Guitar to Mac cable

I understand I can connect my guitar to Garageband using the computer's usb or phono ports. What are the pros and cons of each? I'll only be using it for recording my practicing (I'm a beginner), and to play with sounds a bit as I don't have an amp. Thanks.

You should actually get a cable that connects from your line in to your guitar.
You'll need a plug with 1/4" on one end and  1/8" on the other.

Also, you should get a decent amp modeling software if you want an okay sound.

USB:

Pro's: Better sound quality, more software available.
Con's: Sometimes there's a delay, Expensive.

Cable:

Pro's: Affordable, easy to use.
Con's: Less sound quality then a USB, Noisy.
