Title: 001 Feb 2017 Rossco01 - Wonderful Tonight
Post by: Rossco01 on January 30, 2017, 08:14:41 pm
So to keep the ball rolling on the competition here is my entry. Sorry Justin kept it simple and straight forward this month (although I find it very challenging to get a clean fingerstyle recording).

Just a clean acoustic recording with a hint of reverb (and the very slight whine of a dog in one spot - sorry!).

Very mellow version rossco
Almost plaintive
Good vibes n all that
 :)
A few tempo wobbles ... although maybe deliberate as you're singing about being tired, drunk and having an aching head around about then ha ha
Mood music, changes that fit the story!
 ;)
For future versions, if you want to develop this song, and enhance the accompaniment you could look to fingerpick some of the melody lines within the chords between vocal sections. It's a really good fingerstyle exercise, finding those melody notes and adding the embellishments.

Thanks Chix and thanks Close.

You wouldnt believe how long it took me to get a clean take...ill take your suggestion for that little tempo wobble at the end! And of course your good advice on how I can improve things.

You made the song look really easy. Well done, Rossco! 👍

The competition is going to be fierce 😶

good job!

The timing of the different sections coming together doesn't always fit in the tempo but it doesn't bother me too much.

playing is going great. Quite an accurate picking pattern, a lot better than the random stuff I usually throw in :)

in the singing you tend to sing some notes longer but you put yourself into trouble trying to keep the pitch

I know it's your style to prolong some syllables; I recall from other recordings.
It gives a real personal flair. Most of it is very nice and sweet though so don't stare at that remark :)

You're getting better and better, if you keep doing what you're dong, you'll be doing this all on auto pilot soon!

Another cool entry for the compo!

Funny, very funny Lieven, I laughed so much I couldn't hear Rossco's singing :)

Rossco your dog was contributing some backing vocals, though I don't think collaborations are allowed  ;)

Singing and fingerpicking ... very impressed. Liked the mellow, plaintive sound and most of all I love your acoustic take on this song. Thankyou.

Not one of my favourite songs but liked your version. Very impressed you can fingerpick and sing at the same time. So much to learn so little time.

Cheers guys and I really appreciate the feedback. Hopefully others will see the songs don't have to be complicated to take part....for this month you might as well just post you AVOYP in this section rather than the normal one  :D This is just as it's written in the BSB. Appreciate it's finger picked but I've been playing a few years so I have to be challenged a bit.

Hehe,

very nice Rossco.

Just learned from this competition via the Newsletter.
Awesome Idea. Maybe I'll have a go at it to, using a simple Belgian local song, which I came to love recently.

It's been 8 months since my last recording.
Band practice has taken up all my time, not much time left for anything else than rehearsing the band songs and learning the solo's...

It's going great though, and I'm having so much fun actually playing lead guitar in a 7 man band ... Who would have thought ...

Anyway, Good Job and awesome initiative!

regards,
de_conne

Very nice contribution Rossco! Even if you keep it simple, I know it isn't easy to play and sing and sound this good.

Thanks guys for the all positive feedback and support. If I can post something up then I'm sure you can! Bear in mind Justin will undoubtedly take into account level and experience in his judging and many of you have posted great stuff in the AVOYP section.

Really nice mate. Simple and relaxed, no theatrics - solid picking and a nice light vocal with a good tone.

My only nit-pick is perhaps the vocal is just a little too light, the first verse you sound nervous which for me happens when I sing too quietly. Your voice is very pleasant so if that's the case, no need :)

Very nice Rossco.  Nothing wrong with simple when it's done this well :)

Hey Rossco

That's pretty cool picking lad. Vocals soft and with lots of feeling, bet you got a buz doing it. Yeah the odd timing issue but overall a great job. Once this finger's sorted I'll be jumping in but for now I'm catching up on some recent recordings.

Well done.

Cheers

Well played Rossco :) The main thing I think you wanna work on here is making sure the rhythm stays super tight - try playing it along with a metronome or the original recording a bit more - there are no pauses allowed ;) but well sung and the fingerpicking is solid and you get a good tone. Well done and thx for entering! :)
