BEG is a reasonably paced song. It took me a while to get it up to full speed. It's just a case of practise and gradually nudging the speed up on the metronome.

So I’m hoping this is a simple answer. But when I listen to Justin play the lesson and use the tap tempo I get 70ish BPM. then when I listen to the actual song I get the same maybe more like 80 BPM. But it’s apparently 150, what am I doing wrong and if I want to get my strumming up to speed what should I set my metronome too?

Justin may be playing a little slower than the actual track which would explain 70bpm vs 80bpm.
But 150bpm for the original ... no way. Where did you get that figure from?

150bpm's about right.

I've seen anywhere from 120 to 150 BPM.

I'm not anywhere where I can listen and use equipment to check.

Maybe you are tapping on the 1 & 3 or 2 & 4?  This could explain why you are at half speed ... would it?

Double 70 - 80 gets you to 140 - 160 so that is a good call.

Thanks all for your replies. So I’ve just done some quick experimentation and got some weird results.

I just played in my head the song and used a different tap tempo on my desktop and got 130. So close enough given I’m just using the beat I hear when remembering the song.

I thought hmmm maybe it’s the justin website tap tempo. Used it on the desktop and again get around 130.

So I use my mobile (which is what I used originally before asking my question) and again I only get 70.

Justin doesn't use first and 2nd finger in the same fret. The way he plays the G chord is the following:

3x0003 , with the first finger he presses down the 6th string (thickest) where he also mutes the 5th string with the same finger, and obviously he plays the 1st string with the fourth finger (pinky, little). His 2nd finger is always in the air when he plays the G chord. At least from what saw in the beginning of the video..

I think you've answered my question. I came here after trying to work out why Justin's demo seems to use different fingers for G than illustrated in the lesson. It's very hard for me as a rank beginner to transition from C to G and reverse in time for the chord changes. I think Justin has changed his fingers to make it easier?

I'm learning this song and its been great practice for me to develop my rythym, especially using the old faithful pattern. Almost got it down. In terms of BPM, Justin has it set at 132 on the app - i can play along at 122, so almost there.

I do struggle with the build up to the chorus on the D. I can do the 8th note strum alright but i struggle to transition smoothly into the old faithful again for the chorus.
