One of Us and Mad World (fingerpicking)
« on: October 25, 2010, 11:18:41 pm »
Recorded these two songs out tonight after work. I decided the quicker the better after I was playing it really well with beautiful dynamics earlier in the night, but take after take after take wore me down til the versions I had were worse than the earlier ones ???

Its annoying, but its still early days.  I learned these arrangements from a guy called Ulli whose tabs I found online.   Mad World only took a couple of hours last weekend, and One of Us was this weekend.  I think I should stop learning more and more songs and focus on what I've got so far (about 10 or more fingerpicking).

Your guitar playing sounds beautiful! I really enjoy listening to your recordings!
May I ask how long you have been playing? Do you play a nylon stringed guitar?

only a few sloppy fingerings here and there but it's great.
might give mad world a shot too.

if you like this, you might like "song for guy" by elton john (it sounds cool on guitar too)

I've been playing 2.5 years, anywhere from 6 to 20 hours a week.  I've not been focused on finger picking long though, I caught the bug playing Anybody Out There from Pink Floyd the Wall.  Last night I was playing these songs so smooth and fluid and beautiful, but small mistakes annoyed me and I kept rerecording.  I'm happy with the sound after so short a period, I've so many to rotate now its getting difficult to pick :)

The guitar is a steel string Crafter Moonlight, its on my flickr page:

I like using the capo for finger picking as it evens out volume from the open strings.  Its also easier to play since I've spent the last year or so playing a baby Taylor guitar I bought in Vegas lol.

@Lieven Thanks mate, appreciate it.  I'll rerecord in a month or so when the songs really sunk in and I can concentrate more on the nuances I've intentionally left out and the dynamics.  I'll give that song a listen and see if it tickles my fancy :)

Your guitar doesn't only sound great it looks very beautiful as well!
Didn't you practice some of those Disney songs? Is there any more to come?

cool songs, I love mad world, I learnt a picking version of this that still required singing to get the melody over :pI really like the acoustic arrangments that people do. so clever.

Nice work, Kroikey.
Like DC, i love hearing some of these acoustic arrangements that put the melody into the guitar and make it sound like you have with those two.

Keep them coming mate.

I like these melodic pickings. Nicely played!
Good to hear that you´re learning this tunes within a couple of hours. Keep practicing the songs you know but don´t stop to learn more songs. If the arrangements are in a similar style you practice this style by learning new song.

Where do you place the capo?

I've been placing the capo anywhere I like depending on my mood or the previous song.  I've been weening myself off from using the seventh fret because its doing nothing to stretch my hands, so I tend to put it on 2nd or 4th.

I've took the words of encouragement to plough on and have added some of the nuances and the solo, it'll be a while because its all fast HO/PO runs and I chickened out of practising scales other than maybe Em and G lol.  I think I'd rather it was a natural thing than intellectual.

It seems I have to catch a good day and a good nail size and it all suddenly clicks.  Hopefully I do the song some justice when I repost :)

thanks man! :D

now i see it's the same version that sungha jung plays, i might give it a shot as a side project :) do you use the thumb-pick or it's not really neccessary?
