just had an idea after going thru some of my lessons.

what about a 'youtube' challenge/exercise thing

where we each play/learn the same song and upload them to our channels.

I think it might be fun and rewarding to see each other playing the same song.
Could be a cool way of getting advice and of seeing other peeps style on the songs.

What do you think ?

For a starting song i had maybe ' Knocking on Heaven's Door' as a good starter.

Anyone have any thoughts ?
 ???

i had my guitar ( Takamine TAN 77 with cool tube pickup ) plugged into my Zoom H4 ( acting as audio interface ), this was plugged into my iMac.
I recorded the video of me playing rhythm with iMovie 09.
I then opened up Garageband 09 and recorded myself playing a lead track whilst listening to my rhythm track.
I then dragged the lead track into iMovie, and tried to sync it up so it was playing in time.
Still learning all this software.

Where did you learn the lead guitar? I'd quite like to try it because strumming chords for 2 1/2 minutes can get a bit boring ;D

I don't have a lot of spare time lately so dunno if I can get in on this one, I did upload a sort of cover of the solo from Guns and Roses version of this.  It was more a test of my Wah pedal when it was new than anything else but it sounded mostly ok other than the end ;p

I was considering doing a lesson on this and the other solo in that song when I get some time

Thanks ;) yeah it is pretty much G major, or E minor pentatonic or a mix :p  I don't have a tab for it, but I could probably knock one up, but I would kinda like to have a crack at a lesson on this and the intro solo as I think its a good learner and I think it could  help some folk.

Good covers so far by everyone in my opinion.  Yeah, we can all improve on areas, but there is some good talent here.

I really like DC's videos of the GNR solos.  I learned them both a while back just from his videos, but would need to re-learn them.  If anyone wants to learn these solo's, his videos are perfect for that.

Ok, I finally had time to record my cover of knockin on heavens door.  Here it is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfMe9Wmq1EY

Beware, singing is included  :D.  Gosh its hard to sing and play at the same time.  Feedback (positive and negative) is always welcome.  I may try to do an electric guitar version later if I have time.

I also posted another cover just because I was in the mood.  Its mainly for my wife.  Uploading now.  Beware singing is worse than the one above.  ???

My vote goes to close2u for the best one so far.  That was a good job after only spending a couple of hours on it.

agj - not a true quo version.  You used more than 3 chords!  ;D  I like it anyway.

It was just for a laugh, I'd had a few beers, I think possibly I should have turned the gain down a bit.  Next mmmm how would the Sex Pistols do it. ;D ;D ;D

Very kind - thank you!   :)

I wasn't going to do this - I've known the basic chords and played it on acoustic for years.  Anyway, I had a rant at someone posting a request for this in the 'song requests' thread ... given that Justin has already done a lesson on it!

I thought I'd better 'put up or shut up' so I then followed the links I posted for that person to learn the Guns N' Roses version myself.

The 'couple of hours' were mainly spent learning the solo, figuring out a reasonable amp setting for the different parts and then getting the timing right to the backing track (including switching between pickup positions and adjusting tone, volume etc as I don't have any pedals).

I'm glad you like it and appreciate your positive feedback!!

 :)

I think yours is the best so far, apart from mine :D :D :D no seriously definatly the best, you beat me to it, I was going to base mine loosely arround the G'n'R version with the solo but this being easter holidays I had no time to practice because my daughter is off school and being a huge pain in the xx--xx.

Wow it's taken me so long to have a crack at KOHD that this topic had slipped off of the first page!!!
I finally managed to have a quick go as I was running out the door to the  office this morning!

I tried to make this a little more interesting by experimenting with an offbeat style strumming pattern and I translated/improvised the small solo part from the legendary Guns and Roses version so that it was playable on the acoustic.

Hope you like it.

PS:  I was singing, but there's no way that was making it into the cut!  :D

that's a good job tigger (the vid ... not the fact that you're not singing!)

I like the solo done on acoustic

how did you record this so you can fade the vidoe and sound?

Thanks close.

I use Final Cut Pro (because I have access at work) to edit my vids and it's really easy to add a fade out using that.

However this kind of thing can be done easily in most edit software - Windows Movie Maker for example.  Just have a look in the transistions section.

are you just picking any strings ?
I have a few picking patterns that I typically follow, but I also tend to vary the strings and when I pick them based on the song.  Actually Justin's Solo Blues DVD set really helped me alot with the picking style playing.  It taught me to use more than just my thumb and index fingers.

Tigger, cant wait to see your vide when I get home from work.
