Title: Two mic setup, mics?
Post by: Cue Zephyr on November 12, 2009, 02:28:47 am
Alright, let me be the first one to post a topic here.
As in my other topic, the missed discount on the A-T products kind of threw me off the AT4050.
Now I'm thinking of getting two less expensive microphones instead.
Also mind that I have a preamp of only $200 (E-MU 0404 USB).
My ideas were:
SDC: SHure KSM137, Oktava MK-012,
LDC: Audio-Technica AT4040/4033, Shure KSM27.

If it were the Oktava I'd be getting it from their own website, think it might just save me some money.

Alternatively, I could put the SDC on the guitar and the LDC on my vocals.

Is there anyone else here using a pre-amp at this price point, and also has mics around the price points of the mics mentioned?
Please tell me which ones you own, or even share a recording.

StudioAuditions has samples of the Oktava and the ATs on the site. Not through an E-MU 0404, though.

Why do I get a 403 error?

I can't access it through a proxy either.

My cousin has exactly the same 403.

That's odd, Cue. Have you tried just the basic url and then tried to navigate to the jam room sessions?

Sounds like your ISP has it black listed. Send the link to your ISP and ask them to remove it.

I'm on another ISP now, still 403.

Still 403.
Asked someone else to try it for me, doesn't work there either.

Are the people you are asking in the Netherlands also?

It's possible they are blocking some countries on their end as well.

Yes, so you're probably right.

Thanks for your 'great advice', I'll probably get a Rode NT2-A and an Oktava MK-012.

Lots of people use the MK-012. There is also a mod you can do to it written by Scott Dorsey. Pretty easy to do and not many parts.

I might swap the Rode for an Oktava MK-319, cheaper.
Still waiting for further replies on Gearslutz.

Dammit, thanks a lot TB!
Why the F wasn't I able to find that..?
Sounds awesome!
I can get one (stock) for $375 local price, cheaper than a Rode NT2-A, but the drawback is that the shockmount isn't included. Oh well.

'Edit': I can get a modded 319 off their official store, should I do that?

I've never heard one but if you could get one modded for the same price as un-modded and they are true to the samples posted, it seems like a deal to me.

The modded mic sounds a lot better to me in those samples. I sure some of that is accounted for by simply removing some of that head basket material.

I can tell you also those 1G resistors are very expensive. $7 a shot.

I can also tell you the guy that originally came up with the mods for the 012 which helped lead to further insight into modding the other models knows that stuff backwards and forward and he's a no BS kind of guy.

The mod is €20 more, which results in a total price of €320 with a shockmount.
And then I still need an MK-012.
It'll add up to just over $700 (almost €500).
It doesn't seem so much of a deal now, does it? :P

I'll just order the MK-012 first and take it for a spin. Then I can break my head about getting the 'other one'.

It seems like people are gravitating towards the Michael Joly mod on that mic now. Over the older Scott Dorsey mod.

If in your searches you even find a parts list or schematic or any other information to the MJ mods, I would be very interested to see them.

CRAP... I asked about the OktavaMod through Oktava-Online contact... They are not available anymore! -_-
I think importing one wold be costly.

Well if MJ is no longer modding that mic maybe he will give up the circuit changes. That's what I want. Or do you mean teh mics are no longer available?

No, that's not the point, actually.
I contacted the Oktava Shop in Germany, they no longer sell the MJ mods. I'm pretty sure MJ still doe sthe mods, they're just unavailable here.
I don't think importing (pre-modded) or sending it (the mic I'd be getting from the Oktava shop in Germany) back and forth for modding is a good idea.
