Question on this strumming as taught by Justin in the video vs the songbook.

When I get to the 2/4 bar which would be the D and then E chord, Justin shows two
down strums for the D Chord, and yet even though the book shows a 2/4<bar in front of the
succeeding E chord> he appears to do a full strumming pattern followed by the full strum for the next
E chord.  Is this the correct method?

Thanks

When I get to the 2/4 bar which would be the D and then E chord, Justin shows two
down strums for the D Chord

The 2/4 bar means that there are only 2 beats in that bar, hence 2 down strums on the D chord in that bar. That is the whole bar and it is shorter than all the other bars. When you switch to the E chord you are back to 4/4 bars and the regular strumming pattern. That is why the 2/4 bar is noted then the 4/4 bar is noted when you switch back.

It is:

G-4 beats (1 bar in 4/4)
C-8 beats (2 bars in 4/4)
D 2 beats (1 bar in 2/4)
E-8 beats (2 bars in 4/4)

It totals 22 beats, which is not a multiple of 4, hence the need for the 2/4 bar.

Thanks for the info.  That is what I had originally thought.  It was what is printed
in the songbook that had me confused because they have 2 half bars |D  |E followed by a single full
E printed.

I have the first version of the songbook, I don't see that so maybe someone with the second versiion can answer with a little more knowledge (if it is in fact different), but based on what you have posted, this is what I see.

The |D | you posted looks like the 2/4 bar of D.  The E starts a new bar, there is nothing saying it is a 2/4 bar, at least not in what you have posted.

So it looks like to me if the chords are shown as |D | E         E       , as I think you are saying, then it is 2/4 on the D, then back to 4/4 on the E, which is how it should be.

Chord songbooks have limitations. You generally need to listen to the song to know how it should sound. The extra information Justin gives in the Tips and strumming patterns are great. Once your experience grows, they will come more naturally. The video lessons, even the older ones made before the songbooks were published, are invaluable.
