Four to the bar strumming is 1 2 3 4, 8th notes are 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
Neither pattern is correct for all songs.
Start with  1 2 3 4 and when you are OK doing that then start doing upstrums too ( 1& 2& 3& 4&)

Downstrums are always on the beat. So the basic 4 to a barre strum is
DDDD or 1234.
1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and is DUDUDUDU. 8 to a barre stumming. But is not
used very often as is. It's usually broken up to something less muddy such as
D D DUD
When struming your hand goes DUDUDUDU whether you hit the strings on every
strum is up to you.

And if you don't have one, get a metronome/metronome app. :)

What is in it? Contents / Format etc
Hi.
Great book.
Easy to understand layout.
Could just do with BPM adding.

Do I need to purchase songbooks to have access to tabs for songs and lessons?

Thanks

Justin doesn't do TAB for songs (most songs anyway), copyright issues. The songbooks are written as chord changes, like this:

No, you don't need them, but they're good to have, and you're putting a little money in Justin's pocket :)
