Title: Ear training or transcribing?
Post by: bobwatt67 on February 13, 2018, 08:22:08 am
Hi everyone.

I’ve moved on from the intermediate course to either the ear training or transcribing course but don’t know which would be the best move next.
I’ve never attempted either in the past but know my transcribing in the intermediate course never started after several attempts.
Justin does mention transcribing a few times in his first video on the ear training course so do they go hand in hand.
Very confused here and desperately looking for some professional help before I end up getting some.
My guitar physical work is limited but at least I can watch and listen.
Thanks everyone.
Bob

Hi Bob, keep working on your playing as a fundamental.
Ear training and transcribing are wholly interlinked.
They are a virtuous pairing.
They are also extraordinarily time consuming so make sure you are disciplined with your regular practice and enjoyment of playing.

Thanks Stitch.
I’m restricted at the moment from playing but hope to be up and running in about six months so I’m told hopefully due to a bad head injury a while back.
Miss playing and posted playing what I recorded quite some time ago.
Frustration day today to get back to it and can’t wait to get back to it.
Roll on back getting back to the books and playing some tunes.
Cheers
Bob

I have been slowly working on both.
Not spending to much time on it but have struggled more with the intervals than transcribing.

Hope you get well soon Bob.

As Close said they are interlinked. Actually you use your ear training TO transcribe. Ear training is about recognizing/identifying a particular note/chord on the guitar.

Transcribing is nothing more than doing this repetitively for every chord progression/solo/melody and writing it down.

The tools used to do both are similar. For example, the JUSTIN ear training exercises have you listen to a chord/note progression and then you try to find and reproduce that chord/note on the guitar.

If you have finished with the BC and Intermediate courses you should already be well on your way with both of these skills so I don't think you really need to pick. Just do a bit of both.
