Good evening everyone & thank you to Justin 👍

Ok well I have been taking lessons since October & feel like I have got no where so decided to look into Justin’s lesson to run along with mine....

I’m a total novice & at 40 feel a little lost with it all 😕 I have completed Justin’s level 1 & Started looking at the songs for beginners which started to loose me! Sould I leave the songs & continue with level 2 or try to get these songs down folks?

Habitat: Wales, UK

Which guitar(s) do you own?

Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus

Cheap steel-string acoustic of unknown age and origin

Which guitar do you currently play on?
Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus

Which amp(s) do you own?

Fender Champion 20
Fender Bassbreaker 007

For how long have you been playing guitar?

For about 3 months in the early ’80s, 6 months in the early ‘90s and coming up to 2 months recently.

Altogether, that’s almost a year, but it was very sporadic. I did pick up an acoustic and strum sometimes in between my more dedicated periods of commitment!

Which is/are your favorite music genre(s)?

Everything from country through metal, with a particular fondness for a bit of ‘80s goth.

Which genre do you play on your guitar often?

I love playing blues-based rock more than I enjoy listening to it. But there’s no one genre - a bit of Johnny Cash, a bit of The Cult, a dash of something heavier. I’m up for anything!

Who are your favorite bands?

Leonard Cohen, Ween, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Birthday Party, The Sisters of Mercy, Pavement, Pink Floyd, The Smiths, Big Country, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Christian Death, John Grant, PJ Harvey - countless others too.

What inspired you to start playing guitar?

To get to know the music I love better. And Rowland S Howard.

Do you play in a band or have you been playing in a band?

Nope, and I don’t imagine that I ever will. Once upon a time it would have been an ambition, but I’m a bit long in the tooth for that now. ;)

Why do you play guitar?

It sounds cheesy, but it gives me a sense of contentment - almost like a meditation. I feel like I can shut out the rest of the world when I have a guitar in my hand. I don’t know how to make very good use of the guitar yet, but it still helps!

What are your goals for the future?

To get an insight into some of my favourite songs. To have accomplished something that I can be proud of. To have fun and to enjoy music. Nothing much beyond that!

Hi guys, Eric here!

Nickname: Eric (boring right?)

Real (full) name: Eric

Age and birthday:40s

Habitat: London, England, surrounded by the detritus of my teenage boys

Which guitar(s) do you own? Second hand "Hondo" Gibson Hummingbird copy, hand-me-down from my Dad :-)

Which guitar do you currently play on? As above

Which genre do you play on your guitar often? Not there yet.

Who are your favorite bands? Guitar inspiration when I was young was Mark Knopfler / Dire Straits.

What inspired you to start playing guitar? Wanted a new challenge. Plus my son is now as good or better a trumpet player than me and I don't feel like competing with a teenager. So I gave him him my trumpet, and my Dad gave me his guitar. Which is kind'a nice, right?

Do you play in a band or have you been playing in a band? No (but have played trumpet in various bands in the past, and briefly flirted with bass guitar as a teenager)

Why do you play guitar? Personal pleasure.

What are your goals for the future? I want to be a really good guitar player :-) I see myself eventually working on finger picking / folk style and have an interest in writing guitar arrangements to obscure trad. folk songs.

Age: 26 years old

I previously played guitar from 2001 to 2011, which is when I severed my ulnar nerve and made only a very partial recovery, essentially leaving we with Django Reinhardt's injury. Starting yesterday, I am giving left-handed playing a go. I lost a big part of my life that day, and I recently decided that I'm going to get it back. Even as a confirmed right-hander, it can't be impossible to become a decent left-handed player, right? I purchased an Ibanez Starter Pack with a lefty dreadnought and found Justin's lessons to give me a structure to follow.

I played in a handful of bands years ago, and continued for a short time on keyboard and harmonica after my injury, but I never got very far with those instruments and haven't been a musician for four or five years at this point. I have no idea how much of an obstacle my right-handedness will turn out to be, so it's impossible to tell whether I'll be able to make it that far, but it would be a blast to be able to join the band in an open session again at some point. For now, playing guitar feels like I've had a stroke, so I'm excited to see what a month or two of learning can do about that.

I'm happy to have these lessons and community here to help me get back into it. Hope it works out, and thank you, Justin!

Cheers, Lefty.

Welcome aboard Lefty.

I wish you luck with your endeavours. I'm sure with the attitude you have you will succeed.

I'm a lefty who plays right handed and I have a good friend who is left handed but plays a standard right handed guitar upside down - blows my mind just to watch him!
Guitars - Ovation Celebrity, Revelation RJT60Q.

Which guitar(s) do you own?
Crafter Lite (acoustic); Faith Naked Venus (electro-acoustic)

Which guitar do you currently play on?
Both the above, more often the Faith

Which amp(s) do you own?
Blackstar

For how long have you been playing guitar?
Five months

Which is/are your favorite music genre(s)?
I love all sorts of music. The only limit is time to listen, not genre.

Which genre do you play on your guitar often?
Folk, country and pop mainly so far

Who are your favourite bands?
Barclay James Harvest, Caravan, Camel, Tom Paxton ie mostly 70s stuff. More recent stuff I like Paolo Nutini and Muse amongst others.

What inspired you to start playing guitar?
I love music, toyed with the piano for a few years, then saw a cheap DVD guitar course advertised, so bought that, then a guitar. The course was not so good, but I just loved the guitar. The chap at the shop recommended the JustinGuitar  course – what a great recommendation!

Do you play in a band or have you been playing in a band?
No.

Why do you play guitar?
Just love the sound.

What are your goals for the future?
To play songs that are recognisable to me and to enjoy myself.

Nickname:MJ
Real name: Marion
Age and birthday: A young lady over the age of forty never reveals her age.....you'd never guess I am THAT old...just the odd Cruella white stripes in my hair, and an evil cackle...

Habitat: South London

Which guitar(s) do you own?
2 beginners ones - a not very glam classical number from Lidl, and a shiny blue acoustic with metal strings.  I also own a Spongebob ukulele which was meant to have been for my children, but seems to have become adopted by me..somehow..

Which guitar do you currently play on?
All of the above, depending on which is easiest to manipulate given the new chords I am learning (the acoustic has strings which rise high above the arm neck bit (what's that called??)...makes it hard to play bar chords...

Which amp(s) do you own?
Just a very loud voice.  No amps yet...

For how long have you been playing guitar?
Since I bought the Lidl guitar several years ago.  I still can't play properly, just have almost mastered a few chords - oh and the song 'Three little birds' of course.  Have recently started to attend guitar classes properly now, supplemented with the odd bit of JustinGuitar, which I discovered just a few months ago too.

Which is/are your favorite music genre(s)?
Love a bit of funk (am trying and failing to get that funk strumming pattern...if I can practice hard now though maybe I will get it before I retire...Catholic in musical tastes otherwise: from classical through to soul, rap, rock and pop.  Feeling my age now as I discover I dislike lots of new pop and rap..give me some horrible 80's classics over that any day.

Which genre do you play on your guitar often?
Anything that is not too strenuous!!!  Have discovered I am replaying a lot of the music my father taught me when playing the piano e.g. Michael row the boat ashore!!  Just happy to get a tune played coherently and to be part of a bigger group playing.

Who are your favourite bands?
This has changed over time.  Some of the stuff I really liked when I was a twenty something now seems a little too sexist, full of profanity, violent, drug-orientated or over-sexed for me nowadays. (e.g. Snoop Dogg...or Eminen makes me blush nowadays.. ) Maybe this will change as I stop needing to protect my growing sons' morality. Just started to learn how to play bits of Get Lucky with my class.  Have been bouncing around to that anyway...and anything else from above genres assuming I don't cringe too much at anything too child-unfriendly.

What inspired you to start playing guitar?
My children.  I come from a musical family.  With a pianist dad and violinist-pianist mum, I learnt the basics of the piano and some violin, alongside doing stuff at primary school for music.  I used to fall asleep with my father practising for gigs in the living room downstairs, sometimes with busty brassy singers blasting out numbers like 'I just called to say I love you' by Stevie Wonder or 'Here comes the sun' by the Beatles.  Despite having forgotten much of the music I have learnt, I wanted to recreate some of this for my sons by encouraging them to do drumming at a local music centre and by having lots of musical instruments in the house for them to try.  The boys eventually dropped their drumming and it is me now having lessons!!

Do you play in a band or have you been playing in a band?
Nope.  The last time I was in any band was when I played the recorder and glockenspiel at school in Xmas concerts!  Would love to become good enough to use this to perform in some way, if not massively musically or professionally.

Why do you play guitar?
Because it makes me smile, even when my fingers hurt.  I like the maths and logic behind some of the theory.

What are your goals for the future?
To actually play some proper riffs.  Feel content playing (badly!) in groups of amateurs and humming along to old favourites that we get to know.   Would like to get my head around some proper music theory and arrangements.

Which guitar(s) do you own?
1970 Kimbara acoustic, 2005 Santos Matinez acoustic, 2014 Jaxville Fender Strat copy

Which guitar do you currently play on?
I like to spend some time on each, they all speak a different language.

Which amp(s) do you own?
A cheap 10 amp Rockburn - it'll do to learn on.

How long have you been playing guitar?
I have owned my guitars for about 4 years but have only just begun to believe I can actually learn to play them.

Which is/are your favorite music genre(s)?
WOW!, that's a big question. I think I enjoy anything that's played well, i.e: Mark Knopfler's 'Going Home' (Local Hero), but I am leaning toward soft sounding country/ folk/ classical finger picking numbers (Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, etc) for my own playing pleasure.

Which genre do you play on your guitar often? At the moment none, the ignition is on, the engine is running and I'm in first gear with the clutch in, ready to let rip.

Who are your favorite bands?
How much space have we got?
1, Dire Straits (who can't like their music) 2, Queen, 3, most of the 60's and 70's bands.
4, Loads of country/ folk singers and light classical's.
(I've been around a long time and the wonderful 60's n 70's was my teen's - we were spoilt for choice, there was so much brilliant music about (and we could see it live) that's why so many kids today love the music of yesterday, it is so timeless and memorable.

What inspired you to start playing guitar?
It's something I tried when I was young, but life got in the way. Now I've got time (retired) I want to catch up a bit.

Do you play in a band or have you been playing in a band? No

Why do you play guitar? For the sheer pleasure of learning, I wish I had persevered a long time ago.

What are your goals for the future?
Just to be able to play some pleasant music on the guitar, and put a smile on my face doing it.
