@pingu:
Youtube won't let me reply to your comment for some reason so the answer to your question is...

:-) The pick-up is a Seymour Duncan Woody SC that fits into any acoustic with a standardish size sound hole.

The sides of it are rubberised which creates the tension needed to hold it in place and also makes it really easy to insert/remove at any time.

@agordon
Hope it doesn't disappoint then!

Ive only just picked up on this, been on holiday. I've never really played this song even though I'm a Dylan fan. Its one of those songs that needs singing ::) or a lead thrown in, anyone got a simple lead tab to break it up a little. Im getting round to watching all the videos, like what I've seenso far.

DeadlyChicken I just saw your rendition of GNR's Knockin' on Heavens Door and it was incredible.  Your bends are amazing and they are spot on.  Just had to tell you what a great job you did!

Nice.
Makes me want to learn this one and record a cover of it simply from listening to this one.
Thanks for the inspiration mate.

@ marcus

now you've got a wicked Slash tone going and a mic to record through, how about you get this backing track and give this one a go

OK, about time I did this challenge...been uncertain of it since so many others did great performances with singing and everything...which i couldnt do to save my life  ::) well, here it is:
Knocking on heavens door jam

I played clean rhythm guitar and Distortion rhythm and solo. I hope it turned out okay, its 01:39 here now, wich means that last impro solo was recorded about 01:30..I hope its good when I wake up tomorrow...

I tried to be "slashy" on this one because its kinda the gnr version I did, but i still tried to come up with my own licks. I did some slide guitar too, but with my mobile phone since my ipod wasnt there at the moment...so thats part of why that sounds a little sketchy.
and its kinda hard to be interesting over the same 3 chords forever. but its good to practice major scales too!

Also thought I'd put a rendition up.... bit dylan, bit g'n'r, little of my own added flavour. only clean with a touch of reverb, shortened solo at the end. Also something of a departure for me, it's a video :o....

Need to balance the amp mic and vocal mic volume better.

Nice versions all round.... hoping to hear more of you exercising those vocal pipes

good stuff, Tourniquet. enjoyed it!

..but it must be time for a new challenge now, soon?? Maybe that other free jam track from justin, or sweet home alabama (good for both singing and soloing for those who cant sing...at all..like me..), or maybe a christmas song, like jingle bell rock or something, since christmas is coming...

Yep, liked both, too. Very different approaches, which is just what's cool about these challenges.

Hello,

This is my recording of me strumming over a backing track and trying to play with the chords as explained in Justin's video.

Good effort Gi11es, sounds like you've got the chord changes coming along nice & clean ... well done for leaping in ...  8)
This is a late reply - you'll be even better by now I would think - can you sing & plat together on this yet?

Hi there,

I recently suffered a severe, fantasy inspired, GAS attack. This recording is a first attempt using all my new toys. I wasn't planning to share this when I started but I think it is adequate to share for some feedback.

The fantasy ... to one day, some day, play a live gig, one level up from the Open Mics. If I dream big then perhaps a coffee shop. And in doing so I wanted to be able to produce a sound similar to what I produce for usual AVOYP recording the guitar DI and a mic, then adding Fx, blending the two etc. And well I know gear doesn't make one a better player, but still I succumbed to the fantasy-induced fever.

The audio here was recorded though a TC Helicon Play Acoustic pedal, using an AKG D5 mic.  The intention in using the Play Acoustic is to get a guitar sound that is closer to a mic'ed acoustic with some light fx and adding some fx to the vocal. The D5 is a super-cardiod, so hoped it would help with the bleed.

The Play Acoustic was connected up to my AI as usual. But rather than running into Reaper, as usual, the AI was used as the audio source to record in Corel VideoStudio. And rather than using my phone to record the video, a webcam also running straight into VideoStudio.

As I say, this is literally a first go and there are some issues to overcome, such as focus, getting the resolution right and lifting the audio volume to be closer to the YT norm. Also probably some more tweaking on the use of the Play Acoustic fxs.

And it is a whole lot easier to produce this way than all the steps I usually go through to make a video.  Can't say that justifies the GAS attack but what the heck, right ...

As always, I hope you enjoy and would appreciate comments on the audio ... tone, levels, anything really.

@DavidP

Sounded pretty good to me David, listening to it on decent bins and on my newly acquired Harman Cardon equipped Tablet (a 4 speaker system)! Tonality was nice and rich and the mix was fine to me - great stuff!

@DavidP
Hi David,
Found your version of Knockin to be interesting. Liked the arrangement as to me it was well done. Vocals seemed pretty good. Guitar play was good and with a pick I believe. You seemed to get a lot of mileage out of that and the strumming pattern. I am working this song at present but it is nowhere near what you have going here.

I did find the volume down a bit and had to turn it up. I compared your offering in level to a couple other YT songs/performances at random and that bore out what I found, lower level on yours. Mix seemed good. I don't know what bleed you had into the mic. I do know that if perhaps you try moving closer to the dynamic, you should have less bleed. I think from what I could see you were about a foot or 12" (1/3 of a meter?), back from the mic. I see a lot of folks that perform live, literally eat the dynamic mic. You probably don't have to get that close. But to me I would favor that over where you're at now, at least in attempt.

All in all a fine effort and the equipment paid off in my book, while having potential to do much more. Good stuff, looking for more and keep up the rockin vibe!

Thanks Darrell.  Good to hear the tone and mix is sounding good.

Thanks LBro.  Appreciate the encouragement and detailed feedback.

Yup, playing with a pick. Trying to be a little lighter on the strumming, seems to get a better tone though am still catching strings a bit heavy every now and then which then causes the pick to move awkwardly.

On the level, agreed.  Hit "Stats for Nerds" and it was about 9dB soft. I had an option to boost the volume level in VideoStudio but just left it at the recorded level.  I wanted to see what that would be once rendered and uploaded into YT.  Next time will push it up, trial and error till I get the sweet spot.

I think the bleed issue is resolved, or if there was bleed then it didn't do any harm in this recording.  I'd have to record into Reaper and listen to just the vocal track to know for sure.  But that's moot, since going forward I will be using Reaper for multi-tracks and this approach for the live, record in one take, thing.

I'm a metric system man but good with imperial feet and inches, so maybe a little under 12".  Reason why I am backed off, rather than mic-eating is two-fold: firstly, wanting to avoid proximity effect.  Am I missing something when using a dynamic mic, that it is not relevant; secondly, I was trying to avoid some of the heavier breath-taking that I didn't like in my last live set of three songs.

That all said, I will try get up a little closer next time round.  Usually I'd be standing and that will also change the interaction with the mic, more freedom.

But all in all, good to hear the mix was sounding good, which was the main aim of this one.  And it was a relief to get the kind of results I was hoping for when I gave in to the GAS pressure.

And I think the tone of my voice (for what it is worth) sounded good with the new mic; so thanks for the nudge on that choice.
