computer Crash - need diags
« on: May 14, 2011, 11:37:03 pm »
Trying to help someone sort out a problem with a PC that runs several audio apps just fine. Live, sonar, but reaper crashes when saving files. For some unknown reason if he runs the buffer size up he can save his project. These are hard BSOD crashes.

I'm trying to get him some diags but so far Memetest86 is it.

do you guys know any good free diags that won't ruin anything.

All the basic update drivers and such are being done, latest versions etc.

I can't understand why changing buffer size would have anything to do saving files.

any thoughts?  Win 7 Ult.

Hardware specs ?
32 or 64 bit OS ?
32 or 64 bit Reaper ?

My first guess is somehow when using the low buffer setting it's causing an overflow.

I'll go dig through my free apps file and drop the links here if i find any.

Aida 64 (formerly know as Everest) comes to mind.
Also, i assume you've already tried analyzing the memory dumps to see if those shed any light on the situation ?

He didn't mention anything about water on the floor.......... oh, oh, you mean that kind of overflow..... sorry.

64bit w7Ult

Reaper 32   :(   He's got 32bit plugs he wants/needs. I'm trying got coax him towards 64 all the way. Trying to get his to look at his error logs in admin center to see if that shows anything. the PC was built by AKD or ADK. Anyway, it's a DAW specific shop that's been around for years. But I think this problem has been going on a while.

2.7 i3 I think 6G ram

No other specs.

No DAW specific hardware installed like specialty recording soundcards or the like ?

And yeah, i guess that when you look at the memdumps you'll be seeing a 32/64 bit clash from one of his plugins.
It's the most common cause that i can find.

Download Hiren's Boot CD
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

There's a bunch of testing tools and useful utilities on there. Including a BSOD scanner that will let you read the mini dump files created by BSOD's
See the link below for all the tools on the CD. Scroll down to near the bottom to see all the testing tools available.

Ok, thanks guys. Yeah I think he has a conflict but he was certain it was Reaper because nothing else did that. I think it's just a conflict he's going to have to hunt down one by one. He's pretty well coming around to the fact that it's not simply Reaper.

those BSOD can often have useful info for tracking down the problem.  does his system just reboot right away or stick on the BSOD and force you to hard shut down ?

if it just reboots then when in windows
Right click Computer and go to properties
then, go to Advanced
then click on settings for startup and recovery ( bottom settings )
and untick automatically restart.

You can turn it back on later, but for debugging its useful to read what the error is and if its the same every time.

Then a little googling will often lead you in the direction of the culprit.  ;)

10-4, thanks DC. I'll pass that too. I actually forgot to ask if he was getting a reboot.
