Hi all,

In the beginning of the video "Love me do" he mentions the little intro riff.
Try to figure it out but unfortunately so far not been able to.
Someone knows how to play the intro riff of "Love me do"

It's played on a harmonica but you can play it on the guitar. It's A7 A6 A Then play the A string open 4
times or strum the A chord.

X02223 X02222 X02220 AA AA the last line is A D C# A

Ive problem in getting the right strumming pattern 1-2-3-4, I hear extra down-up on 3rd note.
any help to get it right would be really appreciated.

Wish there was a bit more instruction with this song as had been present in the previous ones regarding how many strums per chord, bars etc...

When I watch and listen and try and transcribe this I feel chord changes after just two strums at times, sometimes more etc.

For a beginner having precise instructions really helps.

One bar = 4 strums = |A | = Strum A four times. This is the simplest strumming pattern.

Chorus:
|A |D | Love, love me do,
|A |D | You know I love you.
|A |D | I'll always be true
|D |D | So please-----
pause=no chord
|A |D | love me do, oh
|A |D | love me do.

Bridge:
|E |E | Someone to love
|D |A | Somebody new.
|E |E |
|D |A |

Justin gives you a slightly more complex strumming pattern = |1 2+3 4| with an accent on beat two.

Intro: (similar to the chorus)
|A |D |
|A |D |
|A |D |
|D |D |

Hi Justin - first of all, thanks for EVERYTHING you do...your site has been very helpful.

I am writing to confirm that the chords for Love Me Do are A, D and E per your lesson...I see them as G, C, D just about everywhere else I look and it appears from the video of the original performance on your site that George is playing the G, C D progressions.

Any insights you can provide are greatly appreciated.

Justin is teaching A D E because it's in the stage 1 songs. Stage 1 lessons are A D E chords.

Now a little theory: A D E is the 1 4 5 progression in the Key of A.
G C D is the 1 4 5 progression in the Key of G

So you can play it either way and it will be right.

Are the strumming patterns in the book? I am having trouble understanding\figuring them out. I see a previous post that tried to give them, just wondered if I missed something as I am struggling with this at the moment.

Yes the strumming patterns are all in the book. I have to admit buying the book is the best thing i ever did.

Thanks for the reply. I actually have the book, but I must be missing how the strumming patterns are documented or something. I have the 2nd edition of the book. On page 22/23 the only thing I see it mention is accent the '2' section on page 23.

PS-Sorry if there is an issue with posting this pic. If so let me know and I will remove it as I am not trying persuade anyone from not buying Justin's book and very much appreciate his work and the site!

I just checked my 2nd edition copy and the strum pattern is listed at the bottom of page 23 like you said. That's the format he uses throughout the book. It's downstrums on beats 1, 2, 3, and 4 with one upstrum on the and after 2 and an accent on beat 2. I don't know if he says something different in the video lesson. Sometimes he gives even more options there.

It's a stage one song like all stage one songs you start with all down strums until you have the song down
and can play it all the way through. Then you try the strumming pattern. Justin explains it all in the
video.

I appreciate all the replies, seriously. I am just not getting it I guess. In the video he seems to indicate 4 strums per bar (which I am assuming is per line in the book), but this doesn't seem to make sense.

For instance, these two lines from the book when/how many strums?

I think I see the problem now. When you see the chord written in the book(e.g. D or A), that means one bar of D or A. For this song that means four down strums on the D chord. You do that 4 down strums pattern each time a chord is written. Once you get comfortable with that then you can try the suggested more complicated pattern with the up strum on the "and" after the 2nd downstrum. Does that make more sense?

Also, this is a pretty fast song, so don't feel like you have to play at the same tempo as The Beatles. Go at your own pace that you can play cleanly with good timing.

Question about the A in this song.

I was trying to do the shortened "one finger" A but it doesn't ring or come across quite as well as the standard 3 fingered A we were taught first.

Is this just my inexperience, or in an A heavy song, are we better with the 3-fingered A over the one-fingered A?

The melody you want is On the high e string play 3rd fret 2nd fret open string (G F# E) the on the G string play the 2nd fret
4 time. Once you get that down do the same while playing the A chord.
