Find a good chord progression, find a matching melody -> Done.

I have no experience with songwriting but that would be my approach.

Hi

I've tried writing a few. My advice would be not to think about it too much at first - just play around till you find a riff/melody/lick which you like then build off it. Really useful to have some kind of recording gear so you can listen and play over it - helps generate ideas and you can hear if things work or not.

Other than that - listen to lots of different types of music - not just for the way the chords, etc are put together, but for how the songs are structured - intro - verse - chorus, etc. Don't be afraid to mess around.

Keep it simple.

Cheers,

Digger

Yeah Digger has it going there,

At times I feel like songs fall in my lap. I wish they were top chart songs and that I could play em that way but they are not and are more personal with a story often behind them. But I will be messing around on guitar and find a chord sequence that I like. I build upon it and so far the structure part kind of eludes me but I have fun doing "hard work". Recording is really a big key as you can play it back and see what else you might need. Then as the chord progression comes together often something is going on in life, or an idea will come up for the words and lyrics. Diggs is also right that often when trying to play someone elses song you will hit upon a chord sequence that sounds good but is not the original song. You just hear things and see how they progress and for me, whamo I get the chord progressions for my song when I start to think about a new song. No better way than just to dig in and see if something is there. If not listen and try to play other's work. It will inspire your own creative mind within you.

Hope the above helps some,

I haven't written a lot of songs but when I do come up with a cool riff or something I usually hit record and play the hell out of it and let it kinda morph into a song by itself naturally.  Then I'll put it away and listen to it a week later.  If it still sounds cool I might work more on it focusing more on proper structure/changes, etc.

I would just play the first thing that comes into my head and improvise, you get a lot of stuff that doesnt sound good, but sometimes you come across a riff or lick that sounds good and you really like

You can start with the lyrics or a riff or a melody or a chord progression.  Writing to a chord progression has limitations. It will lure you into a melody that has mainly chord to
nes. Its good to have a keyboard. For a first song tho a chord progression is a good idea.
Realism is relative.
