Hello everyone and hope you are all feeling awesome, i'm meg i'm 25, live with friends have a job and i am a returning guitar player after a somewhat longish hiatus for 2 or 3 years, i played guitar for maybe a 1-2 years and made good progress to satisfy myself at the time, thanks to self learning as well as using Justins website from which i was part of the forums but it was so long ago i forgot my account woops!!

I'm into but not exclusively Rock/pop/metal/WeirdJapaneseMusicAlongTheSameGenres and whatever else inbetween that i end up liking listening to or just playing for fun.

Just got the spark this week to get back into guitar and be a little more motivated to keep up with it, thankfully allot of my muscle memory and most if not all the basics and intermediate skills i learn are mostly intact aside from theory which has totally gone down the drain. (Sorry Justin!)

Thought id say hi and hopefully get advice and maybe give it down in the future, also be something to keep my motivation going which is the biggest hurdle i believe.

So thanks for reading and rock on duder and duddeters!

Let me tell you a story.

Earlier this year I passed my 70th birthday and for a long time I’ve wanted to play the guitar but never did anything about it. This time though, as there can’t be all that many birthdays left I did.

We were away from home and I was just browsing in a small guitar shop (the shop that is, not the guitars!) whilst the boss of the household bought yet another pair of shoes in the shop next door. I spent nearly an hour talking to the owner and he let me have a “plonk” on some guitars until I said “I’m going to buy one”. He advised me that at my age there was no point in my spending mega bucks because I might find I didn’t like it and give up fairly quickly. He also advised that nylon strings would be a lot easier than steel on my aged fingers and if I did take to it that would be the time to spend a bit more.
So, I left the shop clutching a Jose Ferrer, nylon strung, classical style guitar complete with a set of on-line lessons. I didn’t know it then, but I do now that it also had a neck as wide as Blackpool Prom and an action so high I’d need a step ladder to play it.

Regardless, I made a start on the lessons, some were good, some were not so good and I rapidly learned the names and positions of all the notes on the first four frets (and a few others too). I then went on to plonk my way through Kumbaya, Michael Row the Boat Ashore, Swing Low Sweet Chariot and a few others too note perfect if a bit slower than they were written. Then, it came to Chords!!

This was the time I discovered Justin and the Beginner’s Course. I now find that my repertoire includes A,D and E with the various minor, 7th and sus2 variations. On a good day and nice and slowly they ring out clear and on a bad day they buzz more than a hive of bees. I struggle daily withC to force my ring finger away from my middle finger and equally so with G to get my ring finger to bend perpendicular to the high E string. No matter, I’ll crack them one day regardless of my less than supple fingers and small hands and then I’ll have a go at F!

On bad days I give my left hand a rest and move on to the basic finger picking section and give my right hand something to do or I practice a few simple strumming patterns and open Justin’s Beginner’s Song Book I’ve just bought-and then it’s back to one minute changes again.
Why am I putting myself through this after all I’m not going to play in a band, just for my own interest and amusement. Where would I find a band my age anyway--- Oh! Forgot The Stones!). Well I’ve always been into music of all kinds especially guitar based stuff. I’ve seen EC at The Royal Albert Hall six times plus once in Birmingham; got most of the stuff Richard Thompson has issued; like David Rawlings a lot, Dylan, Decemberists, Alabama Shakes, Paul Carrack and on and on……..

The other thing is I think I owe it to Justin to get better too. I look at his on-screen image sometimes and say to him “Keep going son, there’s light at the end of the tunnel”. THAT BOY IS SOME TEACHER.

Now I'm waiting for delivery of my Yamaha FG700s, then watch me go.

Habitat: Split, Croatia

Which guitar do you currently play on? Yamaha Pacifica 112

Which amp(s) do you own? Johnson small one

How long have you been playing guitar? Doing justin begginer course for 2 months (4 months before i started but it was unmethodica and confused approach)

Which is/are your favorite music genre(s)? Blues, Folk, Country, Rock

Which genre do you play on your guitar often? Only justin beginner stuff, I adore 12 bar blues and fingerstyle (3 fingers instead of 4)

Who are your favorite bands? Dire Straits, J.J. Cale, Prljavo Kazalište

What inspired you to start playing guitar? Riding on a bus sitting tired (18 years old) and hearing Sultans of Swing live version on my Ipod, and Tunnel of Love after that. That changed my life... I doubted myself and had no money for guitar then but that was key moment.I got acoustic guitar but had no clue what to do with it, my teacher was not bad but he left country and I was left clueless so I sold my guitar and quit.  Later me and my exgirlfriend lied in bed talking about blues and 60/70 bands and I realized: this is what I really want to do, I am gonna save for guitar and start again seriously!

Do you play in a band or have you been playing in a band? No, I am still on beginner road.

Why do you play guitar? I love being creative and I like listening guitar so that combined is pure love. I don't really care about being cool, and other people seing me as good. I just want to be able to express myself.

What are your goals for the future? To be able to express my deepest feelings through playing guitar.

Hello,

My name is Pieter and I play the guitar for about 5 years now. What I mainly do is just improvising.

I have two guitars: a Fender Stratocaster and a Epiphone Les Paul Standard. I love the sound and feel of the stratocaster the most.

I have long thought that I could become as good as Jimi Hendrix if I practiced enough, but I don't think that anymore. lol :-)

I hope to find some interesting tips on this forum.

Thanks already!

Pieter

I've already posted here a few years ago but things have changed since then so I thought I should update my presentation.

Nickname: guitar_noob
Real (full) name: Aurélien L.
Age and birthday: 30 years old
Habitat: South of France

Which guitar(s) do you own?
* MiM Fender Stratocaster (the Wayne's World2 edition). I call it Excalibur (because of Wayne's World ;)) or Galak / Galakaster because its color is the same than white chocolate  ;D (it used to be Arctic white 20 years ago)
* Hagstrom Super Swede. I call it Leslie because it's Lespol shaped ;). I don't use it very often even though I like it a lot. It's just that I'm used to my strat... Maybe I'll sell it soon.
* Taylor 214CE : my new guitar. Makes me wanna go acoustic more often !

Which guitar do you currently play on?
The strat in one band, and the Taylor in another.

Which amp(s) do you own?
A Fender Mustang II. Very versatile for my home playing. I'm quite happy with it.

For how long have you been playing guitar?
Started 5 years ago, but I've started playing seriously only 2 years ago I guess, when I started playing with other people.

Which is/are your favorite music genre(s)?
Depends on the mood. For the moment : mostly soul/funk/motown stuff. I used to listen a lot to rock and blues bands. 20s-30s jazz music is also great.

Which genre do you play on your guitar often?
Funk/soul + a bit of rock.
But again : depends on the mood and what I hear on the radio.

Who are your favorite bands?
I try to discover many artists that I don't know so I have quite a lot of band in my head right now.

I'd narrow the answer to guitarists that I like the most : John Frusciante, Prince, Nile Rodgers.

What inspired you to start playing guitar?
My wife bought me a guitar for my 25th birthday. At first, I was happy but soon got frustrated by the lack of progress. When I started playing with bands 2 years ago, my level skyrocketed and music has become a passion.

Serious hand injury last year made me lose a bit of interest in music... but I've recovered so here I am again !

Do you play in a band or have you been playing in a band?
Two bands :
- drum, kongas, trompet, saxo, piano, vocal, bass, and guitar. We play mostly funk/soul/reggae.
- cello, accordion, guitar. We play whatever we have in mind. We are working on Stairway to heaven right now ;).

Why do you play guitar?
Because I love it and I feel like it made me a better person. I've met so many people since I play music.

What are your goals for the future?
Mostly : to improve my skills at transcribing and reading music.

Do you play in a band or have you been playing in a band? I don't currently but did back in the late 80's. That was a very fun experience and I hope to do so again some day.

Why do you play guitar? Music moves me and mastering the guitar after playing keys for so long is my major bucket list item. One day I'll get it right! I've recently started over and began at square one with Justin's beginner lesson modules. Loving it now more than ever and making great strides.

What are your goals for the future? I'd really love to become a proficient intermediate guitarist within the next two years. I don't have any ideas or goals at making money with this but would love to have the skill necessary to do so, should the opportunity arise. I'd really love to investigate songwriting in the future.

Got close to some great bands back in the 70's as I was personal security for artists like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd. Saw and heard a lot but never felt the need to play myself.

I'm now 56 and the mid life crisis has kicked in, it was either a Harley or a Strat, well I'm here so you know who won. I live in South Oxfordshire in England and this time of year there are a lot of gigs both professional and turn up and join in going on in the area. My goal is to turn up and jam next year.

What are your goals for the future? To be able to pick up a guitar and play in front of people without having to think about what I'm doing. Ultimately I'd like to be a Clapton/SRV/Roben Ford/Joe Bonamassa clone, let's see what comes out the other side. 8)

Sometimes you want to give up the guitar, you'll hate the guitar.
But if you stick with it, you're gonna be rewarded. Jimi Hendrix
