Title: Pimp my Hobner ! All input appreciated !
Post by: troy on September 01, 2017, 11:50:17 pm
I thought I'd start a little thread on my new (to me) acquisition. A Hobner 265 Archtop (no, not a spelling mistake, more on that later). I'll explain a little later on the whys and wherefores of this particular guitar as  it's quite a long winded story, but for the time being I'll just try and post a picture. So, basically this first post is about me trying to get a picture posted properly !  Once I'm happy that I can format this properly I'll get into the nitty gritty.  I promise, this will develop into a DIY modification type thread eventually but I wanted to give the whole back story so you have an idea where I'm coming from.

Right. I think I've got that sorted. If you click on thumbnails it'll take you to a larger image and if you then click on that it'll fill your screen !

If someone could confirm that the thumbnails work properly that would be good. Later on I'll be getting into some close up detail and if the pictures are rubbish it'll make it a whole lot harder !

So, a bit of background. I'm 51 now but my father bought me a guitar when I was about 15ish I suppose, an Ibanez something or other which was really heavy I seem to remember, but back then we couldn't afford lessons and the internet was just but a twinkle in Tim Berners-Lee's eyes. Inevitably, trying to learn from just a book is just not going to work so it was all quickly forgotten and life moved on.

Fast forward 30 odd years later and I'm now a few months shy of being 50, not picked up a guitar since, and I hear this on Radio 6......... From the album Bashed Out by This Is The Kit

Magic Spell by This Is The Kit. I didn't know anything at the time but just remember hearing the sound of the rhythm guitar on the radio and thinking it sounded awesome !  That moment switched on a lightbulb and the guitar itch began.......

I promise, I will get to the point of my thread shortly !

So after hearing the track on BBC Radio 6 I have a search on Youtube and find the above video which is obviously a stripped back live performance and think the guitar sounds even MORE awesome. Clean but with a real bit of low end dirtyness and growl.

My interest in the whole guitar world is now piqued and I spend hours and hours on guitar sites like this reading and learning, all started by a track on 6 Music ! Time to buy a guitar !

Bum. Big Time. That's a Hofner President she's playing. German, vintage, archtop...........a quick Google determines that is going to be totally out of my price range ! £££££££

A lovely guitar you will agree, but well beyond my finances so I buy this.....

Good choice with the Ibanez, they are very nice especially for what they cost!
Yes your thumbnails are good, c'mon get to the point the suspense is killing me ;)

Great song, Troy, loved that guitar.

Once you start talking tone, you'll really get this Community talking  ;)

As Darrell says...c'mon, get on with the story.....

Thanks for confirmation on the thumnails ! And I will, indeed, "get on with it" !

I thought I'd spend a bit of time explaining this convoluted back story as this boards hardly busy and it would be quite a quiet corner of the internet to hide it really.  ;)

So....... The Ibanez AF55, or  AF55-tf,  to give it it's proper name was duly purchased in Feb 2016, the "tf" relates to the finish "tobacco flat" which is what it says on the tin "flat", no glassy shine here ! And the learning to play it begins in earnest. Probably, like a lot of people, you think you're too old, and at 49 I thought the same thing, but I was quite surprised at how quickly I came along with the help of this site in particular.

What I wasn't prepared for was the way this whole guitar thing gets under your skin. I'd purchased the cheapest archtop I could find (£230?), I found it really nice to play, plugged in when the wife was out  ;), and unplugged when the wife was in  :(. The real advantage of archtops I believe and the best of both worlds.  It was also very pretty to look at and hangs on the wall in pride of place.

Then it started, the tinkering !  I wanted that Hofner President sound ! So, as you may have noticed, the Ibanez looks a little different from the catalogue as I started out the tinkering (slowly at first) with a change of bridge, accelerating rapidly to frenetic tinkering with a new Harp tailpiece, different pickups, flatwound strings, locking tuners, and for a bit of bling, chrome knobs and ivory pickup rings. My wife is going mad as seemingly a new package from ebay arrives daily. There is no such thing as having too many bridges, I now have about 5 I think !

Then the amps start arriving. A Yamaha THR5, a Fender Mustang 3 and a Dean Markly DMC 40  (not in this pic)

With all the technology of the modelling Yamaha THR and Mustang 3 I'm getting really close to the Hofner sound now !

As an aside, that Ibanez is simply brilliant. It's so cheap you can mess about with it to your hearts content and not worry about at all and I've derived so much pleasure from the experimentation. Just by swapping the bridges around from bone, to wood, to the original tune-o-matic makes such a difference to the sound unplugged and can be done in minutes. Round wound strings, half round, flat wound, I think I've tried them all in every possible configuration with every different bridge !  Ebay is in love with me, my wife is not !

Fast forward a few months, the learning is going well, the GAS is not though. I've also got Hofners Syndrome affecting me and I've had the "no more amps" warning from the wife. Nobody warns you it's going to be like this when you decide to learn a few chords so you can have a sing song around the campfire do they ?

A new year dawns, 2017, and I'm in a band ! Hard to believe I know.

I use the word "band" loosely. It's a loose gathering of the untalented basically who had to fill a few minutes at my mate Jonathans 50th birthday party.

The squeamish should look away now.....  It was recorded for posterity ! My mate Jonathan is the tall bloke singing and guitar, his son is on drums, my mate Nick starts off on bass but does a bit of singing later, The local vet is hidden in the dark on mandolin ( right up there with fingernails and blackboards in my book) and I'm nearest the camera with my head cut off, starting with the Ibanez on the first song and playing bass for the last three.  I forgot to tell you that I'd also bought a bass and should have mentioned it earlier. I probably tried to erase it from memory as the wife was near apoplectic.

Anyway, you've been warned. Covers of New Model Army, The Vaccines, The Band and The Waterboys are not my choice and bear in mind I'd only been learning and playing guitar (and now bass) for about a year.

As they say on Masterchef. ENJOY !

Hey Troy, loving this story.

As is so often the case, your build up or should I say build down into the video was overstated ... or maybe I am just the opposite end of "squeamish".  I saw 5 blokes having a lot of fun and making some reasonable music.

It would've been nice if the camera man had moved over to the vet's side of the stage and filmed from that angle ... I think it is more enjoyable to see the guitars from that side to watch the hands and fingers at play.

I also assume there was no sound man employed for this performance to tweak the various levels.  But still what I heard sounded OK.

Maybe down the line in my future such a fun moment may present itself ...

Keep on rocking and (of course) looking forward to the next episode  :)

Thank you David for your kind words !  I'm writing this more for my own amusement really but anyone is welcome along the journey. Hopefully (and quite desperately) i'm trying to turn this thread round to Hofner Presidents, I'll get there soon.

The "gig" was indeed a great deal of fun and when you get to my age you lose a lot of the self consciousness of youth. I laughed out loud about your camera man comment, the "camera" man you refer to was, in fact, The Vet on Mandolin. I think he set it on a tripod so it would get a good angle on him but little did he know how badly lit he was !! Karma my friend, Karma !  Sound levels were easy, turn everything up to 11.  My Ibanez was plugged into my Mustang 3 (100 Watts). My recently acquired Yamaha Bass was into the Dean Markly (40 watts) Jonathan was into a 10 watt Peavey so the balance was just about perfect in my book !  Who cares, it was a laugh.

Here is the Dean Markley DMC 40 and the Yamaha Bass for posterity

(https://s26.postimg.org/jb6k42az9/DSC_0025.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/jb6k42az9/)

So...... a quick precis......

1. Equipment.  From ground zero in Feb 2016 never having really played a note I now had.....The Ibanez, The Yamaha THR5 amp, The Fender Mustang 3 amp, A Yamaha Bass (pre-loved as they say), A mid nineties Dean Markley amp which I was quite happy to blow the cones out of with the bass, 5 Bridges, and a sh1tload of picks, spares, cables and other paraphernalia.

2. I was addicted to Ebay

3. I was in love with Kate Stables from This Is The Kit (see earlier Youtube vid). I was in love with her Hofner President more. I had the Bashed Out album on constant loop in the house.

4. I was in a band

5. My marriage was in trouble  :)

It gets worse.

6. Unknowingly I had now infected my daughter with the GAS

TBC.......And onto Hofners (soon)

The Kate Stables Hofner looks like it just has a P90 in the neck position and in the rhythm it sounds like she's palm muting, and yes she is quite striking, and very talented ;)

Ah, The Kate Stables Hofner.........  I'm saving that one.... for now !

I'll just very quickly embellish point 6 above. The cross contamination of my daughter with the GAS.

She's 15 and took a shine to my Ibanez as soon as it arrived so without going mad another guitar entered the house......tin hat time with the wife (again).

One of these.........

(https://s26.postimg.org/keqog0vmd/DSC_0022.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/keqog0vmd/)

A Squier (let's not forget "By Fender") Bought from Argos as a kit with the bag, tuner, stand etc for about £70 ish ? You know what it's like with kids, everything is a complete flash in the pan and a one minute wonder. I'm not going to be shelling out serious money for something that's going to sit under the bed and, what's more, I had my own problems with the GAS to trouble me and my wallet.

My now calculating mind was also thinking if I can get my daughter "on board" so to speak then I can push some of my wifes (now extreme) anger onto her. How devious am I ?  ;D

Well, it kind of worked. She plonked away on The Squier and was now even having "proper" guitar lessons ! As you can probably tell from the above "gig" video, I have never darkened the door of a proper musician, how pathetic that would be, I know best and can get by with internet tutorials. I am an ace guitarist !  "Proper" lessons are for wimps.

After a few short months she is now playing the Squier like a bloody Stradavarius, riffing solos, sliding barre chords up and down and being really annoying. £12 for a half hour lesson ? Daylight robbery if you ask me. I could buy another bridge for that sort of money and be equally as good. Couldn't I ?  I very optimistically think that the jury is still out on the lessons/even more equipment conundrum.

Anyway, this little story came back to seriously bite me in the ass as is usually the way. "Dad" she says one morning in that kind of pleading manner, "What" I bark waking me momentarily from my Hofners Syndrome, which had been getting considerably worse. " It's my birthday soon, can I get an electric guitar ?" Aha... I see another guitar coming...... not being bought for me though....... for my daughter........ what can possibly go wrong. As Hannibal from The A Team would say, I love it when a plan comes together !  "Ask your mother !" I replied knowing what the answer would be .Hahahahaha

Begrudgingly, as she loves her daughter, she has to agree, again, more internal hahaha from me as I am now legally allowed to go out to a proper guitar shop without the guilt ! I don't think this has ever happened before and the feeling is a bit unsettling.

I'm in heaven at the PMT guitar shop in Bristol with my daughter. We spend a fair few hours in there trying out Epiphones, Gretsch, Fenders etc. No Hofners though so I shed a small tear over that. THE standout guitar however was the Ibanez AS73-BLK, and I promise you, this was definitely her decision.

She wanted a semi hollow and there was no point in buying another full hollow so this now entered the house.....

 (https://s26.postimg.org/vsd7r8651/DSC_0023.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/vsd7r8651/)

No tin hat needed. Up yours darling !

Although this little outing did cost me just a little shy of £500 with a hard case my daughter contributed £200 to this as I had to be sure she would be committed. Ass slightly bitten therefore but I love my daughter and she's worth it. It was probably worth the £150 an hour it cost me to go into the guitar shop and look around guilt free.

Surely we have to be talking half a ropey Hofner President for that kind of money ?

The Kate Stables (aka This Is The Kit)Story

In which I meet my future wife after having buried my present one under the patio of course (in my dreams).

Fast forward to June 2017 and I have use of 4 guitars, 3 amplifiers, tons of bits and pieces, all of which, with the greatest will in the world, cannot replicate the sound and tone of a Hofner President. I can get close but no cigar and I'm still in the band. Yay ! I think it is because the other members cannot find anyone with as equally little talent as themselves.

Good News Arrives !! Kate Stables (future wife), aka This Is The Kit are releasing a new album "Moonshine Freeze". Guy Garvey on BBC radio 6 has been singing her praises for years and the single "Moonshine Freeze" gets onto the Radio 6 playlist and is on constant rotation setting off my Hofners Syndrome again but now to a much higher level (extreme) !

More lovely arty Hofnerness.

I have to get this album and I want it immediately on the day of the release. Now, I don't normally do this as I usually get it off The Pirate Bay like everyone else, and is a strange one for me, actually paying for a CD. ..... this sets off a chain of events and it's fate !

That is a AS73G, not a AS73. They sell for around £420. If you got it and a hard case for under 500 quid it was a bargain ;)

Thanks JdG it is indeed an AS73G. Ibanez always have such easily memorable names !! I won't go back and edit the post as your correction is spot on.

I posted on another thread about this guitar (I can't remember which one). For the price it was head and shoulders above the Gretsch Streamliner, Epiphones and other semi hollows we tried. A lovely guitar which I enjoy playing a lot and the few extra frets over my AF55 do make a difference. I'd liken it more to a full on electric than the full hollow jazzbox end of the spectrum though. She's delighted with it (and so am I  ;D )

so............back to the Kate Stables (aka This is The Kit (future wife story)) continued.

The album "Moonshine Freeze" is out soon and I needed to pre-order it to get it on the day of release, a quick Google reveals that I can order it from Rise Records which is at the top of Park Street in Bristol, but what's this on their website.......... pre-order, yes....get it on the day of release, yes.....£10 , yes.......... free wristbands, what ? ......personal apperance, eh ? ...... intimate gig, come again ?

If I'm reading this right and pre-order the album they'll send me two wristbands for an intimate promotional evening in the company of Kate Stables, aka This Is The Kit !. Result ! And indeed, Back of the Net ! Limited spaces......quick !

I couldn't send the £10 soon enough as to me this was a once in a lifetime chance to meet my hero......... The Hofner President.. :).... Sorry Kate, but let's be honest, I'd have sold my own mother into a North Korean work camp to get hold of one by now.

I was probably up to about my 7th bridge on The Ibanez at this point with the elusive Hofner tone seemingly further away than ever.

The CD arrives on the day of release with the two wristbands in the post. I feign an illness, take a sicky from work, and when the wife has left to go to her job I jump up and play the album continually for the next eight hours only returning to bed when I hear her car pull up on the gravel outside  ;D

I'm almost beside myself with Hofner Syndrome and guitar envy.

Hofner President finger picking styleeee...this is just beautiful, played acoustically, the guitar of my dreams sounds great and Kate is looking none to shabby either ....just forward the arty books thing at the beginning as it adds nothing.

And latest release

If you watch these videos through, just be careful ! You too could easily end up with Hofner GAS and I suggest that other GAS sufferers wear a blindfold, not look at your screen and just listen through headphones.

Hey there, Troy

Must say this morning was seriously laugh out loud, catching up on the latest episodes.

Before I say anything else, I'd suggest asking a Moderator to move this thread out from DIY to Road Cases.  In that area people post pictures of their gear and some tell their personal story of love and learning guitar ... such as myself.

Tones is such an interesting topic.  I like a quote from Keith Richard's who said "give me any guitar and an amp and I can make it sound pretty much like anything you like".

May not be absolutely true, but there seems some useful insight in terms of appreciating that there is a whole chain from the guitar, pickups, pedals, amp and finally speaker ... from a technical perspective.

And then there is how you play.  Even I, as a relative novice player, can change how a note sounds just through playing it differently with my pick.

As for Kate and her tone, which I really love (the tone, don't panic...not going to cut in on the loving of Kate  ;D ), especially the very first song you shared ... since Darrell mentioned the use of palm muting I've been watching closely and think I did see her doing it in a later video.  I though the sound might've been more the use of some delay or something combined with other tone settings.

So to get the sound you're dreaming about may be more than just pimping up the guitar ... some playing technique tweaks plus fine tuning the amp plus effects may get you as close as you'll get.  You could also consult somebody like Kasper, who has posted songs from Metallica, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple and Fleetwood Mac with the ability to replicate the tone pretty much flawlessly to my ears.

But I am becoming far too serious here ... much more interested in the next episode from Troy's World ...

Looking at that last video and seeing the other guitarist with a Fender Jazzmaster it looks like Kate has the same P90 as the Jazzmaster which would explain the sound.
Usually that guitar if fitted with a pickup it was a humbucker which would give a warmer fuller tone, the P90 is essentially a high gain single coil so it will be spikey and dirty by comparison.

...............The big day has arrived...........

In this post I'm going to have to give you the big reveal as one of you guys is going to twig this really soon I reckon.  And trust me it's a biggy. A real scandal up there with Watergate and Profumo where a pleasant evening takes a sudden dark twist into discussion of criminality, theft and a murky underworld with the only people party to the conversation being myself and Kate Stables out of This is The Kit (and my daughter as key witness).

The day starts warm and pleasant, I still had Hofners Syndrome but hadn't bought a bridge for several weeks, my wife and I were back on speaking terms, and things were looking up. July 12th 2017, a day forever etched on my memory. The new album "Moonshine Freeze" has been picking up rave 5* reviews in the music press and the record store promotional campaign seems to have been going well. Now, It's hard to say what configuration of "This is The Kit" is going to turn up at any given event as it is essentially a loose collective of musicians built up around the "talent", (and I mean that in both senses of the word !) Kate Stables. The previous day a youtuber had uploaded their phone camera video of the previous nights record store performance in Brighton.

So, i'm expecting to see Kate, Rozi on bass, some other guitar guy and The Kate Stables Hofner, as in said video....Kate performs "Moonshine Freeze" stood on a table....

It was late in the afternoon as me and my daughter got to Bristol and as Rise Records was at the top of Park Street in the trendy Clifton area of Bristol, parking was going to be at a premium. We decided to park some distance away, walk to Rise Records to suss out the location and then go and find something to eat. As it happened, we walked to Rise Records stuck our heads around the door and didn't see a record ! It turns out to be one of these sort of uber cool hangouts with a cafe downstairs, records, vintage clothing (or tat I would call it) upstairs.

As can be seen from the "my gig" video earlier in this thread, I am more of an age where a natty tweed waistcoat is the norm before retiring to the drawing room with a fine claret in a velveteen smoking jacket kind of guy. Rise Records is therefore not my usual type of haunt surrounded by youths that should probably have a job.

It's quite quiet downstairs as we were early and the bottom part of the room has been closed off for the performance, the front cafe part is still open so we decide to pull up a few barstools and eat in. It's quite interesting really as we can just about make out the stage from where we are sat and it looks like we are getting the full compliment of "This Is The Kit" judging by the amount of stuff on stage. This was a nice surprise but not unexpected as they are usually based in Bristol when not out touring.

Time marches on and the youths seem to be drifting off back into the evening, no doubt off to plan what particular crimes they are going to commit that night. A desk is placed right next to where we are sat. We're at the front of the queue ! which rapidly builds with a much more select type of clientele (thank god) . Many middle aged men are seen. I don't understand why though.  :)

The room is quite dark with only the stage lit. I say stage but it's just a raised platform and 1ft at most. When we are let through my daughter and I amble coolly to the very front of the raised platform, i'd wanted to run, shrieking like a girl towards the stage of course but as I'm with my daughter it would have been a bit unseemly and embarrassing ! I was going to have to play this cool. The room is quite narrow and there are about 120-150 punters so I'm glad we got there early now, people at the back wouldn't be seeing much with that low stage. And then................

......... There it Was. My Holy Grail of guitars......The Kate Stables Hofner President in all it's glory . Looking back I picture it in my mind like an angel with a glowing halo surrounding it. Iridescent in a green sunburst finish calling me. My daughter couldn't see what the fuss was about.

And...........then suddenly.......

......... There SHE was. Kate Stables in all her glory. Looking back I picture it in my mind like an angel with a glowing halo surrounding her . Iridescent in a red top and black leggings calling me. She didn't have a sunburst finish. My daughter couldn't see what the fuss was about.

We had expertly positioned ourselves to the left of stage where Kate can be usually found so had ringside seats for the next 40 minutes or so basking in the full compliment of This Is The Kit. They really are terrific live ! I didn't know what to look at most...... Kate, Hofner, Hofner, Kate, Kate, Kate, Hofner for the full set, the others didn't get a look in. I did make a mental note of the amp she was using as I'd definitely be having to buy one of those the next day. An old solid state WEM by the looks of it. Ebay here we come.

And then it was all over in a blur.   :(    The applause had died and the band were starting to pack up, the crowd were chatting amongst themselves. Kate Stables walked to the back of the stage and put The Kate Stables Hofner safely back on the rack. I was stood near the front of the stage and then she turns and walks directly back towards me, she's now stood right next to me !, my heart rate doubles, play it cool, you're with your daughter, don't make a bell end of yourself.......it was now or never....

"Hi Kate, great show" Not the greatest opening gambit I admit but she turns around and says hello . Sh1t I'm now in conversation with Kate Stables out of This is The Kit. Now what ?  Perhaps I can impress by telling her about the number of bridges I have. I'm tongue tied.

Think, THINK ! Got it ! The Hofner, why didn't I think of this sooner, something we have in common.

"Kate, Nice guitar" again, as conversations go I wished the floor would open up there and then.

"How did you come by a green Hofner President ?" I ask. This throwaway line dropped in polite conversation is where the bombshell is truly dropped..........

" Oh, it's not a Hofner it's a Hobner, my dad bought it for me at a flea market "

"WHAAAATTT !!!!!!

Things had got confusing here. The conversation had turned to the very dodgy world of the lawsuit guitar !! We therefore had to conduct our conversation under hushed tones in case the European Court of Human Rights (or whoever) had the place bugged and we'd be instantly arrested and sent to a gulag somewhere.

We then went onto having a very pleasant chat about Givsons, Fendar Stelecasters, Yemahas and Ibanexes. A very pleasant lady indeed (and a bit of posh totty to boot). And then she was gone, off to do signings. I'd have to email her later about our impending marriage.

A Hobner ! I ask you ! After all that. I did think it a little strange that I'd never seen a picture of another green one !

A double edged sword though. My Hofners Syndrome had gone. That was good.

I now had Hobners Syndrome !

Works out to about £50, absolutely PMSL.........
Thing is though it's an individual sound, which is the main thing......... It's so easy to be sucked in to expensive gear - expensive doesn't mean the best!!!
Individualism can be at any price, perhaps in this particular context a mega expensive guitar wouldn't give the right sound, now knowing its heritage I can understand how it sounds!!!
If you stuck a P90 on a chunk of plank you may get something nearer what you want than on a decent guitar ;)

Absolutely correct DarrellW !

They say never meet your hero's and I'd just met mine. The very reason I'd picked up a guitar in the first place was the sound of that very guitar I'd first heard on the radio just 16 months previously.

Was I disappointed that it was a Hobner and not a Hofner ? Not a bit of it. The hunt was on ! And this was going to be much more within my price range !

A quick Google revealed that Hobners, or more specifically, the Hobner 265 are made in India but other information is pretty thin on the ground . New they can be bought for about 7500 rupees or about £80. Second hand there are always 100's of the buggers here https://www.olx.in/all-results/q-hobner-guitar/ (https://www.olx.in/all-results/q-hobner-guitar/)  prices from £15

Come on, an archtop for £15 ! A Hofner President copy, yes. But a guitar in it's own right. Someone must want to sell me one somewhere.  I'd worked out by now that Kate Stables out of This is The Kit had made a half decent fist of a musical career with a car boot guitar and a 6 watt solid state WEM amp that would not have looked out of place in a skip !.

I'd spent more than that on just bridges !

The problem became apparent quickly though. Trawling Indian Ebay equivalents there are hundreds of these out there but you can't get in contact with sellers if you're in the UK. I'd tracked down Hobners Musik in Kolkata (That's Calcutta to you and me) and sent a speculative email but got no reply and a few others didn't reply either.

I'm also not sure of the legalities here either. The clues were all in the videos posted. The carefully changed Hofner to Hobner decal, the odd colour, it had been staring me in the face all along. Would customs let one through ? Would the Germans send over a few Heinkels to shoot up the factory. I honestly don't know.

It got even more confusing when the word HobMer turns up in a search as this hilarious thread on an indian guitar board is testament to  https://www.indianguitartabs.com/chords/threads/difference-between-hobner-265-and-hobmer-265.17101/ (https://www.indianguitartabs.com/chords/threads/difference-between-hobner-265-and-hobmer-265.17101/)

So the HobMer is a copy of a copy of a Hofner and the Hobner is the original brand in their eyes. Just plain weird. Anyway, what I can make of it is that Hobner became HobMer after about 2005. Perhaps there was a lawsuit ! LOL.

Getting one from India was proving very problematic. There must be others in the UK I was thinking as proved by Kate Stables, but where ? My shop of choice, Ebay came up with nothing so all I could do was put an email alert on there and hope for the best.

A few weeks later I get an alert and the bidding is on !! A black 265. Not my colour of choice, but hey, it's the sound I've been looking for all this time. Start price £30, I'd set my automatic bidding limit to £2000. There was no way this was getting away from me. The bidding races upwards rapidly to the giddy heights of £38 and it's mine !

Original listing here.....  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Hobner-Acoustic-Guitar-/112499349102?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=fXS%252F75GW6W668AHiSf86KIJWw%252B4%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Hobner-Acoustic-Guitar-/112499349102?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=fXS%252F75GW6W668AHiSf86KIJWw%252B4%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc)

It's sat at my feet as I type this and it makes me really happy ! I can't look at it without it raising a smile. It's been a long road with a fair few twists in it, but I have finally reached my goal. The fact it cost me £38 is totally irrelevant. It is a fact that what got me into guitar playing in the first place was hearing the tone of it for the first time on the radio all those months ago. The thought that it was out of reach on my budget. The thought that it WAS within my budget after all. Kate Stables. A chain of events that takes you on a journey which has been frustrating at times but still fun. The guitar means more to me than The Ibanez by a country mile just because of the whole back story that i wasn't going to tell you about but seem to have done anyway !

Some people aspire to fancy Gibsons and Fenders and there is nothing wrong with that, more money doesn't necessarily mean more satisfaction though. I can assure you. i'm very satisfied. The GAS has gone.

I've attained my holy grail.   A Hobner 265 !

I'll tell you what's it's like next if anyone is the slightest bit interested ?

Come on, the suspense is killing me!!!
I'm a bit that way myself, if you look in my signature I have a Japanese made (in 1970) Tenada classical I found in a junk shop for £20 that after some new strings and a bit of TLC is lovely and my Vintage V6 (Strat type) absolutely mint cost me £100 (300ish retail) - the bloke had been using his partners plastic and needed the money fast ;)
I'm always on the lookout, I have a garage full of bargains :)

I very much agree with you on the low cost guitars even though my own are from "recognized brands".

I remember the 6W WEM amp both in its Valve driven variant and the Solid state; I had its bigger cousin the Westminster - now that was lovely!!! - like this one:

Kate Stables out of This is The Kit (reluctant future wife I'm now realising) sets her WEM Clubman amp to the max here !

Just the beginning bit.  "I'll turn it up to three !"  .  Three on a 6 watt amp !! FFS !
What's that ? 1.5 watts ?  I've got a 100 watt Fender so surely I'm a 100 times better ! I wish.

Updates on the Hobner coming soon.......

So... what's been happening......

Now as the country's newest and most foremost expert on the Hobner 265 guitar I'd been thinking about setting up an owners club ! Obviously Kate (out of This is The Kit) would be member No1 and I would be No2. I'm not sure there would be many more though ? I've kept the Ebay alert on and not come across another one yet ! You would be, of course, be free to join if you can prove Hobner ownership !

What's it like ? Well, I'm obviously horridly biased but I really like it. It's a very light guitar. I was somewhat surprised by it's weight which feels much much lighter then The Ibanez, which, thinking about it, is obviously going to be the case as it has been designed as an acoustic, whereas The Ibanez wasn't. The Ibanez feels kind of digital in the hand, expertly machined by robots, quality, precise. A truly brilliant guitar don't get me wrong. Something that Kraftwerk would really appreciate !

The Hobner is none of these.

Up close it's rough and ready !  An analogue throwback in a digital world. Made of Basswood (what the hell is that ?) and based on a 60 year old design. The binding isn't even binding as it's just a thick layer of creme paint around the f holes and edges. Effective from a distance though. The label inside does state it's of Hobner Musik quality so I am slightly reassured ! The very same label can be seen in Kates Hobner in the above videos if you're vigilant.

A Zero fret..... Very Hofner !

(https://s26.postimg.org/dszt8ovpx/DSC_0007.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/dszt8ovpx/)

It's not a Hofner. Honest Guv !!

(https://s26.postimg.org/9b23uc51x/DSC_0005.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/9b23uc51x/)

If this is their "Export Quality" I hate to think what the home market guitars are like

(https://s26.postimg.org/wszb8s32t/DSC_0006.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/wszb8s32t/)

The tuners are kind of cute and I'll be keeping them. They even have a little scrolled "h" cast into the plastic.

(https://s26.postimg.org/gkj2zau8l/DSC_0033.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/gkj2zau8l/)

And I have issues with the bridge. Luckily enough I know somebody who has plenty to play around with !

(https://s26.postimg.org/o57l2zp5h/DSC_0009.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/o57l2zp5h/)

Despite the bent posts it still played OK !

The bridge is awful though. That'll be going.

(https://s26.postimg.org/8gayuk7th/DSC_0015.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/8gayuk7th/)

Witness the "Hobner Compensator Tailpiece"  A work of art ! With the legend "Hobner" scratched in !

(https://s26.postimg.org/ytbc1tz4l/DSC_0010.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/ytbc1tz4l/)

(https://s26.postimg.org/ghg36y13p/DSC_0004.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/ghg36y13p/)

I've now stripped it down. The pickup and electrics have been ordered, and it's soon to be transformed from ugly duckling ! The black is very boring so I'm looking to liven that up a bit.

I'll have to learn "Moonshine Freeze" and post it here for your critique !

Hey Troy

Thanks for another post written in your own inimitable style ... I always finish with a broad smile on my face.

Can't offer much input on the "pimping" ... playing is enough challenge for me without getting into setting up, swapping out etc ...

And now I am eagerly awaiting your cover of Moonshine Freeze!

Troy I truly enjoy your writing!

Looking at that last video and seeing the other guitarist with a Fender Jazzmaster it looks like Kate has the same P90 as the Jazzmaster which would explain the sound.
Jazzmaster pickups are not P90s, though they look similar on the outside.

Thanks for clarifying that, that possibly explains why I've always thought a Jazzmaster sounds a bit tame to something like a LP goldtop P90, I always put it down to the wood!
Interesting article that!

Hot Hobner News !.

There are now THREE members of the Hobner Owners Club !

Very hard to believe I think you'll agree, but new members of the club are, quite literally, not queuing up around the block to join.

# 1.  We've got Kate Stables (aka... This is The Kit) as our honorary life member and president (Not Hofner President!) , which is fair enough to be honest, as anyone who is prepared to tour one of these guitars around is a very brave person indeed.

# 2.  Me !

And newest unaware member.............

# 3.  American Hillbilly Hobo !  (New Recruit and Probationary member)

American Hillbilly Hobo hasn't paid his subs but is in the club purely because of his dedication to all things Hobner. So, as membership secretary I say he's in !

Here he is with the wunderguitar in hand......

Praise enough as he does declare it plays "pretty nice".

If you watch the vid from the beginning, I can't say, as a bridge expert, his apricot/walnut ? home fashioned piece of sh#t bridge is doing it for me but from about 2 minutes 30 he can really rock that Hobner !

For a £50 archtop I reckon he's a shoe-in for Hobner immortality.

I've still got the Ebay and Gumtree alerts on for these and I'll fight you for them . Be aware that I set my automatic bidding limit to £2000 !

Another Hobner update !  :)  In which I have to apologise profusely to our Indian cousins :-[ .

Having stripped the Hobner down to it's component parts it's clearly evident that it is indeed "bound" around the body and f holes, in a creme plastic, which in an earlier post I thought was just creme paint ! So I'm very sorry to have besmirched the guitar building skills of India. That said, it's still pretty bloody rough !

So, the Hobners been in rehab of late as the cruddy black finish was truly horrible and not really the manufacturers finest hour. After a comprehensive ding repair program, rub down, repaint and lacquer it's now looking considerably better.

(https://s26.postimg.org/uuvgj2ket/DSC_0003a.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/uuvgj2ket/)

And with "The Ibanez"

(https://s26.postimg.org/6gx6bfnbp/DSC_0002.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/6gx6bfnbp/)

I've not painted a guitar before but it came out pretty well ! I've done plenty of cars though so not a novice but, all the same, I was pleased. Now resplendent in Ford Pepper Red available at auto shops near you no doubt with a slight pearlecent shimmer. The hardest part was keeping the Hobner logo on the body as it was obviously on black, but the whole front of the guitar had to be painted red before the black sunburst was reapplied so it was a bit of a masking nightmare to say the least !

The f holes caused no end of problems to mask properly. In the end it involved pushing half a car washing sponge into each hole, fiddling cardboard into the f holes which had to be held up against the underside of the top by the sponge to blank off the holes. Clear silicone sealer was then pumped on top of the card in the recess of the f hole to mask the binding. It worked OK though, once the paint was dry I just pushed the card covered in silicon back into the guitar to give a clean line and then fished it all back out.

I was going to fit volume and tone knobs but as you can see I haven't yet. I'm a bit undecided at the moment about this as I usually play with everything set to full blast on the guitar anyway ?? Whats the point????

Another nightmare was the pickup. I had to cut a hole at the base of the neck for it which wasn't so bad until I realised there was a cross brace running under that exact spot ! A bit of whittling soon sorted that out though. On the upside I now know what "Basswood" is ! In the guitar spec it says it's made of Basswood which I mentioned in an earlier post as I had no idea what it was. Well, it turns out that the term "Basswood" is Indian for "Plywood" and I've seen enough of it in my time to know what it looks like. Glad we've cleared that one up !

So, I've just whacked an Artec P90 on the neck and connected it directly to the socket.

That's all for now but I will update shortly !

Nice work!

I had been waiting for the next installment of this riveting serial.

I look forward to hearing it soon. (I'm inclined to agree that "on-board" controls are probably rather redundant).

(I'm inclined to agree that "on-board" controls are probably rather redundant).

Sometime in the future you may find that they are indeed quite useful. I especially use the volume knob to clean up the sound when needed. My clean setting on my amp is on the dirty side when the guitar volume is at 10, but rolling that down to 7'ish I get a nice clean sound.

Watch Joe Bonamassa tell you about it here:

Not much of a Hobner Update this time . Plenty of Kate Stables (out of This is The Kit) updates however with another live viewing and a Twitter conversation !!

Also, maybe, a fitting end to this thread ???  We'll see later!

Hobner Update.

The Hobner has now bedded in and settled down what with the new strings, a complete strip and repaint and it's playing better.  It's a whole world of difference to The Ibanez mind with it's clinical precision and cosy warm humbuckers. This thing is really RAW and hard to tame with a P90 on the neck. It'll wail like a banshee with feedback if you don't get it right and show up pretty much any flaw in playing technique. That said, for a £38 guitar, paint was about £12, Artec P90 and socket came in at under £8, D'Addario ECG23's at £12 and all in we are looking at about £70 . Best money I've spent in many a year.

You guys were right about the P90 and I'm glad I went that route. When you get the Hobner on the edge of breaking up with just a little distortion, to my ears it is perfect and what I was after from the very start of this thread. Ace advise.

Kate Stables Update.

Before they took off to the States this month they were playing in Bristol again but in a much larger venue at The Colston Hall. Celebrating 150 years of The Colston it was open from 4pm in the afternoon till 3am featuring about 40 different acts all for the princely sum of £13, so it would have been rude NOT to attend. This is The Kit were on at the more reasonable time of 10pm so it was also more daughter friendly. The X Factor was on so the wife stayed at home.

Unfortunately a less familiar encounter with Kate this time however the Hobner was sounding REALLY good through her familiar WEM amp and a full concert hall PA although I did note she was also not immune to the odd feedback issue !

Twitter Update.

Or, why you should never have a few drinks whilst on Twitter more like. Anyway, less said and make you're own mind up.

https://twitter.com/beendeep/status/919302746880299008 (https://twitter.com/beendeep/status/919302746880299008)

At least I got a reply !  Wowzers!  Amazing! . So very Kate. She could let me back her Hobner up with my Hobner any time she bloody well likes !  There is something satisfyingly rude about the word "Hobner".

A Fitting End to This Thread Update.

Or, I know you people would never let me get away with it. So I've just slapped up my own acoustic version of Moonshine Freeze loosely based on this performance by Kate .......About 8 minutes 50 seconds in.

  About 8.50 in

It can't be stressed enough how much  I DIDN'T want to do this ! 18 months after starting the BC here . I don't play publicly that much and NEVER sing. You'll have to forgive a few timing issues and singing issues but I thought the Hobner sounded OK.  It felt like it got better as I settled in. Kate makes it look so easy and I can assure you it isn't ! This was the second take.  I hope you're all satisfied now and you're ears bleed !!

Troy,

Wonderfully entertaining post, up to your normal high standards.

You did a great job performing Moonshine Freeze.  Got the Kate/This Is The Kit feel.

After reading the tweets ... have you commenced hunting for another Hobner to restore, pimp and offer to Kate ... what might that be worth (not just thinking monetary value  ;) )?  You can be her Hobner Guitar Tech   8)

As for THE END?

I say NO WAY ...

You are still alive, loving music and guitar ... as far as I can tell ... so this is just the old proverbial end of a beginning ...

More adventures lie ahead

And your playing and singing should be heard, at least here in JG Community ... with or without the Band.

And your story-telling is top drawer ...

So I await the next episode with eager anticipation

It's funny.

I think it's down to you guys Darrel and David I had the courage to just say, oh feck it,  and enter into the whole spirit. Throughout my ramblings you've been nothing less than encouraging and even though my "Moonshine Freeze" is a work in progress you've never failed to be 100% there (obviously through gritted teeth). Thanks for that and there is NO WAY I would have put it out there where it not for you two ! A fitting end to this thread I think.

It's been a laugh for me and no doubt we'll meet on other threads, but I'm signing out from this one for the time being unless I get to finally marry Kate. At which point I will gladly update this thread and invite you to the wedding !

Cheers

SHOCK AND OUTRAGE ON THE UK'S ONLY DEDICATED HOBNER THREAD

Kate Stables (aka This is the Kit) Claims her Hobner is made of a "cardboard-y material"  !!!!!!!!!!    Surely this is an insult to cardboard !

This is the first time I've seen her talk about her Hobner and retells the story I told (scooped !) you all on this thread some time ago about it's bootsale heritage.

Read and listen along to the interview here.....

Cardboard-y ! How dare she ! The nerve of the woman denigrating my fine handcrafted (in India) instrument. That's her off the Christmas card list.

On a sidenote I'm now bass-ing with another band.  Here we are playing a sell out show in someones front room.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pcLtsuEjPHtaswqmmJNf3Byz_V0Kg4Kt/view?usp=sharing

It's all a bit bluegrass and the BLACK SABBATH Yamaha is looking a little out of place here I think so, me being me, I've sort of gone and bought a different bass guitar.

I'll update with pics when it arrives as you wouldn't have heard of this one either ! A few clues to be going on with...... It's Dutch and about as old as I am. It will be a miracle if it's playable !

So........ It's been a while !  Performance video ahead though !

And yet another waif and stray gets added to the collection.... I was telling my mate Jonathan (lead singer in an earlier video I posted) about my proclivity for the unsung hero. If there was a dog, rabbit, hamster etc with a missing ear left at the local re homing center I'd be the sucker that would have to take it home and run up thousands in vets bills (although I know a vet who might do "mates rates" !)

This particular "dog" is called Edmond and is a Princess. It's 54 years old and was kept in a loft in Southampton unfed and unwatered for as long as the present owner could remember. The height of cruelty !  Here she is with the (now) legendary Hobner !

An Egmond Princess Bass !  Built in Eindhoven by the finest Dutch luthiers in 1964, it's older than I am ! . Ebay, purchase price £68

I collected it from Southampton, got it home and just plugged it in after god knows how many years and it sounded............ absolutely sh1te ! Truly awful.

The strings were shot so put on some Thomastik flatwounds. These were £45 ! Almost as much as the guitar but at the time I didn't realise a few things. One thing being it's a SHORT SCALE bass, and no, it doesn't look like it. The distance from the bridge to the zero fret ( ala Hobner) is a miniscule 30" but I needed medium scale strings due to the fact they travel on quite a way to the tailpiece. All very complicated and because of lower demand, pricier ! That said, the new strings are lovely. Neck and Bridge pickups (also fitted to similar era Hofners (not Hobners !)) Volume and Tone for each and neither worked properly but a strip out of all the electrics and a generous squirt of WD contact cleaner and they all worked like new ! I've had to fit a different bridge for the time being as the old one needs a bit of work, but as I have about 23 bridges in stock it wasn't much trouble to find one that worked !

The neck is like a log. It's massive ! No "thumb overs" on this baby and is attached to the body by one adjustable screw which tensions a great big F Off spring twixt neck and body to compensate for string tension. And no, the system doesn't really work. The strings are either flat on the neck or so high above it's unplayable and oh, also, someone has sheared off the truss rod end so that can't be adjusted at all. I think that sums up all the bad news.

The good news. It looks fantastic, note the odd lower f-hole which I presume is to let out more "sound" ?? No idea, but the pick guard is missing. It does sound terrific now, I'm not joking about this, it really does. I love it's hollowy tone and being a short scale it does have a unique sound.

But........  it is still a handful to play at the moment and nowhere near as easy as my Black Sabbath Yamaha. As an aside, the wife is not happy at all (see previous posts) and demanded a "one in" - "one out" deal. I have now hidden the Yamaha under the bed.

This guy loves his Princess so there are at least two of us !  http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2017/06/22/old-school-1964-egmond-princess-bass/ (http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2017/06/22/old-school-1964-egmond-princess-bass/)

Anyway, it didn't stop me giving the Princess a run out !

Here we are at a local acoustic cafe...

The same Foggy Mountain as in the sell out front room gig.  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ElQr92hzLpPZOSjj0o2TawuRjlQCLezJ/view?usp=sharing

900 Miles https://drive.google.com/file/d/1g8LrUEaJELgsrl4_3osElO38vbLIuZJV/view?usp=sharing

And we backed up the fiddle players lad with this. https://drive.google.com/file/d/16otzNkcNwKoesWp620N2SMRmRtarIPXZ/view?usp=sharing

I'm going to try and work the Hobner into this somehow !

If only Hobner made a Bass.  :'(

I think what you've done is ace!!!! Looks a lovely mature (old) piece of history, I actually know the brand well having grown up with one of their guitars! It was a Rossetti/Egmont Lucky7, bit like a Gibson ES125, if you can find one they are a lovely guitar!
A great enthusiasts site and one in use:

http://www.egmond.se/egmond_se_History.html

I also have 'rescued' a lovely old (1970) acoustic in the week, I found a K550 (Gibson dove copy) made for the Kay catalogs I think in Japan; it was filthy dirty and had no strings - I fleeced them of it for £10!!!
It scrubbed up well and with some old strings sounds nice; I've ordered some Silk and steel strings for it to avoid over stressing the neck, and yes we are in love ;)

Welcome back, Troy the Guitar Rescuer.

Love what you do and reading all about the trials and tribulations you overcome to bring these instruments back to life.

But mostly what I loved about this post was the three videos.  The songs were well played, sound pretty good and a video that captured the vibe. Wonderful.

Now what I am missing ....

The moment in the first instrumental when all paused, muted and fell on their knees in homage to the resurrected bass, while you ripped through a middle 8 bass solo.

Can't do nothing about that now.

But the next can be remedied.

These tracks were great and need to be shared more broadly. Soooooo.....

Either you post them on the AVOYP board so more people can enjoy the music, or I may post up on the Just chatting board to share how much I enjoyed your band, and direct more folk to check out your Road Case.  That said, all regulars here ought to have read your Road Case, from the start.

Lastly, Dream Catch Me sure did move me. What a performance.  The lad sings like a star. I wondered if this was an original.  Quick Google took me to a version of the original.  I was playing all the videos for my wife and our reaction on hearing the original was the same ... we prefer yours!!

Thanks for sharing with us.

Hey Guys !

It has been a while, but it's nice to come back with quite a big update on stuff that has been going on all in one lump just to try and keep it semi-interesting !

Yes Darrell, I have seen the Egmond site you mention and am very impressed indeed that you knew about them. I usually get a lot of blank faces when talking to other guitarists about my chosen (fate ?) brands !  But with the Princess I'm in good company as in their early days both Brian May and Paul McCartney had Egmonds (until they could afford proper playable instruments that worked obviously !)

Realistically, most Egmonds will have been used as firewood. It wasn't expensive when new and is not expensive now despite it's "vintage" credentials. This bass is the only guitar I know where you can adjust the action actually between songs, or during, if you're brave. All you need to do is put your knee into the back of it at the neck/body joint and pull the neck back to lower the action or push it away from you to increase it !  It creaks and groans a lot but is effective !

I wish I'd taken a picture of the mechanism when it was apart to show you as the neck has a pivot point where it meets the body and dependent on how you adjust the single screw holding the neck to body it alters the angle of the neck against a great big spring ! Fine adjustment is then taken care of by the "knee in the back" technique. In theory this is a truly marvelous innovation that the likes of Gibson should have adopted years ago. The fact they didn't tells you all you really need to know ! It's awful.

From here I haven't decided where to go really. The truss rod is snapped so I may be brave and have a go at my first fingerboard removal to replace it, after which I can just remove the spring and shim the neck to the desired fixed action. The jury is out however as nobody apart from me gives a monkeys as long as I can play the damned thing to an acceptable standard !

I like the look of your Kay as it's exactly the sort of thing I'd give a home too ! I nearly bought a Kiso Suzuki Hummingbird which was not dissimilar . It does look pretty good now but what are those screws on the bridge for ? Has it come off and someone screwed it back on ? They are not the prettiest !

As for performing a middle 8 Bass solo David I can think of nothing worse ! I hate up there own ar5es bassists who believe they should be the star of the show. They really do need to learn that a bass is an instrument that enhances the overall sound without ever being overly intrusive (all IMHO)  ;D .

Dream Catch Me was a Newton Faulkner song which the fiddle players lad wanted to do and he is pretty good ! He's only 11 I think but can certainly hold a tune. (Thanks for the kind comments). I was a little worried about the Egmond and feedback but we just plugged it into the desk and it behaved perfectly ! The Yamaha was on standby just in case though.

The "Acoustic Cafe" is soon to be moving from the local village hall to a pub ! Best news ever !  I'm guessing the playing standard will drop dramatically as the number of pints consumed increases. I'm looking forward to this very much.

So, over the next month or so I'll be learning more songs on the Egmond to support the band as we're playing again in January I think and Jonathan has a Christmas party, so we're also trying to cram in six new Christmassy tunes learn't on The Hobner (unplugged) for that.  For someone that can remember the chords quite easily but never in the correct order this will be a challenge !

Have a good Christmas all and I'll catch up in the New Year.

Haha how strange, I had a Suzuki Hummingbird copy years ago, I couldn’t get on with how narrow the neck was, obviously made for very small people ;)

Troy,

You are a treat.

OK, fair enough no bass solos ...

But I did notice how you conveniently ducked the issue of posting your videos over in AVOYP.  That Dream song is most definitely worth sharing more broadly.

And it has the added side effect of helping to keep me humble ... now I can say I know at least one eleven year old who already sings way better than I do ... has much more hair as well ... at least I have a beard and shall maintain that advantage for a few years yet.

Look forward to more tales and tunes in the New Year

Wishing you and yours a most blessed Christmas and New Year !!

How much does one get paid for a 1st page hit on the Googly net ? A squillion at the least ? I'd really like to retire soon if that's possible !

Good news. I am now bringing more traffic to this site than Justin could have ever imagined ! (increase your bandwidth baby, and pay me in bitcoins !)

If you happen to search for "This is the Kit" and "Hobner" on the Google (I admit that this is very unlikely to be anyone's search terms...... ever........., BUT !) it does see our thread on the first page !

I'm definitely on the case now, and will endeavor to bring this full circle where the song that started me off 18 months ago ("Magic Spell" by This Is The Kit) is reproduced in full video by my good self with my very own Hobner !

If it sounds anything like a 1/4 of The Stables talent I'd be pleased

My Hobner does have a quite a badly twisted neck so it will be horribly out of tune ! (I'm guessing like most of them!) How she can play and tune a Hobner is beyond me as I find it incredibly difficult !

Well Troy, it is a great song.  Good one to exercise solid rhythm playing with that light palm mute in play throughout.  Have fun learning it and look forward to checking it out soon ...

Not only has this been an interesting and (dare one say it) amusing thread but I have been introduced to a band I'd never heard of before - always a bonus.

I love Kate's voice and owe you a debt of gratitude for making me aware of her.

So This is Christmas, which makes it a HO! HO! HO! with a HOBNER Time Of Year !      (live, unplugged!, and acapella !)

This is what it's all about !  Find a sh1t guitar (I didn't with the Export Quality Hobner obviously !) (tick), find some very good friends (tick), add a sh1t load of Thatchers Cheddar Valley Cider (very BIG tick) and see what transpires...............

Shakin Stevens doesn't really have much to worry about here. It all goes completely tits up and then........we think we've recovered...........but that mandolin solo just isn't going to happen.......tits up again, Nick goes for grabbing more cider mid song, laughs all round and plough on ! The Hobner nails the key change (I wish !) and back to the bar.  Merry Christmas one and all ! Don't get hung up on perfecting every note as sometimes it's much more fun when it all goes a little bit wrong  (well, the audience in the mirror seemed to like it !) ...........So.......Pick up your cardboard Hobner and Rock On !

And have a Happy Hobner New Year !

Please find enclosed my membership application. I paid £16 for my green Hobner from a car boot sale 3 years ago it came with a soft case. It differs from Kate's as it has a tombstone style headstock.

I have a Hobner that I don't play. It doesn't stay in tune, and the action is abnormally high. I don't have the patience to install new tuners and bridge.

If somebody wants it, let me know.
