Zoom Q3 Video/Audio Recorder
« on: December 03, 2009, 02:08:08 am »
Hi all - I searched the forum but couldn't find any reference to this.

As it is essentially a video cam with a mic on steroids I've posted it here - has anyone had any experience with one of these?

Turns out I misnamed the title of this thread - the manufacturer of the Q3 is Zoom - Samson are just the US distributers (mods feel free to edit the title).

There is a fair bit on youtube and lots of actual recordings to evaluate - anyone interested here is a good place to start http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0bZaeb3V6E&feature=fvw

I must have been a good Bootstrap because Santa has agreed to bring me one for Christmas - youtube may never quite be the same ;D

Hope to do a review and post some vids of me playing in the New Year.

And... results??

I'm looking at a Mino HD mkII, seems to be most recommended... but what you think of this Zoom then?

It suits my purpose i.e. I use it as a practice tool to check out my form & sound.

Some positive observations:

Relatively compact & robust
Uses AA batteries (no fidely chargers and on lithiums you get a good few hours)
Shooting video is very easy (good ergonomics and intuitive menus etc)
The onboard editing software is simple to use but very basic i.e. you can cut out a section and re-save and that is about it - for anything more complex you would need to import it into some 3rd party software
I've never uploaded to YouTube but the onboard software looks simple to use
Lots of sound quality options
2.4" screen is more than adequate
640 x 480 at 30fps is adequate
2GB card is heaps for what I want it for
Onboard USB cable means never having to find a cable to connect to PC
Can use supplied cable to plug straight into the tele

Other observations:

Onboard speaker is mono and sounds aweful (I'm talking seriously ugly) - however it does have a line out stereo jack though and through earphones sounds awesome
It comes with bugger-all instructions and knowing nothing about mics I've not yet worked out how to make the optimal use of the 2 directional condenser mics (this is a me issue not a camera issue)
96khz sampling is sound only (no video capture)
The 2x digital zoom is the real draw back on this camera - you really can't get close to the action being only 2x - and of course if you use it you degrade the image.

Summary

Even with my bogan ears I can really can tell the difference in sound quality on this thing compared to a bog standard video cam. Good for practice sessions or for YouTube/blogging on the go e.g. when travelling.

What you see is what you get - a mobile stereo sound recorder combined with a very, very limited video camera.

If it is fit to the purpose you want it for then I think it also represents reasonable value for money IMO.

Hope that helps - happy to answer any questions if I can.

Cheers, Boots
