Viewing Justins videos in China
« on: April 28, 2011, 06:40:50 pm »
hello Justin and others. firstly Justin, thanks so much for everything. you've inspired me to learn more and more and i feel like i'm picking things up so quickly due to your methods. will donate very shortly.

however, have a great concern!

i am emigrating to china in july and youtube is banned there (bleedin' communist government). i'm not sure what i will do if i can't watch your videos when i move away. i won't have a dvd player either. is there any other platform your videos are available online? or is it possible to download them?

i've no idea if that's even possible but i can't stand the thought of not having your videos to watch.

thanks again

I think there was a website that allows you to download youtube videos...
I used to use kissyoutube, but thats down now.

You could download ALL the videos justin made or just the ones you need most :)

can't you work through a proxy, like www.hidemyass.com ?
Hard to test of course... anybody in China right now, reading this and willing to test? :)

Good idea, but I think it still goes through your own ISP (unless you use sattelites, not sure tbh).
And I think the government blocked the sites through the ISP's in China then.
I'm not that experienced with blocked sites by my government.. yay for west-europe :p

I used Tor when I was in China, worked fine, albeit a bit slow.

there are so many things in poland that annoy me but when i see that even something more ridiculous can happen elsewhere it makes me thinking...

aaaaaanyway, i recently used programme called "youtube downloader HD" to download one of justin's lessons and it works fine, you can also choose what quality you wish to download, so this might be also an option for you

how can you download the video's if you can't even access the site?

The User will be able to download old and recent video's, but will not be able to see the vids that come out while in China...

I've never heard of this. If it's something you download, it can't work. However, if it's a website it can work, because the website is situated outside of China.
But, Tor should work OK.

it's a programme that you have to install on your HD but i understood that 'niceandfriendly' wants to download those videos before moving to china

am i right? ???

That would be silly, immigrating to me implies that it's for good, and having to download videos before moving there would be... well, silly. And it would be impossible to gain access to new videos when already in China (or anywhere else that bans YouTube and other media).

thanks everyone for your suggestions.

hmmm this sounds promising. how long were you in china for? i'll have to check out their website.

pretty much, obviously i'd love to watch justins new videos too but at the moment i am just learning guitar, going through justins beginners course. so "pre-downloading" the videos (if this is indeed possible) would be perfectly adequate. thanks again all.

Oh, in that case, I would get Firefox if you don't have it already, and use the Video DownloadHelper.
It's by far the easiest way of grabbing videos. ;)

As I said, Tor should do the trick. But it won't happen any sort of fast. Best way is to open like 5 tabs, let the videos buffer and go away and come back a few hours later. Or, download them right away with the DownloadHelper. That'll be slow too, but at least you have the video in one piece and can come back and view it anytime you want. ;)
