Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum is on special offer at Amazon (UK) at the moment (half price until this Sunday) so I thought I would give the trial version a go to see if it is any good.

What I want to do is import a backing track into Vegas (which I have done) then capture video from a webcam while playing back the backing track.  I can capture the video OK, but I can't do this while playing back the audio track.  Does anybody know how to do that (or even if it is possible)?  I was hoping that I could avoid the usual problems of trying to sync video and audio.

It doesn't work that way.

It's intended that you record you video on a camera. Then Vegas has a capture utility that gets it to the PC.

For instance....

Record to DV tape.
Capture to PC
Load into Vegas on a video track.

If you have windows, check for a product called Windows Movie Maker.  It's a free windows app that will let you record video and sound then merge them to create a new video.

Not sure if that is what you are after.

@TB-AV

OK.  I just wanted to make sure there wasn't an easier way.

@WrexTheDragon

I have used Windows Movie Maker before.  Vegas has some extra features which may be useful such as picture-in-picture and it will import *.mov files (which my Nikon camera produces), but I am not sure if it is worth it (even at half price) as I don't produce videos very often.

I use Windows Movie Maker in Vista as it is nice and simple.

I can add effect and transitions, text and titles, import my Nikon videos (but they are *.avi) and add a sound tracks and sync them with the move and change volume.

Yes it does not do any clever stuff like picture in picture.

Man, my brain is not working today....

Anyway.... here's how you do it in Vegas....but I don't know any app that will multitrack video like you do with audio in real time.

I managed to capture video as shown in the YouTube clip, but that isn't what I wanted to do.

Yeah, I know. I don't think you can do what you want. You want multitrack  audio/video playback/record.

Be sure to set your projects to 16/48K. That's teh video camera standard.

On your audio track have a count-in Click click click. Your camera should pick that up as well. You should be able to then simply align those first clicks and be good to go.

Most people have enough problem with latency just running audio much less trying to play back audio and capture/sync live video as well.

It sounds to me like you want to play a backing track and record the video of you playing along to it at the same time.

You can do this, but not the way you're thinking.

Basically all you need to do is play the backing track with Media Player.  Set Vegas recording while you do your bit.  That will result in your video and guitar audio being captured to the Vegas time line.

Now add the backing track to Vegas as a separate audio track on the time line and viola, you have all of the elements playing back together.

Have you actually done that in Vegas?

No I haven't done this personally.

But the theory should be sound.  I'm not suggesting the audio from the backing track will be captured by vegas during this process (hence the need to import it after), but both applications should be able to access the sound card simultaneously.
