Pickup Electronics

Dear People,

I am looking to learn all the nitty gritty electronics that are associated with pickups and how they alter the tone...could somebody please suggest some links/even books to help me get going?...something that explains a 'standard' pickup and then branches out to accommodate the  common varieties would be really nice

There is a DIY site devoted to electronics that has a complete forum for pickup winding. Many big names there. Can't recall the forum though.
