Title: Zoom H1 position for recording acoustic guitar
Post by: deadeye_ag on December 28, 2014, 03:15:18 pm
Hi all,

Well I got a Zoom H1 recorder for Xmas as an upgrade to recording on my mac (whoo hoo). I know a lot of you have this little device and wanted to leverage your experience on where to best place the device when you record your acoustic guitar. I haven't had a chance to experiment yet (Santa left me a lot of projects dealing with all the kiddos toys) so I thought I'd throw this question out there.

Thanks!

I put mine to the side under the headstock.

It will also mount on a camera tripod for easy movement and experimentation.  For a bit over $30  found a mic stand and shock mount the zoom h1 fit in and it has worked great.  It was a bit of a pain at first setting it up to be able to use the buttons easily but now I am very happy with it.

With tripod I found for louder songs a bit higher than the mouth and shaded towards the headstock.  Light fingerpicking lower the mic down around mouth level maybe a bit below.

Lots of different approaches. Placement also depends on how loud you sing and how loud you play. Like Sweed I have the tripod which is a great add-on. I tend to place the recorder about 3 feet in front of me with the microphones angled so they point in direction below the guitars soundhole.

I mount mine on a tripod and put it on a stool to the left of me. When playing acoustic Ive found this means myvocal isnt drowned out by the guitar. It makes less differencevwhen playing electric.

Thanks guys for the tips! Looking forward to getting a few recordings done before having to head back to work after the holidays.
