Title: 007 August Into the Mystic cover
Post by: embishop on August 21, 2017, 08:27:33 pm
This is one of my all time favorite songs. I started learning a cool arrangement a few years ago but never quite got the more complicated bits. I've wanted to finish learning it so thought this would be a good one to share this month so I'd have to learn it! Not perfect yet, but better.

https://soundcloud.com/user-515453056/into-the-mystic/s-QVEMH

A couple things I realized while working on this song -

When Justin says practice makes permanent that is oh so correct. That also ties in with his comments about using visualization, practicing without a guitar. Because I have been 'practicing', in my head, a very poor version of the sax solo for a few years now, and I made it pretty permanent! Practicing with a metronome now, also per Justin's advice, is how I finally learned the guitar transcription of the sax solo. So, I've definitely learned a lot from Justin for this song.

I'm playing in dropped D tuning, key of D, capo 1 (so Eb, same as original).

Finally, no excuses for the voice, I'm not a singer, it's the best I can do!

Love the sounds of chords and rhythms on that one, embishop. And the singing didn't sound as best as you pre-framed it. Though vocal level quite low relative to the guitar.

Good job.

Overall I have to say I like it. I'm a big fan of what I'll call slap muting that you're using (listen to Jack Johnson's Times Like These). The vocals didn't sound bad - just needed a bit more boost. This is sooo different than the Van Morrison version I'm having trouble getting comfortable with it. It's like somebody took a memory and painted it a different color. I'll have to let this sink in a couple of days but I think I'll end up liking this version too. Nice job sorting this out.

Thanks DavidP. I turned the vocals down intentionally lol. Separate guitar and vocal tracks as I can't sing and play that beat.

Thanks for commenting Nosugrof.  "It's like somebody took a memory and painted it a different color." That's a wonderful description. I learned this arrangement because when I heard it I loved it! although of course not sure how close I got to the version I learned from. I like when the guitar is arranged to try to bring in the other instruments.

:-)

I'd say turn up the vocal regardless of what you think of your own voice.  I think regardless I'd prefer that to straining to hear the vocal.

And in this community I have experienced loads of empathy and understanding for people (like myself) attempting to sing, after all this is primarily about guitar playing and nobody expects anybody singing here to be like <insert name of favorite, most highly regarded vocalist here>.

Heck, people here don't expect people to be playing like <insert name of favorite, most highly regarded guitarist here>, the site is all about learning, fun and improvement ... though some people (won't mention names  ;) ) play some songs a lot more like Eric Clapton does than some other people do  ;D

I loved it! Beautiful playing. Easy to listen to.

I really like your voice. It's beautiful and pure. You sing from the heart and have a lovely soft tone. I'll hit the like button later. I can't do it from my phone.

I enjoyed it too. I agree that your voice is fine. Don't be afraid to sing and turn up the volume. It's a very pleasant voice. Your playing sounded great to me. It sounds to me that you are at a much higher level of training/learning than I on your guitar skills. Good job!

Thanks pkboo3. I've been playing for about 42 of my 53 years and based on that I should be much much much better than I am! Lol I'm actually at a point where I'm having lots of fun learning and filling in some of the gaps for what I don't know, and not getting too frustrated by the things I don't know. Too many other stressors in life, music should be a de-stressor :)

This is also one of my favourite songs of all time. I think you sing it very well - particularly the difficult bits (like 'i wanna rock your gypsy soul'). As others have mentioned I think your vocal is too low - so as Van would say 'turn it up!'. Your guitar work sounds good but I have listened to it a few times now and it seems to me that Garageband is distorting your playing a little - like it is trying to autotune it. Was that an intentional effect - I don't think it is necessary. But overall really liked your interpretation.

No, it was not intentional, I was trying to get rid of it as it started out much worse. It's something in there on recording, not an effect I added afterwards. I need to figure out more about GarageBand than just pressing the record button!

I only started using Garageband on my iphone a couple of weeks ago - so I'm a complete beginner. But I'm wondering did you choose voice rather than instrument on the audio recorder selection? With the instrument selection you can choose acoustic guitar and then you have further selections like nice room or dreamy chorus etc.. after that.

I'm not sure what I did! I will hopefully figure it out next time I try recording. Thanks for your input.

Emb,
David is so right in what he says - all of us (well most of us) are singing because we can't have someone else do it for us, so don't be afraid to turn up the volume on your vocals, which were fine by the way. Guitar playing was nice and tight - your strumming is sharp and accurate. Not sure what would cause the distortion in GB, but it must be related to doing it on a phone cos I've never had it happen on a desktop.
Nice job - next time let's hear your voice more balanced with the guitar.

One of my favourite songs too from one of my favourite albums ...
I totally understand Nosugrof's lovely description yet I like this arrangement a lot.
Did you play and sing together or separately?
The playing is good overall,  with some careful slow take-it-apart then put-it-back-together work you could iron out the wrinkles, muted notes etc.
I agree with others ... get your voice up and out!
Nice one.

Thanks lots Close2u. I played and sang separately. I've tried to sing and play this one at the same time but I can't keep the beat. I know there's some places that require work still, and it's been very helpful slowing it down and working on it that way. I'd like to be able to play and sing this one together so maybe I'll work on  small sections for that too.

I think your vocal works real well and nearly all is in tune - the actual tone is good too, so don't be shy with it- singsing is a lot confidence.

There's something funny with the guitar sometimes like you hit a tape wobble which is confusing me cos I don;'t know how ur doing it - I couldn't if I tried! (example at 2:05)

Rhythm is solid and overall it works real well :) J

Thanks for listening and commenting, Justin, your feedback is really appreciated! I don't know what is happening with the guitar wobble as you say, something funny on the recording that I couldn't figure out how to get rid of on the set up. Kontenda noted it too.

Hi Embishop.

It seems the video is no longer on soundcloud. Can you still access it?

Hi Barend, the link in my post still works for me (audio clip, not video). I find on SoundCloud that it still takes a couple seconds to play after I hit the play button. Maybe try giving it a couple seconds to start.

Does anyone know the strumming pattern for this, there's a few different ones out there on the net.  Closest I think is d u d u u u  dudu , as a mere beginner its a bit complicated when each stroke isn't numbered 1-4 or 1-8

I learned this one from a tutorial at https://www.kirbysguitarlessons.com/van-morrison-song-lyrics.html , if that's helpful to you at all.

Definitely agree you should turn up the vocals. They sound really good. I'm not the biggest van Morrison fan, but liked your version a lot.

Thank you @embishop and whomever resurrected this thread. Wow, just wow. I teleported into the mystic, which is not something I normally do this early in the morning. Very inspirational. I teared up a bit. Great cover, done right, true and yet unique.

Thanks Clint. I've got to put this one back into my current playing catalogue, I forgot how much I liked the arrangement.
