I honestly wish I'd found them earlier. Apparently they're doing a gig in my country this month. But it's sold out. Damn.

Happy Jack, if you ever want to hear Ben Andrews in an intimate no production recording session Mapleshade has a CD.

You can listen to a sample.

http://mapleshaderecords.com/cds/56962.php

It's a house up in Maryland. the guy that owns it is an engineer. He gets a bad rap from many engineers because he sells "snake oil" cables and such. He also records raw. no compression and such, just performance to tape.

the CD's are good. they are not to everyone's liking but I'll tell you something.... when I heard that link you posted .... and I didn't even remember the guys name.... but I recognized the personal style and looked this. This new stuff is over produced. But I suppose it sells too.

Anyway if you ever want to hear raw talent captured that Mapleshade stuff is it.

Check out this Clifford Jordan track. and that's an mp3. The CD you can hear everything.
http://mapleshaderecords.com/cds/mp3s/cliffordjordanlive1.mp3

I mean you hear foot taps, finger clicks, dynamics, pads closing on the sax, chair squeaks, mic proximity from artist moving, it's all in there. Again, a lot of people feel that stuff needs to be engineered out and in many respects, rightfully so but I find it really interesting.

Little Afro Cuban world beat. http://mapleshaderecords.com/cds/mp3s/enriquillowinds1.mp3

This track must have 20 - 25dB of dynamic range... http://mapleshaderecords.com/cds/mp3s/sunnylandslim2.mp3
The typical song these days has 4 to maybe 6db.

He's a session musician / producer. To be fair to him, he bought one of the 'Wrecks new from Ken Fisher, before they became legendary, and he's had that old Gibson a looong time. I guess the recent Trainwreck must have cost him a pretty penny, though.

He can play a bit, too ....

Yep! he can play. Yeah, I've known about him for a long time. Posted his links several times.

I was just thinking about the second wreck. Granted he may only have $5K in his old amp and guitar. but if he had to pay full price for that new(old) one, that's a lot of money to own two of the same amp.  Of course like you say, he writes it all off anyway so why not.
