Title: Cover // Older Chests - Damien Rice
Post by: max_mue on March 15, 2019, 11:57:15 am
Hey there :)

Finally had the time to record something today. The song is written by Damien Rice and I played it for the first time last week and I have memorized it by now :)  I'm still experimenting with the last chorus though, but I wanted it to share with you anyway :)

PS: Be careful when listening with headphones, I couldn't check yet if there are any spikes in volume

PPS: There are 2 covers of songs in German over at my channel, if anyone is interested in that (I've posted them in my Road Case 2 weeks ago)

Gosh Max, I had to get up pretty early to take this one in first.. Really like this and your vocals please as always. You got a sweet spot to record in for sure.

Keep it going and looking for more as you go along your path!

Lovely performance, Max.  I get entranced watching your hands, listening to your voice.  I enjoyed that last chorus.  I wondered if you'd flip back to the picking in the outro?

As LBro said, quality of the recording is great.  I am assuming recorded as a single track with a good quality condensor?  If so, how far back was the mic and how was it positioned?

A treat as always.

@LBro: Haha  ;D Glad you liked it! :)

@David: Thank you!!

That's one of the things I'm currently trying out :)

It's actually recorded with my phone, but I recorded it in our staircase - a bit uncomfortable, but I like the acoustics there ;D

Wow ... amazing how good a recording one can make with just a phone.  Will agree with you ... great acoustics :)

Hey Max, that's a really nice take on the original. Guitar? Good! Vocal? Good! What's not to like? It's always a pleasure listening to your content.

If I'm not mistaken I'm seeing constant small improvements with each passing song, be that guitar or vocal technique to general overall performance. It would be pretty cool to see you perform an acoustic set live. :)

Wouldn't that be great ... Max plus so many others who post here.  The JG Festival in ... Prague ( I hear Prague is a wonderful place to visit, among many other wonderful places in Europe ... before I get flamed :) )

A very emotional performance, great stuff.
I did listen with headphones and didn't notice and major volume spikes - the voice sounds way louder than the guitar though, but not to a point where it makes it any less enjoyable.

Very nice, the finger picking certainly looks impressive, I could never get it right when I tried it. Great singing too.

Superb Max! As has been said, the guitar work and vocal is excellent. You have a way of performing which draws the listener/viewer in as you seem 100% taken over by the song, like you’re living it....every word. I liked the change to strumming at the end. Looks like you’ll be recording your album on the staircase  ;D Nice one!

Nicely done Max.
There are some golden nuggets on that Damien Rice album and you do this one justice.

It's all already been said Max, not much else to add except that you have a real talent and passion for what you're doing and it's so great to see and hear your performances

Really nice performance Max.
You're very good at picking and singing, not an easy thing to do. I watched the video yesterday for the first time directly on youtube, so did not see this post, but I liked the variation for the last part, I was a bit surprise but it's a really nice change and keep the attention of the audience, so I don't know other stuff you tried but I think this is good.

Cheers man

All the stuff that's been said before me .... yeah. I'm a fan Max and you never disappoint.  :)

One thing you might want to watch in the playback - look at the tension in your jaw and mouth. This affects tonal quality and makes projection harder. I think we're missing out on some of the beauty of your voice because of this.

We all have tension habits. Might be useful to find where you hold tension, and where it's become a habit. Then do something about it before it becomes chronic injury. I say this with the voice of experience.  :'(

Beautiful, Max. And I dig your studio. Just goes to show if you’ve got the goods you don’t need expensive equipment.  Outstanding performance.

I have the feeling, too - glad I'm not the only one :)

@jono:
It takes some time, but Justin's module is pretty good! Start slowly and you'll get there :)

@birdland: Thank you! I usually choose songs that I can connect with in some way or another, here it was  'too many books / read me your favoirte line' and from there on I try to expand my 'connection to the song'. :)

@close: Definitely! Glad you're happy with my rendition :)

@Cagn: Thanks for the feedback on the last part :)

@Maggie: Thanks for the closer look, I'll keep an eye on it!

Damien Rice is right in your wheelhouse, and you drove this one home and put it to bed! Can't say enough good things about it. Great listen as always. :)

Hey Max,
I enjoyed this when you first posted it and meant to comment, but got distracted.
I just gave it another proper listen and it is even better than I had recalled.
Not only is the playing and singing faultless, it's a cool video as well.
Lots of emotion going on  :'(
If you can get any of that across at your open mic nights, you'll be away on a hack!  8)

@Brian: Thanks so much :) I played it at my last open stage session, but it was a bit too loud at that moment - maybe I'll have better luck next time ^^

@Toby: Thank you! :)

Max,

I'm late to the party as I was on a warm beach when you posted this. Still catching up on stuff.

What can I say about this that hasn't already been said. This is a very lovely performance of a very lovely song. Your fingerstyle playing is flawless to me and your vocals are just fantastic. Seriously Max, I could string all your songs together and just sit back for an afternoon and have a relaxing listen. Fantastic!

Yeah, it’s mostly all been said. Wonderful performance. I love the video too. Great “natural?” lighting. Love the simplicity of it, the shadow on the wall, a touch of a frame in the background. Just fits perfectly. Great vocals, fingerpicking & strumming. I admire your ability to memorize so much. Something I am extremely lacking in. Happy & proud for you.

Most of the times I only memorized ~4 songs at a time. I 'forced' myself to memorize all the songs I'd like to perform now, it takes some time, but I definitely think it's worth it :)

@Barend: Thanks! :)
