Strat Pickup Wiring Preference
« on: January 26, 2012, 02:10:28 am »
My bridge pickup doesn't go through the tone pots.
What's your preference, and why?

This is standard Strat wiring. I like the option of being able to roll off the treble and bass on all pickups a la G&L or Reverend.
Have a peek inside of my Road Case

Thanks!

I need some fret work done and I was thinking about having the bridge pickup wired to the tone pots while it's in.

Scooter-

What the lads are talking about, is what G&L call their 'PTB' system. It's basically having the option to control both treble and bass response, with the option to switch in all three coils at once. I first experienced it when I got my G&L Tribute S500..... and believe me, there's a serious amount of tonal variety to be had with that setup. If you're going for a total rewire, it's well worth looking into.

OK. Thanks. :)

There's so many wiring options. Maybe I'll just get the soldering iron out and try each of them for a day or two.

Right now I like the way the pickups sound on the first four switch positions.. and I like the "bite" that I can get with the bridge pickup, but it would be nice to have some tone control on it. I kinda wish there was a tone control pot just for that pickup... Maybe blending the bridge and neck would still give the bite, but improve the tone?

Thanks Wishbone! I'll look into it.
My level of playing really isn't at the point yet where I should be concerned about this - but I'm starting to switch to the bridge pickup on some leads to get it to cut through, and every time I do, I find myself wanting to change the tone..

I looked into the PTB system, and it's a bit more than what I need or want. I think I'm going to go with example 2 in this article: http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/Issue/2009/Jun/Stratocaster_Tone_Split_Mod.aspx
This is a related article for tone caps:
