Title: Tosh's (phx1973) roadcase
Post by: phx1973 on May 06, 2017, 10:21:44 pm
Hi all,

I have been on this site just about as long as I've been learning guitar- almost three years. My first post here was in September of 2014, right around the time I started the beginners course. I have since finished that and am now making my way through the intermediate course. I hope to finish that and then move on to the blues courses after that. Having moved halfway across the country in my early 40s and leaving all my family and friends behind, I figured learning an instrument would be a fun and productive activity in my spare time. I'm a financial director for the local university, and am married with three kids ages one through 10. So who am I kidding, there is no spare time! LOL.

Okay, onto the fun stuff - all the money I have spent in the last three years, ha ha.

My First guitar was a New Fender Standard MIM Telecaster. This is still my favorite guitar. I just love the way it feels and sounds. I have swapped out the pick ups for Seymour Duncan mini humbuckers - The next pick up is a vintage stack in the bridge pick up is a little 59. I think they sound great. Although they've added some richness to the tone I think it still has quite a bit of that tele twang.

About a year later I bought my next guitar used. It's a 2011 Gibson Les Paul Junior with one P90 pick up in the bridge. A totally different animal but I love this guitar too.

Enter guitar number three, which I have only had for a couple months now. A G&L Fallout (tribute model). P90 neck pickup and a full humbucker in the bridge. Plus a coil tap in the bridge for single coil tones.

My wife recently bought me a nice three guitar stand to hold them all. I'm afraid this is her way of telling me I am done buying guitars for a while. Ha ha!

I started out with a Fender Mustang II amp. But as Justin said would happen I soon got the itch for a tube amp. Per his recommendation I went with the Fender blues Junior. I got the lacquered tweed model, which has a Jensen speaker in it that I think sounds a lot better. And that tweet covering is just awesome.

I've also started putting together a pedal board. I want to add a compression pedal and a looper, then I should be good for a while.

That's a nice rig, man.

But you probably need another guitar.

Some people just can't make up their mind!

So first I bought a Fender Bassbreaker 15 about 6 months ago; (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170521/11a10dcee013ec96f8aae866efed6739.jpg)then, some on the forum might remember my post about returning it before the Guitar Center 45 days timeline ended, and taking a Blues Junior instead.

Well, it didn't take very long to realize that wasn't the right move, at least for my musical style. I really started to miss it after a while and also started to hate the gain sound on the Blues Junior, or lack thereof. So I traded it for yet another Bassbreaker 15 during Guitar Center's recent trade-in promotion. I'm looking forward to trying out the effects loop too, as I know some have had issues with it. Really hope it works properly! So far loving this amp though. Happy reunion to me. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170521/8df8f922e7a4fc3bf7320d545fae889a.jpg)

Title: Possible band audition upcoming
Post by: phx1973 on June 07, 2017, 09:11:57 pm
Update - For a while now I have been wanting somebody to play with; not necessarily a band situation, though that would probably be the ultimate goal. Anyway, I found an online post of somebody from my city looking to start a band. He stated similar musical styles to mine and that he was looking basically for all the pieces to form a band, in which he would play lead guitar. Looking for a singer, bassist, drummer, and rhythm guitar player. It seemed legit and the post was fairly recent so I sent him a text message. Turns out he now has all the pieces together except for a rhythm guitar player - having hired a drummer, bassist, and singer. He invited me to come practice with them -- so I guess a "sort of" audition. But I appreciated that he made it very informal sounding, probably for my benefit. Here are my concerns:

- Am I really good enough, being just midway through Justin's IM course? Based on the genre, It sounds like the kind of stuff I mainly play for fun anyway. I've got down the minor pentatonic, major scale, open chords, power chords, E-shape and A-shape major barre chords. But obviously there is a lot I don't know.

- I wouldn't feel at all comfortable just "jamming" with somebody. Don't understand music theory, keys, etc. If I rehearsed a song or helped write a song that's another thing. But it makes me worry about just showing up for a jam session that I'll look like a fool.

Age: I get the impression these are young whipper snappers (haha). This is a college town and I have reason to believe they are all around that age. Whereas I am a 44 year old professor, husband, father, etc. Obviously very different stage of life. That in itself makes me a little uncomfortable, but I figure it's worth taking a shot.

I should mention this isn't a done deal. He is going to check with the other members.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my story of excitement and anxiety rolled into one. haha. Thoughts, similar experiences? How do I even prepare for such a meeting/audition.

If the rest of the band accepts, go with it.
My guess is that you are plenty prepared for a position as rythm guitarist and playing in a band is a great way to evolve as a musician.
When playing music together you will realize that age doesn't matter. But, it can become an issue when putting down the instruments. But, try it out. No matter which way it goes you learn a lot.

Yes, 5 guitars. My wife says I'm done buying guitars, but she says that often. haha.

No, I didn't join the band. Actually never even met with them. They meet kind of far from me. But the bigger thing is that I just thought it wasn't the right move for my stage of life right now. I'm working crazy hours, 3 small kids including a baby, and finding time to even practice by myself regularly is tough enough -- the idea of mixing in band practice, etc., started to stress me out. I still want to do it, either with these guys or somebody else -- just not right this moment.

The other thing on my mind regarding the band was that it would be great to keep progressing on my own. I'm still not very good at barre chords and I think my rhythm needs work still. Thank you for asking!

Well, the subject line essentially says it all. My wife and I (and 3 kids) are building a house, assuming we can sell our current house. It's a semi-custom home, meaning we get to be involved in the design to an extent (choosing paint colors, certain kitchen aspects, etc). It is supposed to be complete in December. We don't have a contract on it yet, as we want to get into a contract selling our house first. But things are looking good. Very exciting!

It's going to have a large (30 foot) enclosed patio (what we call a 3 seasons room). Already envisioning me and my acoustic guitar in there :-)

But here is the question for the forum members. For the first time I will have my own office (which I am also considering my guitar room). It's not huge (10 x 12) and will have my desk/computer stuff, maybe a dresser / book shelves. Other than that I'm thinking about how to set this up for my guitar stuff. Since it's "semi-custom" I wondered about talking to the builder about creating something specifically for guitar. Like maybe having them do something on the walls specifically for my guitars. Of course, I could just put hooks on the wall after moving in (thinking of the way David P's room looks from his videos).

Anyway have any thoughts or suggestions? My current inventory:

-My Taylor 214CE DLX acoustic
-my 3 electrics (Tele, G&L Fallout, and Les Paul Junior)
-Blues Junior Amp, and pedalboard

Considering adding:

-a good chair for guitar playing. not sure what to consider.
-a microphone, music stand, possibly an acoustic amp, and maybe a second acoustic or a resonator

Any thoughts, either design wise of the actual room, or related to my thoughts of new purchases? It's going to be great to have a room that is all mine, even if it is not a huge area! LOL.

Here’s a pic of the house in construction mode. 2nd floor just went up this week. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200829/f7dc166eb5521600a4e10e962e8d35f6.jpg)

Nice looking home.

Have the carpenters put blocking inbetween the studs as backing to screw
Hercules Guitar hangers so you have more than just the studs to screw the
hangers to.

Have the electrician run the wiring for ceiling mounted monitor speakers.

Have the whole room insulated, walls, ceilings and floors even if it's just regular
insulation. Your wife will thank you when you go throw your heavy metal faze. ;)

Have a humidifiers/dehumidifier installed with the heating/cooling system.
The more you can do when the house is under construction the less it will cost.

What a great opportunity Tosh. Stitch is on the money with his advise.

As well as insulating the wall cavities and ceiling, you might like to look into acoustic wall treatments. It's a complex topic; some relatively simple suggestions, others complex. There will be folk in the community who know a great deal about it.

Simple things, like a thick carpet on the floor and curtains that have lots of folds can soften hard surfaces and improve the room ambiance.

So happy for you.

Congratulations on the new probable home and your new den!!  :) Those 3 season rooms are awesome. (Grandparents house had one and it was my favorite place to go to drink coffee/whatever & wake up.)

I say build a secret passage in your new home. 😉 No one ever outgrows secret passages hidden behind a mirror or bookcase. 😁

I'm kidding, but if I could, I'd really build one into a house if given the opportunity and it didn't cost a fortune.... because i'm a giant nerd. lol. With 2 kids it wouldn't be much of a secret passage after they showed all their friends. LOL!

Take care!
Becky

Comgrats on your new home, so jealous but also very happy for you! Having an extra music room? Double jealous!

I think some great suggestions has been made already, one more I would perhaps suggest is if you have a set location for your amp inside your head - maybe to run a pair of conduits for media cables between point A where your amp is and point B where you want to play. So in case there is some distance between amp and guitar you don't need 3m long cables tangled on a floor but just a short one plugging into the socket in the wall on both sides.

Same perhaps with any other cables you need for your music playing? I don't know what gear you have so I don't know cables you need.

If you want more DIY and rough version just run a pair of conduits (pair for future expansion and to have sound and media cables separate to avoid any disturbances on a signal) with empty backboxes in the wall and brush sockets on top - if it's a straight run without many turns you can pull in and out some cabling depending on your need. If you want nicer finish you can get a customised AV plate with whatever you like inside on both ends to simply plug and play your kit on both sides (usb, hdmi, jack, all sorts of stuff).

Hey Tosh. Just by chance I recorded an old Johnny Cash concert that was on TV at the weekend and am watching it tonight. I’d never noticed before but he does a lot of strumming down the neck. If you copy that you’ll wear the ‘CASH’ off your new guitar!

Thanks to everybody for commenting on the Cash guitar in my other thread. That conversation helped me to process the thoughts and opinions I was already having.

I ultimately decided to return this t for two reasons:

1) shape - I found the dreadnought a bit unwieldy and uncomfortable, so that likely was a lot of the problem

2) tone - there was a weird plasticky sound. It would be fine for a $200 guitar. But for the price I just found it difficult to justify

I found this, for an even exchange and loved it almost instantly!
Martin 000-X2E

It’s still a Martin X series (Made in Mexico) but has significant improvements in its specs over the Cash guitar that really come through when playing it:

Solid Sitka Spruce top - The Cash was all laminate

The top also has a hand rubbed finish. Nice and thin, very minimalistic. They say the color will nicely darken over time to match the shade of the back and sides. Will be interesting to see if that’s true

Bridge, fingerboard and neck on the new 000 are made of hardwood. They call it “select hardwood”, which I think just means “undetermined”. The Cash had richlite for all. The neck was noticeably heavier with the richlite, so this seems like another good upgrade. None of this would matter of it didn’t sound and feel better, but it does. I’m a happy guy!

Here are some pics.

Nice one Tosh, happy NGD that’s a size I like too the OOO size is a great compromise if you don’t like the size of a Dreadnought. The HPL guitar I linked to is more like the right price for that construction,Martin guitars to an extent, especially the lower end models are well and truly overpriced! Looking forward to hearing it!

Melody Music Shop in Bloomington. The sole remaining guitar store in B-Town, as Vance closed down earlier this year. I have bought guitars at Guitar Center in Greenwood too.

It was sad to see Vance close.  I bought my Taylor there during the 'going out of business sale'.  MMS carries a good inventory.  Bought my G&L ASAT Classic Bluesboy Tribute second hand at the GC in Greenwood.

Sweet guitar!

Having several guitars myself, I love how they give you a different kind of inspiration and playing style every time. Even though I prefered one over the other some times, you'll be surprised how hard to compare they become after a while when it comes to emotional value. :D

Keep sharing the good(nes)s :D

The new house is done and we are all moved in. Whoop whoop! Now I can get back to the important things in life...like guitar, of course. I can see my wife peering at me from across the room. As if she knows I’m typing this. Haha.

Anyway, just thought I’d share.

On the guitar front, since this is a roadcase, after all: I do have a few guitar goals for 2021, inspired by Batwoman, and others:

1) I would really like to finish the Intermediate Method (starting back at foundation I)

2) continue to build my busking / farmers market repertoire - though who knows if I’ll actually get any public playing until the pandemic really gets under control. Safety first, right?

I see my ultimate playlist consisting of a lot of the following:

Johnny Cash
Beatles
CCR
Bob Dylan
John Prine
Willie Nelson

3) write and record at least 3 new original songs

Wow a whooping house indeed, congratulations Tosh, hope you will apend there many happy years. I remember you were looking for some suggestions for your music room and what can you do during construction phase to make your life easier once you move in - what did you end up.with eventually unless you are still preping up interior bits?

I am really keen to see your progress this year and I hope there will be some birds singing in the background while you are jamming on your porch :))

Tosh, that's wonderful news.

Wish you and your family happy living in your new home. When you get time would love some photos of that planned music room.

Goals and plans for the year look great; wish you well on those.

Fine set of artists from whom you'll draw your repertoire.

I guess selecting songs for busking is tricky as you don't necessarily know who the audience may be. I'd figure then that you need songs that are "classic" and likely well known to many or really catchy to grab people's attentions.

Look forward to hearing more from you repertoire and original songs.

Now settled in the new house. As so many of you kind men and women have inquired as to how my music room, came along, I thought I'd finally share some pics. My home office / music room is fairly small, but works well for me. And best of all, it's all mine, whereas the basement in the old house was a much larger space but had to be fought with the kids over TV / video game time  ;)

The guitar hanger I just received. It was a hand built custom order whiskey barrel 3-guitar stave. I ordered it from https://goodwooddesignco.com/ if you are interested. It's stunning in person and in my opinion the guitars on the wall really make the room. I also have my amp (Blues Junior IV), pedals, and stereo in here. Some of you may remember the pedalboard that I posted about building from scratch with my dad a couple summers ago in his wood shop. Here it finally is, stained and all. I now wish we had made it a bit bigger, but it works!

Still need to do a bit of decorating, but the bones are good! There really is nothing like building a new home from the ground up. It's been an amazing experience. maybe sometime i'll send pics of the whole house if there is interest. just don't want to bore people :-)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210214/00ca53b92a7adba1ed77766fb4942391.jpg)

Looks fabulous, love the layout. Definitely no finer way to decorate a wall than with guitars.

Pedal board looks great. So maybe a small pedal board for the acoustic, solo, Man In Black gig. And gives you a good reason to build a second pedal board for rocking out with the tele.

I'm with your lad ... double thumbs up.

I'm with Maggie and Adrian ... would love to see more pictures of the house ... inside outside USA

Music room/office looks great Tosh. Brilliant to have your ‘own space’.
The guitars look great on the wall. Judging by the window position your guitars look to be on an internal wall so all good. Apart from obviously making sure they are secure, I’ve read you should never hang guitars on the inside of an external wall as the temperature can fluctuate and depending on the level of insulation and ventilation, condensation can form.

Now, this is a good look!
I realise I've been approaching the whole concept of guitar storage from the wrong angle...literally.
Side on to maximise number of guitars in a line is not the way to go.
Width-wise is so much better!  :)
(Now, how to persuade the other person occupying the house to give up some real estate?)

Congrats on your office/practice space. Looking at those pictures gave me an idea on what to do with my pedals etc. Now they're lying around sort of here and there, but no longer!

You gave me a great idea!

Keep it going and good luck!

Sounds great, Tosh, that the neighbourhood will be able to cash in on having a player at the party.

The image isn't showing up for me.
Now can you see it?

Yup, now I can see one image but the post still seems to have another in it that I can't see.

Quite agree with the marketing, though might swap out the cookies  ;)

But cookies seem to be a thing ... Corporate to Cupcakes?

While chatting, got all excited to see a notification from your channel on my YT, only to be denied by "private video"  :'(

I've just spent the last 20 minutes or so reading this thread and thoroughly enjoyed doing so. It's a belter of a thread. Long may it continue.
