IronGear 'Hot Slag' pickups.... First Impressions.
« on: November 24, 2009, 04:30:10 pm »
Okay........ Had a Bridge and neck set delivered yesterday and fitted them to my RG while at the same time changing the strings. I did the soldering work today; Had a little bother with the coil splitting, but a few minutes with a multimeter and a bit of wire swapping had it sorted in short order.

I switched the amp on with exactly the same settings that I used the night before with the old pickups: A set of Ibanez V7 and V8 humbuckers, with an S1 single coil (which was left on the guitar). At first I thought 'not bad'; definitely more output, certainly more balls than the last set and a lot more clarity right across the range from lows to highs. But then I never bought these to play the blues with; I'm loving the sound of the Agile too much for that.

So I wound the gain on my amp up to about 7....... and that's where the fun started. Splitting the HB coils with the single coil brings an interesting little mix of sounds that I'm sure I'll play about with later, but the full bridge and neck humbuckers are a vicious little pair of bastards with a bit of gain . These little buggers are just dying to squeal on me; I can feel it anytime my fingers go anywhere near the strings as I'm playing. Not in a silly way either; the harmonics and nuances of the strings have come alive.

This isn't much of a review, I know, but I thought I'd just mention my first impressions.

Oh....... and I might add....... both pups, delivered......... £52.15.

Try getting a set of DiMarzio's for that. Can't say I'm not happy so far with my latest random purchase  ;D

The title of this thread led me to think you were going out on the pull. I was going to respond that you'll never find a hot slag. Unless she's just got out the horizontal position of the back seat of a ford escort with no air conditioning.  ;D
