In the bottom right corner click on the settings icon (the one that looks like a gear wheel.  A window will popup giving you the option to adjust speed.  Select a speed of 0.5 and you can see the strumming pattern more clearly.

I played the pattern again last night, I was mistaken in the change a(U).

This may not be possible when using a tablet... Might only work from a computer browser.

Interesting you laid out the pattern this way; I've watched the video repeatedly from 5:01 on to also try to ascertain the strumming pattern. 

If I understand your layout above, there is an added 16th note after the "2 and" / "3 and"  / "4 and"?  If Justin is playing all 8th notes there cannot be 3 notes for the beat plus the "and" unless the "and" is split into two 16th notes. 

Is that what is happening here because according to the book there is only an up-strum at the 3-and and the 4-and?

@captainamerica To be honest, I still haven't dove into 8th/16th, so I can't be of help here. However, note that there are two hammers-on  - I assume you them about them already - before 1(D) in Amin and the second one before 1(D) in C.

I hope someone experienced can explain and answer your question :)

The key is to follow through the video, step by step as indicated.  Depending on where you are on your learning journey you may spend a week on each step, or a few minutes on each step - beginner and intermediate respectively.

Also doing something like the following, probably with pen and paper, for each step is immensely helpful.  Something about writing it down and having a visual representation - particularly how each step adds on to the previous step - is huge.

As you gain experience with more and more techniques, the need for this kind of detail diminishes.  But I went with the full monty here assuming complete beginnerhood, and as a recommendation of how to approach solving issues like this on your own:

Cap'n,

1)  Counting 4/4 time.

     Quarter note (4 per bar):  1  2  3  4  every beat gets one pulse
 
     Eighth note (8 per bar):  1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and --> which I represent as:  1  +  2  +  3  +  4  +
    every beat gets two pulses

     16th note (16 per bar):  1 ee and a  2 ee and a  3 ee and a  4 ee and a --> which I represent as
     1 e  + a  2 e + a  3 e + a  4 e + a  every beat gets 4 pulses.

     In all cases the 1 2 3 4 are in the same "spot" so yes you are stuffing extra strums/pick in between. 

     So quarter notes to eighth notes you add an extra pulse, the "and" between the 4 beats 1 2 3 4.

     Then eighth to sixteenth the 1 2 3 4 and the "ands" are all in the same "spot" and you add an
     extra strum/pick inbetween the beats and the "ands".

     The "magic" in the rhythm of this song is as much in the 16th notes you skip as in the ones that you 
     play.

2)  In the video I watched the chords and the fingerings I have listed are the chords and fingerings
     Justin shows.

     At about 1:25 he states quite clearly "Am, Fmaj7, C, and G."  Then he gives the fingerings as shown.

3)  Likewise to quote,  "...its the up after 3..."  Listen to him count while he plays.  He changes the
     chord on the "e" after 3.  Just watched it again... watch his face/head as he counts and strums - he
     emphasizes the change with his body language.

     Tab is accurate to Justin's video.  Sounds like you tried to jump right to the end.  Try counting along:
     1   and   2   and a 3 ee and   4   and a, D   d   D   d u D u d   D   d u...

     I'll put in the "skipped" strums in parentheses:
     1 (e)  and (a) 2 (e)   and a 3 ee and (a) 4 (e) and a, D (u)  d (u)  D (u)  d u D u d (u) D   d u...

Great worth here Shadow, but no more full tabs like this or I might get in trouble!! I'll leave this one here but especially because I work with publishers for my books, I have to be careful not to take the mickey and allow tabs on my site or forum or I might start finding it harder to get licensing!

I have a question about the strumming.  I've got the pattern down, and I'm palm muting off and on -- and it's not bad if I go slow, but the faster I get, the more my pick gets caught up in the strings and it's not smooth.  Any advice?

Patience  :)

Keep practising it and picking up the tempo to the point where you are still in control.  And over time the tempo at that point will pick up.

I'd go as strong as to say don't play it at a tempo where it breaks down.  When you reach that point immediately back down to get back into control.  Practising what is not working will just strengthen poor technique.

Don't believe there are any shortcuts  ;)

Play it using a metronome at a tempo you can get it right and gradually build up to tempo, it will take a time so patience is important - more haste, less speed!

Yes patience!  I do struggle with that one. You're both right!
And I also think the idea of stopping before you're messing up is good.  I do have a tendency to practice my mistakes.

That is going to kill your progress dead in its tracks, golden rule 'Don't practice mistakes, go slower until you get it right' This is perhaps THE most important one.

I'm not sure this song fits in the Beginner section... 16th note strumming, a kinda tricky change to F, pushing the change, palm muting.
There's a lot here. But I guess you can start off easy, and add complexity as you go.

Hey guys,

One thing I have a major (no pun intended) problem with is the E string.
I try muting it with my thumb, however I find myself touching the high E string with the palm of my hand sometimes or the string touches my first finger and makes a really terrible sound.
On the other hand, when I try to play with my thumb behind the neck, it's awkwart to mute the E string with my ring finger (I got used to playing C like that, but in case of Fmaj7 it's still hard to pull off for me).

Another thing is that the high E string doesn't really sound good to my ears, even if it's ringing out properly.
I have a feeling like it overpowers the rest of the strings' sound.

Any advice you guys can share from your own experience?
