Title: Cover songs- Even better than the real thing
Post by: brianlarsen on June 28, 2019, 04:02:21 pm
In a previous life, I had a two-hour weekly slot on a local internet radio station, where I could (within reason) play and say whatever I liked

I usually had a theme for the show and particularly enjoyed doing one with the above title, where I played covers that I preferred to the original (or most well-known version).

After hearing Nick Cave play his Mercy Seat live two days ago, I will kick it off, not with the most famous cover of that song by the Man in Black, but by the lesser known Antipodeans, The Red Paintings.
(Interesting trivia: Trash McSweeney, the singer, has synaesthesia- He hears colours)

I’d be interested to hear other, preferably lesser known/unusual, great covers
Cheers

I'm perhaps the biggest Doors fan on this forum. Light My Fire was their biggest hit. The cover I am contributing is NOT better than the real thing but it is likely the most unusual. For your listening pleasure I give you......the incomparable, Mae West!

Great cover, Brian. I knew this song from the Cash cover,  from the American Series that is has some special covers, such as One, originally U2 but I'll take the Cash version.

Different indeed.

May have been the biggest hit, but not best song in my book .... there's another topic.  Bands whose biggest hit or most eell known song is not their best ...

Initially nothing sprang to mind.  And then I remembered ...

Ha! A couple of glasses of wine later, and I might be tempted to put up my own version here  ;)

Yours reminded me of this one, which for some reason has over 1/2 billion views on YT- much more than the S&G original...

You have to be good to better the original but this does it in spades.

great topic ... and wow on having had your own theme time radio slot ... off topic slightly ... did you ever listen to Bob Dylan's theme time radio hour show?

ps

I will try to come back with an on topic selection soon

There have been so many version of Man of Constant Sorrow that I don't even know who did the original but
one of the better known version is from the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6klHNfF2e_4

My favourite version is done by Dwight Yoakam. Way different from the Soggy Bottom Boys' version.

Great topic

Very different, really enjoyed it.  Better.  Hmmm, almost so different that it can't be compared.  I love a wild live version, with the tempo lifted way up there ...

Here's another.  Mate of mine who loves guitar was blown away by this song.  Told me all about the G3 performances.  He was shocked when I told him it was a Neil Young tune ... he didn't know much more NY than Heart of Gold.

I prefer the original to any cover 99 out of 100 times. There are many covers that are possibly better than the original but if I am forced to select the one version I will listen to for the rest of my life - then 99 times out of 100 I will pick the original. There are exceptions - Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah, Ron Sexsmith's Ring Them Bells, Them's It's All Over Now Baby Blue. And this - Aztec Camera's Jump:

To be honest, my favourite version of this song is by Mary Lou Lord - but the graphic for her video was just too weird to post here.

So many people do not know that Bob Dylan wrote and recorded All Along The Watchtower because we've been inundated with the Jimi Hendrix version for decades. This one is a classic in every sense.

c ... and wow on having had your own theme time radio slot ... off topic slightly ... did you ever listen to Bob Dylan's theme time radio hour show?
It was fun while it lasted; quite self-indulgent, as it took me a fair bit of time to choose what I wanted to play and say. Creative in it's own way, but I'm far happier investing my time in acquiring guitar skills to make crappy music, rather than push the play button for the excellent stuff (though I still like that).
I think at my peak I had between 10-20 listeners, half of whom I had invited on my fb page. I think I would have enjoyed working in radio as a career and even though I haven't listened to Bob's show, I'm not surprised so many pop stars have ended up presenting their own radio programmes  :)

@ Kontenda
I'm with you on most of the original vs cover debate, but every now and again a gem comes along.
The Aztec Camera version is special. I'm not sure however, if it would be as good if you didn't know the original. For me there is an element of 'I can't stand that song- oh wait, this actually sounds good'  ;)

While I'm at it I might as well offer another of my favourites:
Spirits in the Night, written by The Boss, but blown out of the water by Manfred Mann's Earth Band.
Still sounds fresh to these ears 44 years later

One of my first thoughts was the Dixie Chicks cover of Landslide. It's a great cover, but it's not better than the original. Than I googled Landslide covers and came up with this cover by the Smashing Pumpkins - I don't know any of their music and I don't think this is better than the original either, but this live version has a great acoustic lead

For songs that really are better than the original, sorry to all the Bowie fans out there, but my favorite is Nirvana's version of The Man Who Sold the World

(How do you embed an actual YouTube clip, instead of a link??)

In the case of the Nirvana video you posted, you only want to copy this part of the link "fregObNcHC8" (without quotes). Click the Youtube button from the reply toolbar and paste it in between the square brackets.  You never want to paste the whole Youtube link, just the several characters after the first equal sign. You also do not want to include this part "&feature=youtu.be".

Hope that makes sense.

I'm reluctant to say this cover version is better than the original as it could be considered heresy by some... but it's pretty good I think-

Tried to modify my post using your explanation hilts but I’ve screwed it all up and lost the links. This tech is beyond me! I’ll get back to guitar practice and reading other peoples posts!

Shawn Colvin released an album called Cover Girl ... of covers.
It is great from start to finish.

I'm a huge fan of Bob Dylan yet dare to suggest this is better:

And this is a less well known song she has covered here - but simply beautiful:

Absolutely, you only need to watch the looks on Jimmy Page and Robert Plant’s faces to appreciate just how good it is - apart from taking time to listen to it of course!

I think I'd agree with you Darrell.

Good to hear from you again, here and on some other topics !!

Thanks David, it’s part of my ‘to do’ list which is part of my CBT for my health issues, early days yet but at least I’m now getting some more meaningful treatment!

Take a great poet, get a great band to cover his song and you have something special.
I never understood why this wasn't more popular

Hey Brian, some great tunes in this thread, thought i'd have a crack.
.
Now I love Bob Dylan, I'm a big fan so this isn't easy.  But I'm a big enough fan to know that Bob was a better song writer than singer/performer.   Anyway, check this out.    This aired on my favorite tv show Rock Wizz.  The guy singing is Cal something or other from an Aussie band called Eskimo Joe.  The rest of the musicians are the house band, except the fiddle player, and play her fiddle she does. (you're welcome)
.
This is the story of the Hurricane.  Check it out

Ha! this ain't my thread- I just gave the rock on the slope a nudge  ;)

Great cover that!
The singer does a great job of hinting at Mr. Zimmerman, without the 'sandpaper & glue' qualities.
The violin is what makes it stand out for me though.

It brings back fond memories of a couple of years ago when I was working with a charity promoting mental health in Uganda.
I organised a series of gigs, where I got local musicians to perform songs to raise funds for the cause.
Here's a really dodgy recording from one of our Dylan themed nights.
A really good friend of mine is playing violin on this. The violin he is playing belonged to Scarlet Rivera, Dylan's violinist on Desire and the Rolling Thunder Revue.
(Although this is a cover, it is definitely not 'even better than the real thing')

It was a blast from the past when I saw it also Richard.  They really do get some good guests on the show who nearly always do a cover.   Shows filmed live in a well know pub in Melbourne with an audience.

Terrific cover version! BD must be one of the worlds most covered artists - after Lennon/McCartney I would guess.

@ brianlarsen I'm going to ignore the 'you not being the op thing' and move on.

That was quite a moving performance I thought.  Thank you Brian.  Promoting mental health anywhere is massively important.  For you to do that work, for and with a charity organization in Africa is a honourable and noble thing to do.  Thank you.

That violin sounded great with your friend playing it,  I really thought it was a powerful performance.

Cheers to you Brian, and to everyone doing things to make a positive difference on the planet.

I'm glad you liked it.  My housemate and I rock out to it quite often,  wasn't sure if it would be received that well.   Cheers sairfingers.  I've wondered for a while now.  Is sairfingers, 'sore fingers' with an accent?

Heard this on the radio recently and thought of this thread. I was never a fan of of Deacon Blue but I like this:

She also does an interesting cover of whole of the moon - not better that the original though:

She has a whole album of covers out just now called Scottish Songbook.

Yeah, sorry, but no, as much as I love the Man in Black, his version of Hurt just doesn't get me the same way the original does, or the way the live version with David Bowie does...

But on the subject of covers, one artist always gets me when he does covers of songs by Kris Kristofferson : Shawn Mullins.
His covers of Darby's Castle and Casy's Last Ride are awesome, but the best, IMHO, is his cover of 'Sunday Morning Coming Down' :

[edit] Well xx--xx, I forgot to post the song that I came in here for.

Imagine the following :
You take the internationally acclaimed South African singer/songwriter Dave Matthews.
You team him up with the somehow less known, but no less awesome American Singer/Songwriter and allround badass Warren Haynes.
You put them both in Central Park, and have them play a cover of Cortez the Killer by Neil Young.
Does that sound like an awesome idea to you ?
Well, stop imagining and go have a look/listen :
