Browsers get cluttered with all kinds of crap installed automatically when you visit certain sites. Not really malware persay but very poorly programmed little applets that are meant to just collect your data but they're usually resource hogs or just get caught in stupid loops, etc. The older the browser, the more likely you are to encounter problems just like the one you described.
You got two solutions. Reinstall your current browser and all add-ons, run driver-sweeper (free download somewhere I'm sure) and then reinstall your browser. Should work fine after that but it will get clogged up again shortly.
The other is to switch to a newly released browser while it's still fresh and all those little poseky addons haven't been written yet. That will last you about a year or two, then you'll have to change to whatever the newest browser will be then.
That's my advice. And my advice works out about half the time, so you're playing the odds here.
