Torn between Audio-Technica AT2035 & AT2020 - your thoughts?
« on: August 10, 2011, 02:14:13 pm »
Lbro is thinking it is time for a condeser Mic. Money is tight now so I am looking at these 2 low end models that come with a rebate until the end of the month.

The AT2020 has no bells or whistles and is a straight Cardioid Polar Pattern as is the AT2035 below. - $51 US with rebate
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/356521-REG/Audio_Technica_AT2020_AT2020_Condenser_Microphone.html
&
Mfg. site / specs: http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/wired_mics/a0933a662b5ed0e2/index.html

While the AT2035 offers more for about $38 US additional cost. - $89 US with rebate
Cardioid Polar Pattern
80Hz High-Pass Filter
-10dB Pad Switch
Shock Mount and Protective Pouch

&
Mfg. site / specs: http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/wired_mics/cebb57a269d232ee/index.html

Are the features above (mainly the High Pass filter & Pad Switch) worth the extra price? I would think the shock mount alone is almost worth the extra cost.

Thanks for your input,
LB

Heard great things about the 3035. It's discontinued now but you should be able to pick one up for a nice price. Good luck.
Guitar, banjo, mandolin and piano, bass and percussion only when needed
Production and mixing

The 3035 was the predecessor to the 2035.
The only difference between them is the 3035 was made in Japan and the 2035 is made in China.

You can't necessarily expect that two mic with the same parts bill will end up the same when manufactured in Japan or China. China has some unusual manufacturing processes, especially when it comes to things like transformers.

This is not to say china can't put out good gear, they can..... but you really need to examine the build of the two and compare quality, etc, before you can rest assured they are the same.

I own quite a bit of Chinese gear, have had to repair some, and seen some deconstructed. There can be -lots- of issues.

Agreed.  I was doing some reading about the two and most people say that if possible, try to get one of the 3035's first. As they have been more reliable in most peoples eyes.

China mics are good to get and modify or have modified.

... and some are really good just as they are.

Sounds likt a crapshoot, but I think for this kind of money for a condeser one is paying for what they get. I do see a 1 year warranty. I should think that is enough time to flush out any issues with the mic. Anyone ever delt with Audio Technica on support or warranty issues?
