
2 - strum & - 2nd string pluck for G/B?

Hey Colli,

I think you should change from C to G/B this way

C chord :
1 - thumb
& - 4th string pluck
2 - strum
& - 2nd string pluck

-> Change to G/B
3 - thumb
& - 4th string pluck
4 - strum
& - 2nd string pluck

-> Change to Am

As well on the video, Justin does a variation during the intro when playing the E chord.
I don't know if it's the proper way to play it, but it sounds cool :

E
1 - thumb
& - 4th string pluck
2 - strum
& - 1nd string pluck
3 - thumb
& - 2th string pluck - 3rd fret
4 - strum
& - 2nd string pluck

And then hammer on the Am chord and thumb at the same time!

What is the approximate BPM this song?  Is it around 80 or more like 160?  It always seems like I am playing this too fast.  If I tap my feet to the original version I seem to get a leisurely 80 BPM. But when I try to play it that seems to slow.  I've been working on that darn picking pattern since this book came out. Getting better and I am determined to crack this. But to play faster than I should is just making it harder.
