Title: Most recent purchase - random / planned / spontaneous / other ... in 2009
Post by: rich on March 16, 2009, 12:37:12 pm
I thought this would be fun, just a place to talk about you most recent random purchase.(I don't think anyone's done this yet, have they?)

Two days ago I went to go clothing shopping for spring. I got myself a pair of purple/black tripp pants(they zip off to shorts, great for spring  ;D), a Misfits t-shirt, and a Three Days Grace t-shirt.

Also yesterday at Krogers I purchased a Monster energy drink(thought I'd treat myself ;D). They're magically delicious. :D

So what have you all purchased lately? :)

No, Graves is my real given surname (or, at least what's left of it afte rit was "americanised"), unlike singer Michale Graves (who's real name is Michael Emanuel).
You're a sad case though, don't even know the Misfits, yet wear their shirts, and yet you complain about Miley Cyrus wearing a Maiden shirt and claiming she likes them ?
 ;D ;D ;D ;D
(Sorry, that was too easy, i couldn't resist)

Sad jokes aside though, let me sum it up for ya :

Misfits (ex) bandmembers :
Singers : Glenn Danzig, Michale Graves, Myke Hideous, Eerie Von, Zollie, Jerry Only (he sucks!)
Guitarists :    Jimmy Battle, Franché Coma, Rick Riley, Bobby Steele, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Dez Cadena
Bassists : Jerry "religious nut/money hungry ****sucker" Only, Eerie Von
Drummers : Manny, Mr. Jim, Joey Image, Arthur Googy, Todd Swalla, Robo, Brian Damage, Dr. Chud, Marky Ramone

And then there's the countless rehearsals they did for all 3 incarnations of the band, which resulted in even more stage names on the list.

It tells me alot about his personal life.
If he knows it off the top of his head, he doesn't have a girlfriend, perhaps not even a job, at least not a very hard one.
If he Wiki'd it, he still has a chance with the ladies, and perhaps could get that big promotion from fry boy to cashier. :P

lol

Dan happens to be a skilled IT'er but haven't you seen his wide collection of skateboards? (the ones he has and had)
that would make him more of a geek than a nerd and geeks aren't doing so bad with the ladies these days ;)

:D hint: try not to joke about peoples job as you haven't got any either (the fact you're still in school is irrelevant as well now :) )

k on topic: random purchases:
my most recent purchase was a house; so you couldn't call it *random*.
my latest purchase that can be called random is a boss metalzone (MT2?)
it sounds pretty cool combined with some other effects so it wasn't really useless...

The MT-2's are beast. I couldn't play without mine. An excellent purchase.

I dunno if I know the difference between a geek and a nerd?(Explanation anyone?)

An IT? They work on computers right?

Lol LeivenDV you have to first have a life before you can have a personal life. I have neither, so I have nothing to loose from this conversation. :P
I kind of have a job. I mean ya know I make decent grades and stay out of trouble, doesn't that kind of count for something? ;) I just wish I could get a raise... :P

Also congrats on the home man, I'd love to see some pics. If it's not digging to much in your personal life. :P

I knew all that off the top of my head.
WE ARE THE FIEND CLUB, NOT YOU !!!  ;D

A Geek = someone who has intimate knowledge of computers, science, music, videogames, movies, Chess, Mathematics, and more such topics *any of the above, sometimes ALL of the above*
Nerd is just derogatory slang for a Geek, although more commonly used for kids in chessclubs with glasses, bad acne and worse looks.

As for my life, i've had the same cosy IT jobs in assembly dept./helpdesk/penetration testing for years now, recently started working in a guitar shop part time because IT business is SLOOOOOOW, and as for girlfriends, i have nothing to complain about   :)
Hell, probably got my first kiss before you where even born  ;D

I was at the Ohio Music Festival couple of weeks ago and bought a used Boss Micro BR DVR for about 1/2 price of what it was new. Had no real desire to own one but for the price I figured I'd go for it. It is quite easy to use and a lot of fun to play around with. Random? Maybe. Impulsive? Definitely! Regrets? None!  :)

What's the Ohio Music Festivial like?
Is it more about marketing or about musicians(sponsored or just everymna for himself?) coming out to hang out and mess around playing?

Latest random purchase : bootleg DVD of Oingo Boingo's Farewall concert...
I wish they'd re-release the damn thing already, cause i am NOT paying over $100 for a simple concert dvd, no matter how much i love Boingo (and Danny Elfman).

It is interesting that it has a wide variety of music acts; blues, rock, folk, country, metal, alternative and I think I heard a choir. I forget its actual origin but it showcases Ohio musicians, just a couple of bucks to get in, and loads of ohio vendors selling their wares. No pressure to buy, although the beer lines were very long! Its a lot of fun.

MX-2?
Ever tried Liquid-Pro?
Link (http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews.php?type=3&id=87&page=3&desc=battle_of_the_goop_-_thermal_paste_comparison)
Title: Re: Most recent purchase - random / planned / spontaneous / other ...
Post by: Dan Graves on March 26, 2009, 08:32:19 pm
Liquid pro, like arctic silver, conducts electricty.
I prefer MX-2 because it is non-conductive and non capacitive (so IF i where to accidentally spill it on a "live" component, there's no shorts), and it's non curing, non corrosive, and it doesn't "bleed" like other pastes (and liquid pro) do.
And the thermal difference between all these pastes is minimal anyway, and since i'm not an overclocker, i really couldn't care less about a 2°C temp difference.

I went to a Portugese bakery(they make the best sourdough bread) and thought while I was waiting for the salami to be sliced for me I would buy an insanely good looking apple turnover.  I was drooling at the chops for this as I don't usually buy stuff like this(willpower) but it was the most disgusting horrible thing I have eaten in a long time.  I took a big huge honkin' bite and couldn't for the life of me taste the apple inside when I looked there were probably 3 measly pieces of apple.  It was like a lump of dough in your mouth.  I threw it in the garbage.  What a disappointment!

Although vacuum forming looks like huge fun it would take up too much space and It wouldn't get enough use to justify it.

@Charlie... I had my mind set on the PS3 for YEARS since I never had the opportunity to own a PS2.. but all of my friends have a 360.. so I really got it to play online with them. Still, I don't regret getting it, being that I really wanted to own either system for the online experience mostly.

Buy a used PS2.
It's dirt cheap
A whole lot of fun
And it seems like there are compatibility problems with old PSX titles on the PS3
you can play those on the PS2.
Most games released today is xx--xx anyway.

But what happened to the PC as a gaming platform? I still prefer it.

Only consoles i've kept, maintained and used over the years is the old ones from Sega and Nintendo...
And my Atari's and Colecovision, but those see almost daily use.

My modified PS2's and Xboxes however, are mostly gathering dust.
Only thing i use my PS3 for is as a bluray player, and my Xbox 360 is a median between my pc and my TV (in other words, i use it as a media center).

Random purchase of the day : some books by "Uncle Fester" (Steve Preisler) : Silent Death *newer revision then my earlier copy*(about use of/instructions on how to make poisons, chemical and natural toxins, wargasses, nervegas, et all), Home Workshop Explosives (what could that possibly be about ? i wonder...) Secrets of Methamphetamine Manufacture (Wow man, i feel liek the f***ing energizer bunny!), Practical LSD Manufacture (woooah, far out man, heavy...), and Advanced Techniques of Clandestine Psychedelic & Amphetamine Manufacture (  :-X ).
I wonder what the folks @ the Dutch secret service will think of all these "bad books" that i'm importing, but... MEH.

@Xaromir, I agree I prefer the PC over any console as far as gaming, but sadly my computer's outdated and I can't afford to spend a $1000+ for a decent gaming computer. Hopefully in a few more years when I finally get my career sorted out, I'll get a new computer and a lot more guitar gear  :)

Actually I do Dan. There had been some minor interference coming through the amp occassionally and this cleared that up right away. And it is probably my imagination but I think my tone has improved as well, seems almost a little smoother. Can't really put my finger on it. But I am happy with it.

Another purchase I had to make this morning was my Political Science textbook which the campus bookstore said wasn't in when in fact it really was and I had to wait an hour for the building to open so I could get in and purchase it.  I also have to go buy goggles tomorrow for my Intro to Chem class.

I'll have to look up Nitrogen Triiodide.  I had chem at one point, then I chickened out and didn't want to take it in high school so now I'm taking it.  So far, I remember how to write scientific notation which is as far as we've gotten.

Or I could ask my lovely sibling what Nitrogen Triiodide is.  She's in a higher chem class than I'm in.

Can I guess?

Is it something highly flammable or explosive?

Ammonia + Iodine crystals.
It goes BOOM, and it's even more sensitive then Nitroglycerin.
Then again, you can make this stuff fine enough to be harmless for small pranks, like coating the surface of a table with it.
Then if someone puts something on it, it makes a small bang  ;D

WICKED AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to keep that in mind for future pranks.

I really should have taken chemistry in High School.  I won't learn about that stuff unless I choose to take a higher chem class.  But my guess was in the same ball park.

YOU GUYS WILL NEVER GUESS THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!

The vending machine that sold/sells the goggles that I need for chem class was broken so I had to go to the college book store and pay $9.95 but if you added tax to that it came out $10.90.  The goggles cost only $10.00 at the machine if was working.  I'm just really frustrated that I had to spend almost and extra dollar on goggles that I'm only probably going to use once in my life.

If you only use them once, you're doing it wrong.
Good practice during any chem test = gloves, protective eyewear, and a means to extinguish a chemical fire and treat chemical burns nearby.

Once as in just for this quarter.  Not once during the whole quarter.  If it was, then yeah it was a total waste of $10.90 that I could have saved.

We bought one of my sons a laptop for Xmas and he just started college but can't use the laptop that we bought him.  College politics!  My hubby and I were furious.  What can you do though?  We had to rent one for him for the year.  NOT happy!

Ask your son if the the College has Wi Fi that he has to go register for.  That's how my college works.  You can bring your own laptop but you have to have it registered by the College in order to use the Wi Fi.  I haven't registered my computer because I spend more time practicing between classes than doing homework.  And my homework so far is to just read chapters.  No big assignments yet.

How's your hand doing by the way?  Maybe should have left it for a PM.

That's not hacking.
And i wish people (in general!) would stop referring to all scriptkiddies who know how to use cracking software as hackers.
It's just plain wrong.

As for cracking W-lan, any idiot with a pulse and enough reading skills to read a simple manual can be taught how to do that.
Only problem is it can take a while depending on the key length, key strength (how complicated the keyphrase is) and what kind of encryption was used.
For example, any idiot using WEP is just asking for their connection to be hijacked.

Almost forgot my latest purchases : an electric shaver from philips, some extra RAM from G.Skill, a box (12 sets) of powerslinkies, 2 trays of cheapo energy drink (the stuff from Lidl, which tastes a million times better then red bull, and costs a 5th of the price of red bull per can  ;D ), a box of shrimp noodles (20 packs), and some magic mushrooms  :D
All that for under €170, which means i even have enough cash left to buy me another season of Tales From the Crypt on DVD...
Hooray for smart shopping  ;D

amen :p

btw; the most efficient method of hacking to me is still "social engineering"
it doesn't take much of ICT skills but you need some in order to fake that you are a system engineer.

"Hello dear sir; this is ... from the ... service desk; there's a mixup in security settings due to a bad server synchronisation. this was cause by the ... when the .... and the ... were ...  We need your credentials in order to secure your private files to be exposed. "

when they start askig difficult question or more technical questions, you must be able to improvise with some ICT background knowledge (I still am an ICT'er you know; but that's just acting.. and for peopel like me, acting is easier than configuring systems :)

now on topic:
random purchase...
pasta: pene carbonara witrh extra cheese .. because I FELT like it :p
... ah ok   a small €10K for house renovation,s: central heating and electricity stuff. :p not so very random though

Agreed, nothing is easier than just plain old asking for passwords, and making sure you can throw some names, company specifics terms and some tech lingo around to sound like the real deal.
Kevin Mitnick wrote an excellent book about social engineering called "The Art of Deception".
Must read if you are into psychology or the IT field.

So basically get a computer book, or manual, and learn about the system you are trying to hack into................Hehehehehehehehe............

Random purchase was about three cans of Mountain Dew during the course of the day from the campus vending machine's and a chewy sort of gummy kind of snack whose name and brand just left my brain.

So basically get a computer book, or manual, and learn about the system you are trying to hack into................Hehehehehehehehe............

Nice try, but wrong.
That mindset would get you nothing but ridicule amongst serious IT folk.
The idea is to learn the ins and outs of software and hardware, and find ways to improve it, or make it do what you want, rather then just what it's developers had in mind.
That is what "hacking" stood for, in a way : "hacking" away at a keyboard until the machine was doing what you wanted.
There's also the hardware to take into account, the "hacker" spirit as it was viewed traditionally is akin to the kind of thing you see in modern day "overclockers", people who make hardware run beyond it's specificated clockspeeds, voltages etc., or getting "more bang for your buck" from what can be considered "lesser" equipment.
This is all an oversimplification on it's own, as it's really hard to define in a few words.

A good overview of the era in which all these terms first showed up, and which led to the online world as we know it today, is seen in BBS : The Documentary by Jason Scott.
You can watch all of it online, LEGALLY !! as the entire documentary was released under the creative commons license, just check google video.
Hell, i just bought the DVD's, but what can i say, i'm a geek  ;D

I actually used to associate with a real hacker. I didn't know it for a long time. It was kind of funny when I was finally told where all the knowledge was coming from. He could do it all though. I mean everything, radio, satellite, computers, telephone. He knew how it all worked and could crack, modify and build it to his desire. He has patents for things we take for granted.

Kinda strange to think back to those days now. Really nice guy and a fantastic teacher.

.... let's see.. random purchase... red Locktite

Dan, red Locktite is a for a more permanent lock, but actually now that I look closer it's actually green Loctite.

#640 for locking pins, studs, press fit items. Helps restore tolerances, etc.

It used to be Loctite came in little bottle the color to match the product. But now it seems they like to use red bottles for everything.

I was in one of those discount warehouses that get rotating surplus stock. and saw it for $1. Which turns out to be about 1/3 the regular price.

But generally we used to just get two kinds Red or Blue. Blue if you needed to stay but later needed to take it apart. Red if you just wanted it to stay put.

They have so many different types now it's all done by numbers.
Here are the thread lockers though.
http://www.loctiteproducts.com/products/subcategory.asp?CatID=10&SubID=48

and this is what I ended up with...
https://tds.us.henkel.com//NA/UT/HNAUTTDS.nsf/web/062262D5231164B0882571870000D85C/$File/640-EN.pdf

Which is something out of their industrial line.

Title: Re: Most recent purchase - random / planned / spontaneous / other ...
Post by: Dan Graves on September 30, 2009, 06:15:54 pm
Here we just get some blueish-white goo in a jar with a small brush or a small bottle, that's used to lock threads permanently, and there's a secondary product (just a typical solvent, probably acetone based) to unlock any bonds made with it.
Title: Re: Most recent purchase - random / planned / spontaneous / other ...
Post by: TB-AV on September 30, 2009, 06:49:06 pm
Never heard of anything like that. That sounds like something you might want to build a permanent fixture with.

Blue Loctite is used for instance on a water pump or brake calipers. Or even guitar amps and such. You want the bolts to stay put but also want to release them periodically with a wrench.

Anywhere vibration exists and field service is likely needed.

I think i know that ducky, i believe they are named "i rub my duckie",
i think they became quite popular due to their innocent look.
But there are actually better toys,
patchy paul aka paulchen was a huge hit here in germany.
It's a green worm, done by "fun factory", i used to work for them for a short period of time.
Even if the founders are guys, it's actually done more like by women for women,
they don't watch their workers and allow their workers to "steal" them for personal use at home,
without having to ask or somethings like that,
they have a suggestion box specially for their products in the factory.
They are expansive, but are very well done and made in germany, but i think they are also in the US now.
All my girlfriends received one as a present for when i'm not around and they loved them.
They also do some stuff for dudes and couples. :D

Unlike my fellow Americans (and Dutchies), i don't live by the silly notion that i should be careful not to offend anyone by saying what i'm thinking.

I was uptight because I didn't see the point in the joke (if it was one) and exactly how serious you were about it.  Normally I tend to figure out how serious you are about some things its just that this one I really didn't get.

And Xaromir e-mailed me the dress you commented on.  It's very beautiful, however I don't want to wear it.

Actually, he was on about the dress, i said nothing about it, because i've seen weirder items used to make clothing... liked duct tape.

Mind you, this whole thing wasn't "a joke", i just thought it was a funny suggestion.
And not at all serious.
Hence the smileys.
Only serious part was that i would say things like this IRL, because i do.

A honestly well meant suggestion : take everything i say outside of the equipment forum with a pinch of salt (or a whole 2 pound bag if you feel the need for it  ;D ), if i'm being serious, i'll (over)state it.
Mmmm'kay ?  ;)

Yeah, she switched our 2 posts around i guess.
That's the dress btw:

I thought that she got a bit upset about the whole thing so i wrote her,
not to take it to serious. ;)

I found out that there are more dresses made from those,
while googling the dress again.

I do think that people should carry around condoms, because that's what leads to so many pregnancies and spreading of STD's, Because it's going to ruin the moment to run down to the drugstore and buy some.

Not implying that Sl8sh is that kind of girl, or that it's anyone's business if she is, but that's my own 2 cents.

But wait, there is more.
How bout hair-bands made from USED condoms from china?
Here they are on snopes:

On deadline writes they cost around 3cent for 10.

I somehow prefer to use them as intended.

Impulsive, random-ish purchase: New set of cycling bib tights, mini pump and long sleeved base layer. Winter's coming and I thought, WTF?

Liar, your latest random purchase is a Visualsound Jekyl & Hyde pedal.
It's just not there yet  ;D

@ PJMCM : The question rises though, who would dare to buy any "yoghurt" based sallad dressing there ?  8)

@ Sl8sh : Sorry my dear, it seems the subject does not want to be dropped quite yet.
But feel free to talk about other things while we go on about it in a semi serious fashion  ;D

Latest purchase is a pack of condoms, some razorblades and 4 bottles of deodorant (and i have a receipt for the condoms too, just in case anyone thinks i'm just saying that to keep the conversation on the subject...  :D )

That's okay.  My friends give me tough time too when they find something funny and I don't.  But we always work it out.  And then they don't let the subject die either when they have a need to say something.

Random purchase will be (cause I haven't bought it yet) some blank CD's to put songs on it that I want to learn.  Hopefully before I see my teacher on Friday so I can start learning them.

@ Xaro : agreed, no bull**** here, just does what it says on the can, and smells ok.

@ Sl8sh : He's talking about those silly AxE commercials where, if you spray yourself with AxE, every woman that passes you by starts agressively flirting with you, and won't give up, even if it means chasing you down.

I didn't planed to start a discussion about being chased by women. :D
But just for those that don't know what we where talking about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9tWZB7OUSU

Some of their commercials i find a bit offensive to be honest,
some are just stupid, but sad thing is it's breeding another generation of sprayers,
you know... those people that make you leave the elevator and take the stairs,
those people that leave a 5mile long trace of nasal noise and terror behind everywhere they walk.

There also was a axe commercial with john lee hookers boom boom as a soundtrack,
which i found a bit disgraceful, but at least it's not as dumb as their other commercials.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbU_j0bxWpU

I actually bought stuff today.
A power supply for dans pedal which hopefully will arrive tomorrow,
and a lot of picks (white js picks, 2 sharkfins and a teckpick)

Well, we'll see.  The guy who e-mailed me from the repair shop said he'd look for one that would fit.  It doesn't sound like it's going to be easy to find something that fits with a 1983 guitar.  But I will have fun with it once I get it installed.

Xaromir:

Cool jigsaw puzzles.  I love the one with the cats and the guitar.  Oh, I saw a jigsaw puzzle that was supposed to be one of Esher's pieces of art, you know the ones that defy logic like the one where water goes down a spout but then goes back up and around to go down the spout?  Um......like this:

Stopped ?
He's been dead since '72, and he worked until his death, he lived in a retirement home for artists where he had his own studio.
One of the few pluspoints of living in this otherwise horrid country : they know everything there is to know about old Maurits Cornelis Escher.

Sl8sh-

He's right you know....... They have a traffic lane for just about anything and everything in Holland.

You have to cross fourteen different lanes just to get to the other side of a bloody alleyway and you know what?......... The Crazy Dutch B***ardsTM never tell you where the lanes are.

For an entire week after I got home from my first trip to Amsterdam, every time I heard a bicycle bell I instinctively flattened myself against the nearest wall in terror  :o

I kid a little, of course, but it takes a bit of getting used to. Traffic there is mental. Saying that, we made the mistake the first trip out of going by coach. We had to spend fourteen hours listening to some gobbo whining that our gang at the back had been, as they say, "Smokin' dat xx--xx up, large portion" all the way from Liverpool to the parking lot opposite the Botel, pausing only to pop the windows and vents open, collect ourselves and crank up our best 'Wot, me boss?' faces for the benefit of HM Customs at Dover. Not that they gave a toss, of course; it's when you're coming back home that you have their undivided attention ;)

Anyway..... Said Gobbo, steps off the coach, spitting feathers and glaring at us............. walks ten feet, slips on a tram rail and breaks his ankle. They nearly had to call a fleet of ambulances........... one for him and the rest for the gang of Scouse stoners who were in absolute fits of laughter at the sight of so much irony concentrated in one place.

The driver had to tell us to..... and I quote..... ' F*** off'.... While he dealt with the basket case, 'cos he couldn't handle it if one of us fell in the canal laughing as well as the whingeing dickhead busting his foot  ;D

Yeah, holland is fun,
but i have to say that i'm still a bit mad because of the invention of the speed camera.
Reminds me, i still have to overthrow my government,
they want speed-limits everywhere now...
It's like blowing up the reichstag or the neuschwanstein castle - we are famous for that,
the lack of a speed limit on certain roads is some sort of a national monument... :-X

The dutch have sidewalks, lanes for bicyclists, and then there are designated lanes for city busses...
But you can assume that anywhere where there's pedestrians, there will be folks on bikes, skateboards, rollerblades, mopeds/scooters.
Folks on bikes always think they own the place, so indeed, either dive for cover if you hear a bell, or brace for impact.
I usually just jump off my skateboard and make sure the mad bike racing f**khead in question hits it and gets a free flying lesson.
After which i usually remark how they should slow the f**k down in pedestrian areas.

Anyway, new random purchase is a new topnut...  Tusq this time.
Accidentally dropped the old one out when changing strings, so it's now in 2 pieces.
Asked our luthier to fit the new one for me, it'll be done once i get off here.

never seen anything like that...

is that tuned like the regular 6 string guitar but all an octavel ower liek a classic bass?

what kind of wicked fingers /string control you need to play that? :p
Title: Re: Most recent purchase - random / planned / spontaneous / other ...
Post by: Dan Graves on October 19, 2009, 11:30:46 am
It's tuned the same method as a 12 string regular : normal string, then an octave higher.
So tuned like a normal bass, and then each string doubled an octave higher.
Example : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr6zBfVdXEs
(Pearl Jam FTW!!)

I've just bougth online a very cheap LAG Jet JV100 for €100. I'll receive itlater this week. My idea is to use this as test subject in order to learn how to set-up a guitar, check the wirings, the pick-ups, change parts, mods, etc, etc.
Let's see how it ends.

Here is the link:

Just ordered a replacement neck for my EC Strat. 24 3/4 scale conversion neck, birdseye maple with rosewood board, 10-16" compound radius, stainless steel med frets, thin contour.

The original neck has always been too large for my small hands.

A music stand from the cheapo Lidl supermarket....... Which turns out to be very robust and well worth the tenner I paid for it.

Beats the crap out of propping my tabs up between my keyboard and monitor, which I've been doing since I bust my last music stand.

If you're printing tabs (or notation or lyrics, for that matter) to read and play from, a music stand takes away all the headache. I can highly recommend these Lidl ones.

Xaro......No mate..... Liverpool in England.

I think just about every Euro supermarket chain has a foothold in Britain now. A good example is the German market chain Aldi. Every Sunday and Thursday, Aldi has a 'Special Buy' offer. There's a little pamphlet in the stores and a webpage as to what goods will be on offer, on each of those days; all in advance so you know when they'll be in stock. I've bought everything from electrical equipment to cycle clothing from them, at rock bottom prices and at a level of quality that makes them a dead cert bargain. Their bargains may not be name brand, but you get your moneys worth and more, certainly.

In Liverpool, Aldi is the more pronounced store, but Lidl is getting there as they've now opened a store in North Liverpool where I live. They seem to be doing the same as Aldi and putting out 'Special Offer' magazines. This month, they're selling electric and acoustic guitars with attendant accessories such as guitar stands, drummers stools and music stands. I wouldn't touch the guitars, but the stands and such are very robust and very good value for money.

I grabbed one 'cos, as I said, I'm fed up cramped up in the same position 'cos I have my tabs propped up between my KB and monitor. I can't complain about this stand; I know I said it was 'robust' but, I xx--xx you not, you could mount a .50 calibre Browning on this sucker.

Dunno if Aldi (or Lidl) do the same in Germany, but it's always worth keeping an eye on the Sunday and Thursday specials.

Edit: LOL...... Just checked the local Lidl special offers online and noticed they're selling a 'Grow your own mushrooms' kit.

I can sense that one's going to be popular :)

I recently heard that LIDL made some kind of deal with VW. So You can now buy a new car, quite a bit cheaper, at LIDL stores in Germany.

I don't know about the vw thing, but i also don't read the commercials,
but the aldi-pc's are legendary, back then when i was younger they got sold out in a 1 or 2 hours in some stores.
My first windows-pc was from aldi. :)

But you have to be a bit careful, they also sell huge piles of rubbish sometimes.
My mother once bought herself a home-trainer, one of those bicycle things and the pedals always got loose,
and i hurt myself multiple times putting that thing together.

The Lidl gear isn't bad, is it mate?............ I was tempted to get a couple more stands, but decided that having two at a time out was enough. Got one for my nephew though and he loves it. Grab a music stand while you can, if you haven't got one already; they're absolutely solid for a tenner.

I don't really like those, i always have the feeling that i have to place them in the middle of the room.
I think i will buy one of those:
http://www.thomann.de/gb/rockstand_rs20870.htm
I should be able to get at least 5 in there,
as long as i don't buy exclusively acoustics in the next years.

That pen is a good idea, i never knew that such a thing existed,
but i developed my own methods.
If the sticker is sill intact it is possible to heat it up with a hairdryer,
but you have to watch the heat a bit, so you don't melt the stuff the sticker is attached to,
like jewelcases or in this case the pickguard.

Any other gamers out there? got Call of duty modern warfare 2 for xbox360 yesterday , still have'nt played it.
How could you?
This thing is 10€ more expansive than any other full-price game for no reason at all,
and according to the tests it isn't even that good,
in addition to that the customer doesn't get anything more, but even less,
since it needs steam on the pc.
For 10€ more you could buy justins album (LE) or the normal version twice.
Buying that thing will make games more expansive because they will continue making them more expansive,
if it's successful.
Don't get me wrong, i think everyone should be rewarded for good work and fair treatment of customers,
so i do buy games, but this is one i would never buy in my life.

Otherwise I just wait and get it second hand.

Crimes rock! ;D
Hmn, bad one, even for my standards - which are very low.

I really used to like their stuff back then, but a bit to much like dragonforce.
Do you know deadlock? A guy named Tom Wylde recommended them to me once.
Wiki calls them melodic death, but it doesn't really fit.
They do some really nice stuff.
Their girl got a really good voice, a little bit thin here and there maybe but really good in general,
can get sort of heavy, but always really nice sounding, never to cluttered.
I like them, except for the fact that they are straight edge.
Check them out anyway.
http://www.xdeadlockx.com/

Damian:
God you are lucky, you can not find that thing for under 55 here,
but mostly it's 59. :(
Maybe the X-Box version doesn't have those ripoff pricing.
But still, i don't really like what they are doing right now. :/
But have fun with the game. :)

No, I don't know deadlock yet. but I will check them out!

They don't praise war and crime but complain about the whole world, how bad and cruel it is.
One song, "the oswald file" is 18min and 10sec long and deals with... mhhh, guess!  ;)

Edit: Ok, I checked them out and don't like it. The "singer" just doesn't sing but scream something ? in the mic. I just don't like this type of metal.
I'm more into melodic singing, so I can understand the lyrics. :)

EDIT again: Bought a pack of smorebrod today. I never tried it before but it tastes quite good. :)

Complaining - one of the great german traditions and pushed to new extremes every season.
I don't really have a problem with promoting "wrong" things in music, i'm not THAT normal,
as long as they stay on the record it's cool with me, i need that sometimes "to calm down". :)

I got my copy of MW2 for £36 (RRP £55), and I heard it was £30 at another shop. Although the RRP is higher than normal most companies are selling it at the standard price for a new game and making less of a profit.

And despite all the hate going round for it atm, I like it :)

I got a tuner/metronome in Aldi , 12.99 euro ,Has an earphone and a clip on for acoustics. Its the c.giant brand, never heard of it before.
Decided to take a chance , and it seems to have worked out fine. They also had electric guitar starter kits with the same brand, they're
probably pants though ;)

Got my Göldo Asnut, Dunlop 212 and Kyser Short-Cut Capo today!!!
The Asnut is awesome, works just fine on my guitar, the 212 is just right for my fingers and the Short-Cut is off the wall!
I'll be having a lot of fun with this, heh.

Also got my 'just-in-case' Dampit.

Can't wait to get this cute little thing. :-*
Not that i don't have enough to do with my guitar, but sometimes,
i just want to do something different. ;)

My grandpa played a hohner chromatic harmonica, i think my grandma maybe still got it.

There isn't anyone in the family playing it though.
Sick prices on those chromatic ones, by the way.

The price for chromatics seem to be ok actually.
Hohner chromatic harmonicas start at 55€ @thomann, which could be way worst.
But yes, they are a bit more expansive than the diatonics.
Hope this one is any good, that kudzuRunner dude recommends the marine band,
but somehow i'm not really comfortable with the thought of wood sucking in and storing a whole lot of spit,
i rather clean it out every week or so.
The one i got is "only" the "normal" version, there is a chrome one with crystal glass,
and it costs 250€. xD
http://stuff.sonybmg.de/Image/Michael_Hirte/Anniv_chrome_box_opened_p.jpg
If i would have the money i would buy it just for the box. <3

We also don't have anyone in the family that plays, or at least not anymore / not yet.
It's a bit strange, we are a family close to the arts but only 1 musician (guitar/drums),
(i don't count i'm not good at all) but we got a whole lot of painters and some sculptors.
I really have to work on my playing. :(

JC:
Your is 2 things more expansive.
I know it's not the same currency, but still, the number is bigger. :D

I have never thought about it but I'd really like to try a harmonica.

If you decide to do that, try that guy:

But i also got a book since his page isn't really as good as justins,
and his lessons seem to be more like individual lessons, not like series like justins beginner section.
If you want i can post some of my learning-experience in my road case.

Just made a (hopefully) big Deal on Ebay. Bought myself a
"Brand New Epiphone LP Standard Gold Top" for about 250 €. In shops round here, they are sold at about 500 €.

I'm curious to see, what it really is as it arrives. Fortunately I have a 14 Day Money Back Guarantee. So if it is crappy, I'll send it right back to the Island it comes from...;)
If it's not crap, I'll have myself a very early christmas...;D

Nice mic Cue. That would be a waste of money with my voice.

I just picked up a 1960's Japanese build guitar for $79.00 off of ebay. The seller got it at an estate sale and doesn't know anything about guitars and it has no name on it. I'm guessing by the photo that it's a Teisco or one of the variants, probably from the late 60's. I'll post pictures when it comes.

I hope to get the mic asap, but maybe my budget at this point will make me have to wait a bit.
It should work on guitars as well as on voice, I'll probably be using it for both. :d

She's here! Arrived an hour ago and she's absoluteley fine. (For me, at least.)

Brand New indeed but, as I assumed, some kind of B-Stock, as there are two enclosuers in the Gold Top, that I think schould not be there. But they are only seen, if you take a very very close look.
The pickguard is a bit edgy on one corner, but that is nothing that could not be fixed with a sharp blade and there are some scratches (very small ones indeed in the chrome finish of the bridge. But for the money I paid, it (right now) seems like a bargain more than ever. There's nothing, that would bother me except the setup. That needs to be done completely... at least it seems like that to me. Anybody ever done a LP Setup? Could definiteley need some good advice with that, as I've never done it before.

I'll post some pics soon, to show you what I'm talking about.

http://www.gibson.com/backstage/index002.htm

Click on 'Setup Tips' in the left hand menu. It's not entirely exhaustive, but it gives you the factory standard setup specs for a Les Paul. Start from there and then work your way toward what's best for you.

Before you start, though, do a quick check to make sure your frets are all on the level.

I love sarcasm.
It should be hidden a bit better.
As it is, it's draws a bit too much attention.
This can be fixed by using a different pick, but as i see it,
the point of the product also is that it works with almost every standard-sized pick.
Depending on the springs this part would also be worth over-thinking.
I could come up with something.

I have lots of ideas, if you have the money you have a new partner. :)
Oh, sorry, yeah, forgot about the sarcasm thing.

No sarcasm, you left it bouncing there and left without saying what could be improved.

Well I just lucked upon a really good deal on a fantastic acoustic on Saturday.
I was in just to buy a some strings for my Guild and decided to check
out the guitars.I went into the high end  acoustic room and sitting there
was a used Yairi Masterworks DYM 95 for $1150 CDN($1075 USD)
I almost bought this exact guitar about a year ago but it was a little out of my budget
back then. The sales guy, who I've gotten to know over the years, explained
that someone bought it shortly after I bought my Guild DV6 and just recently returned it and bought a Martin instead.
I think they normally retail for about  $2100-2300 CDN.
So I played it for about a half an hour(loved the neck and action and sound and .... ;D)
and checked it for any flaws or major problems. I found none except for really dirty  strings. So I put a deposit on it and rushed home and got my Guild for a trade in while they put some new strings on it.
I don't have any pictures yet but here's a link to it product page.

Also here's some youtube links to the Yairi factory tour in case anyone is not familiar
with them.

Good luck to your mother in law!

About books:
That Somogyi guy also wrote 2 books about building guitars,
both are around 300 pages thick as far as i remember, and cost 140$ each.
Something else:
http://www.forbes.com/2007/01/16/most-expensive-books-tech-media-cx_ee_books06_0116expensivebooks_slide_2.html

I bought a bottle of ouzo, i love that stuff.
For my ndaggt recipient i bought small wooden chest,
a pendant made from a purdy stone
a beanie babie, (i used to love them when i was little)
http://www.ty.com/BeanieBabies_home
2 little bags of [secret],
a postcard book of nuremberg,
a 51 piece jigsaw-puzzle,
and 2 prints of pictures i've made.

I thought i better keep some details "secret", in case that my recipient reads here,
he doesn't know that it's him who will receive it.
Don't want to ruin it for the dude.
Except for the ouzo i got all that for not even 12€, that's cool eh? :)
(You only can (roughly) spend what 2 bigmac menus cost)
No b-stock or stuff. I'm a bit proud of what i achieved.
I post a picture when it arrived.

I bought them at Thomann.de.

zkash: yes, 30 strings. I wanted to try the SITs and DR strings out.
Ernie Balls are my standart strings.
My wife started playing guitar last month!  ;D Hopefully she develops a good GAS!  :D
I like these picks more then my old Tortex picks. They are good for fast stuff.

I have picks and I don't know which. I took a pick from the local musicstore last Friday, forgot to pay for it after having spent €70 on other stuff (I don't think they care).
Elixirs still cost 14,90 at Thomann.... T___T
I think I'm gonna try DRs too.
I'm a bit afraid of trying new strings though, I love the tone of my guitar with the 013-056 Phosphor-Bronze w/ coating...
Title: Re: Most recent purchase - random / planned / spontaneous / other ...
Post by: MadCat on December 02, 2009, 07:57:48 pm
You use coated strings, don't you?

I tried them once but didn't liked them. I think the price is ok as long as they last at least twice as long as other strings and feel good to you.

The ernies cost 8,50 at my local dealer!
The funny thing is, that he sells a single string for only one Euro.  ???
Title: Re: Most recent purchase - random / planned / spontaneous / other ...
Post by: Cue Zephyr on December 02, 2009, 08:12:14 pm
That's hilarious. XD

Yeah I used coated strings, these are the very same strings the guitar came out of the factory with if they haven't changed them in the shop it lived in for about a year. They don't lose their clarity and they don't rip the skin off of my fingers. :P
Title: Re: Most recent purchase - random / planned / spontaneous / other ...
Post by: MadCat on December 02, 2009, 09:05:46 pm
So you didn't changed the strings since you play guitar?
I have to change them at least once a month! Owning two guitars that gets quite expensive!
Title: Re: Most recent purchase - random / planned / spontaneous / other ...
Post by: Cue Zephyr on December 02, 2009, 09:53:33 pm
I've had her for over three months now, and she's 1.5 years old now (that's what her serial tells me). The strings don't change colour, they don't sound dead; they keep their presence, they feel like normal strings (they still tend to cause the screechy sound when sliding over wound strings). I don't think they need a change. Or am I missing the point here?!
Title: Re: Most recent purchase - random / planned / spontaneous / other ...
Post by: Linsen on December 02, 2009, 10:32:35 pm
I don't think so. If they still sound good to you and play good, they are good, I'd say. I am pretty sure that you'd hear quite a difference at first when you put new strings on, however. But that doesn't necessarily mean that you'll like the sound more. Also, I would assume that the strings are not as old as the guitar. They might just be only a little over 3 months old, which is not that old for coated strings, I think.
Title: Re: Most recent purchase - random / planned / spontaneous / other ...
Post by: Cue Zephyr on December 02, 2009, 10:41:51 pm
I think this still is the factory set, because Taylor Guitars puts Elixirs with Nanoweb coating on every guitar they make, and I'm pretty sure I'm playing on these now (or maybe not, I can't tell actually).
Title: Re: Most recent purchase - random / planned / spontaneous / other ...
Post by: Linsen on December 02, 2009, 10:57:56 pm
I wish I'd knew more about how strings age. It may be that they don't really degenerate much when they're not played much, which could explain why 1.5 year old strings still sound good. It could also be that the shop re-stringed your guitar within those 1.5 years and used the strings Taylor recommends. It may even be that the shop got that guitar not long before you bought it.

Here's how it went with my guitar: I bought it 2 months ago, just a day or two after the store got it from the wholesaler where they ordered it on my request. Before the wholesaler send it out, they put new strings on it (or maybe stringed it up for the first time). But the serial number on my guitar indicates that it was the 27th guitar built in May 2007.

Mad:
Sorry to hear that. :/
Watch where you sit down next time... ;)

Cue:
I've also tried some coated ones, didn't really liked them, they sounded strange,
and i didn't had enough "grip".
A exception are actually the DR's which i liked.

How quick stings wear out depends on the person, the sting and how often the guitar is played,
if you feel they are still good after 2 month then you keep them on for 2 month.
But you should experiment a bit, you don't hear or feel it instantly, it's a slow process.
Go out there and try some new strings every now and then when you got a little bit of money left over.
But it makes it so much nicer to try something new every now and then. :)
