Welcome to the forum :)

Not a bad first post recording, well played. Sounded far better than when I impov, nice phrases and timing. 8)

Thanks  :)

I have been playing on and off for over 20 years. Quite a lot of that has been off due to work and family commitments etc. Have been trying to play for at least 30 mins a day for the last couple of weeks.

As I said I have never really shared anything in public before. I now figure by sharing recordings I can get feedback that will help me improve.

Just recording your own stuff can be an eye opener to where you're at. Been dicking around for 19 years myself, mainly noodling the odd riff, lick intro but got focused a couple of years back after retiring and then the last 2 and a bit years with Justin and feel I'm finally making progress.

Certainly sharing your playing here will give you good feed back. If you want warts and all drop something into the Music Critique section

You'll get more specific guidance in this thread 8)

BTW How're the Chipmunks ;D

The chipmunks are doing well :)

I might pop that link onto the other part of the forum and see what people say. Part of my brain wants to go and think it through and re-record it though :) But seeing as this is an exercise in just laying stuff out warts and all I must resist.

Bump ... to coincide with the last date for entry in to the October 2017 competition.

You may want to post updates in here or simply listen back to old & dusty improvs from the archives.

Had some fun playing my acoustic guitar over this track today. Couldn't quite get some of the bends though. And it's interesting listening back how I hear far better places where the music could have gone. And also not much in the way of repeating patterns! But one more step along the way ...

Keep playing :)

Sounded blue and true to me, Mari. You sure are getting the hang of this.

I thought you tracked the chord changes pretty well and enjoyed the turnarounds.

Good progress!

Good effort, Mari. I can relate to what you said about listening back and hearing where you could have gone with it. I do that constantly. I’m still hearing all kinds of things I could have played in Carol of the Bells. Use it to your advantage. I think it’s part of the growth process.  You’ve got a good start.

Thought I'd have another go at this one.  When this track was used in the Oct contest last year I downloaded it and thought I'd give it a go.  Didn't have a clue, so gave that idea up.  Still not sounding as bluesy as I'd like but at least could have a go :)

I have decided, post session with Justin, to focus my learning on the finger-style playing while working on the first steps of the IM.  Consciously opted against getting into blues lead for now, where I am sure I would discover and develop what I need to start playing more bluesy licks.

But it was fun.  Unlike my helter skelter (excuse a Beatles pun) run at the last challenge, I tried to play less, allow phrases to stand more apart with some notes held longer.  I can see in my DAW that often I am just ahead of the beat.  And I think I made my run for the 10th fret prematurely.

That aside, it was fun and will keep this up, just for the simple fun of it, without worrying too much :)

Hope you enjoy it ... oh and it is stripped down to just over a minute, rather than that 7 minute epic in the last challenge :)

I’m getting a blues vibe here David, nicely done. I think you’ve got all good notes, and I especially liked the ending - the descending notes, not that it was over lol. I agree that you’re playing ahead of the beat sometimes, but hearing that yourself is what will help you stay on the beat (except when you’re intentionally off) with practice.

Great job on these challenges, David, I’m enjoying hearing your progression.

Good stuff David - well done for revisiting these old challenges too.

ps
I agree - 7 minutes is way too long except for personal practice.
Hopefully, future challenges will be more modest … 1-3 minutes.
