Justin, would you recommend also doing the spider exercise and the finger gym with these practice routines?

I'm thinking leave them out until after the IMF but if you are doing them already it certainly won't hurt!

I always do the finger gym and spider exercises first when I start a practise session to loosen up my fingers, along with strumming a few easy chords.

I might do the same then.. those spider thingys lol.

I was wondering though Justin, i'm doing foundation 2 for 2 weeks now (missed 1 day but lets say 13/14 days) and I notice that I can play the barres 90% of the time.. I'm on 104x2 bpm (2 picks per click), the soloing is going quite nicely, also learned a new song with open chords + Fchord and switched the G chord for a G barre chord.
I really hate the note reading, I only do it because its important I guess, but thats coming along nicely aswell.

I am struggling a bit with the rhythm though, im trying to count/tap while strumming, without I can do it somehow easily on several chord sequences..
If I do it REALLY slow I can do it, guess I gotta build it up..

Also I took 4 weeks for foundation 1 and somehow im almost at the ending of foundation 2 in 2 weeks.. is that normal?

Sometimes things go faster than you think they would. I remember going through the Beginner's Course really fast until the part with the F chord. That part took me at least a week.

Then the next stage went by relatively quickly because I had already learned the minor pentatonic scale earlier and dabbled in power chords.

Rhythm guitar comes very naturally to me and I'm already familiar with the major scale because I started working on that particular DVD earlier. So stage 1 is relatively easy. Barre chords are probably going to give me trouble, though (not the regular E shape ones, but the others). And then there's the notes... There's a few I can name instantly in the first five frets, and I know all on the 6th string. But other than that I have to work from the ones I know and use the note circle to actually get at them.

Just make sure you're really comfortable with everything in a given stage before moving on.

Questions...
Will there be more advanced courses in the future?

OK so I thought I'd been through all the I Minute Changes debate during the BC but just came upon another 1MC curve ball in the IM2 Goals  :(

So Justin is now using some new 1MC terminology stating "Get your one minute changes between most barre chords and open chords to about 20 change cycles a minute."

So is a cycle Barre to Open and counts as one ? Meaning the target at this stage is 40 BC changes a minute where Barre to Open = 2 or should I just crack on as fast as I can and not worry about the counts ?

No rush for answers as play time still limited for the next 2 weeks  >:( But it is coz the family's still here  ;D

Toby Don't worry about what Justin says for the one minute changes. Just keep doing whatever
you where doing before. If you've been counting each chord as a change keep doing that. You'll
eventually get up to 100 + a minute so it really doesn't matter if you count 20 or 40 just as long
as you are seeing improvement.  8) and making clean changes as fast as you can.

Thx Stitch

I'm sticking to slow, methodical and clean(ish) for now while times short, I'll bear you advice in mind when I get back to normal practice and start ramping the speed up. Mind you that programmed metronome tip you gave me way back when has always been a great help on the 1MCs  ;D

Cheers

Been going over the IM2 Goals, as I feel ready to move on to IM3. I meet all the criteria, apart from accenting 16th. I'm fine with 16th strumming and accenting the count and foot tap. Where it all goes wrong, is tapping my foot when attempting RUST 27 (1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a ). I'm fine with the pattern when just counting - same with RUST 25 & 26 as well - but it all falls apart after a few cycles when I'm keeping time with my feet. Not sure if I'm complicating things by having a metronome playing as well. But I can't even consider changing chords at the moment.

• Play the new 16th note accent rhythm pattern and apply it to a chord sequence (one you are confident with, can be open chords or a song that you know already).

So do I ease into IM3 while working on this or focus on the pattern until I get it consistently right while foot taping. Really unsure, as I don't want to do what I did with BC6 and stay here for 6 months!!

Guidance appreciated.

Instead of a metronome, anyway you could get a simple bass snare beat going?  Might help with the groove having the two different sounds instead oF the dry click of a metronome.

For that particular rhythm I bob my head to the red accents D U D U D and my feet go on auto.

I also seem to recall in the way back I learned this by counting it as eights instead of sixteenths until I felt it.  That worked for me, but it could backfire.

Literally instead of saying '1 e an a...' I just said '1 and 2 and...' instead.  Just the changed the words.  Til I felt it then changed the words back

ONE and two AND three and FOUR and one AND two and THREE and four and... would be one measure.

Thanks Shadow I'll give those a try. Justin also suggests 123 123 123 1234 accenting the 1s, gets the groove but don't help the feet! Tried it with some chords this evening - just D to A back and forth (KISS) and that seemed to help a little with the feel, plus playing real slow makes it hard to feel for me, if you get what I mean.

Will probably spend another week, just doing IM2 stuff alongside this and take a view of introducing the IM3 modules alongside very slowly but we'll see  8)

In case it helps, this gets used a lot in old school metal.  Each accent is the chord with two muted pedals on the low or E or A between... seems to me that is what I was doing when I picked up this rhythm back in the early 80s... Dio or Ozzy or something...

Shadow

That may do ! The way you explained that made me think of some of the tab in my Iron Maiden song books. I'm sure there a few tracks with that kinda feel. Sort of a power chord followed root x 2 with the v muted ?
Like eh
5xx5xx5xx5xxx ! 7xx7xx7xx7xxx
333333333333 ! 555555555555   ??

Not sure if they were alt picking/strumming though.

A riff in Run To The Hills springs to mind. So I'll dig them out tomorrow and see what's what. When Justin plays it at 'speed' in the video the rhythm immediately stands out but not so much when its played at 50bpm, my current max, almost with feet  >:(

Be careful with Maiden.  They tend to do the gallop thing.

1 (e) an a 2 (e) an a 3 (e) an a 4 (e) an a.

Which, while cool, isn't what you are after.

@Close - thx for the advice. Going to stick with it for another week and take Justin's advice of dropping the foot taps for now. Reckon once I get to a reasonable tempo or find a song with this pattern (any ideas folks?), I'll find the tapping easier. However I know the A shape barre is going to be tough for me, so I'll ease into IM3 with that! However I'm playing catch up on ear training from the BC and know I need to do those JUSTIN modules as well :(

@Shadow - Found some similar accents in those early Maiden songs but not quite the same. But interesting looking back at their pre '90s tracks and realizing that once I get that Barre A sorted I'll finally be able to play some of them old uns  ;D So thanks for the help  8)
